Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Shampoo Review

IMBB Sponsored Product Review

Hey everyone!

I am back with my IMBB sponsored product review for this month. This month has been really hectic and pretty bad lately.  After I returned to college from the holidays, I got so many assignments and everything was chaos. Also, one of my presentations went pretty badly, so I was kinda depressed, but since I had been using this product since the last two weeks, I figured I should do the review soon. Anyway, I will get to the review quickly. Also, I would like to thank IMBB once again for providing this amazing opportunity, and making me feel like a part of it 🙂

Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Shampoo 3

Price:

I got it online for Rs. 2319, for a 300 ml bottle, which makes it expensive, but you can get it online for about $15 in the US.

Ingredients:

I have posted the picture, and you would notice that it contains both Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate.

Packaging:

It is a plastic bottle with a flip open cap. It reminds me a lot of The Body Shop shower gel packaging, and I compared, and the only difference is in size and the cap design. The dark green bottle is opaque and you cannot see how much product is left. I will mention that during shipping, some shampoo leaked out because the cap got partially unscrewed on its own, so it is not particularly travel-friendly.

My Take on Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Shampoo:

Finally, coming to the product itself. I have been using it for the past two weeks, and have used it maybe four times. Firstly, I will mention the smell. It smells strongly of peppermint. It overpowers all the other scents, but it’s still great (I love peppermint!).  When you apply it onto your hair, it doesn’t lather much. Because of this, I thought it was SLS free, but it’s not, so I don’t know why that is. You need to work it quite a bit with some water to get it to lather.

Now, the main part – this feels amazing on your scalp! When you apply it and leave it on your hair, it starts to tingle after a minute, and then it starts to tingle really strongly. You know that feeling you get in your mouth when you have a mint? Yeah, now imagine that on your scalp! In fact, it is quite strong, and if kept for more than 2-3 minutes, your eyes start burning a bit, as if you have applied Zandu balm on your head! The feeling goes away after it is washed off. Speaking of washing off, you get a blast of coolness on your scalp when you wash it off – think how you feel when you drink water right after having a mint. Now, transfer this feeling to your hair. In fact, for the pictures, when I put that tiny amount on my hand, even my hand started tingling! Invigorating is actually the word I will use to describe the feeling I get when I shampoo using this.

The texture of the shampoo is not too thick but not runny either; it’s on the thicker side though. It is light green in color.

Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Shampoo 6

I opted for this shampoo because I have a really oily scalp. I have tried to capture the “horrible-ness” of my hair when it goes for 3 days without a shampoo in the pictures. So, I thought this would be the best option for me, since it has tea tree oil. First time I used it, it made my hair really soft and nice and tangle free, but this time when I used it, my hair felt a bit drier than usual. It leaves my scalp squeaky clean, maybe a bit too clean. I don’t think this shampoo should be used very often, since it is drying. I will alternate it with a more moisturizing shampoo.

Now, I would mention one of the great things about this shampoo. I have a bit of dandruff and that causes hair fall, and I think this shampoo has helped a lot in reducing dandruff, and since I started using it, I have been noticing a lot less hair fall than usual, so I am amazed. I wasn’t expecting it to, and so it felt good.

You can see how the shampoo looks on me.

This is before shampoo. My hair is horrible and oily.

Triya

This is after shampoo. I have not used any kind of conditioner, hair products or blow dryer or straightener.

Triya hair

Sorry for appearing narcissistic, but I was having kind of a goof face day, so I clicked a lot of photos! 😛

On a slightly different note, the lipstick I am wearing here is my latest find, and I’m loving it so much, I wanted to share it with you all – its MAC Chili. I know it’s reviewed, but I wanted to popularize it because it really doesn’t get the love it deserves – it’s like one of MAC’s best-kept secrets. Go and try this one out, everyone!

Pros of Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Shampoo:

  • Amazing smell and feel of peppermint.
  • Invigorates you at the start of the day.
  • Contains tea tree oil, which is helpful for acne and dandruff.
  • Actually lives up to its claims, and also reduces dandruff.
  • Cleans the scalp thoroughly.
  • Very unique and interesting tingling sensation on scalp.
  • Reduces hair fall by cleaning scalp up.
  • Performs nicely enough without conditioner.

Cons of Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Shampoo:

  • Packaging could be better, more travel friendly.
  • Doesn’t lather much.
  • Contains SLS.
  • Could be pretty strong for someone who doesn’t like the tingling sensation.
  • Dries out hair too much if used regularly.
  • Expensive in India.

IMBB Rating:

I would give this 4.2/5

I loved the shampoo but it’s way out of my budget right now, so I wouldn’t be able to repurchase. Also, since I wouldn’t use it regularly, this bottle will last me a long time. I would definitely recommend it to people with oily hair, or who get acne on forehead, or have dandruff. Dry hair people can skip this.

See you all next time!

  2. Nice Review Triya and lovely pics…. love you hair, so silky *haan ji*
As you said that this shampoo dries out in long run I guess then it won’t be the best pick for my dry curly hair… what so you feel?

    1. *thankyou* Sweta for your lovely compliments!

I don’t think it would be very suitable for dry hair but I think if you want, you can alternate it with other shampoos as I’m doing. It improves scalp quality immensely!
