Permanent Laser Hair Removal Treatment and My Personal Experience

Permanent Laser Hair Removal Treatment

There is a lot of mystery and doubts surrounding laser hair removal treatment and today in this post, I would make an effort to clear apprehensions and doubts that people have regarding laser hair removal treatment.  I have personally undergone the treatment and I find that it is the best way to get rid of facial hair permanently.  Please read through to find out about the process through my perspective.

Permanent Laser Hair Removal Treatment and My Personal Experience

What is Laser Hair Removal Treatment?
Laser hair removal is a non-invasive procedure for a permanent reduction of facial and body hair. This procedure does not require any anaesthesia. The laser will effectively treat all hair types and complexion ranges including tanned and fair skin. The laser is so precise in targeting hair, that you can have hair removed from all parts of the body with minimal discomfort and treatment time.

Types of Lasers Used (info from wikipedia):

  • Argon: 488 nm (Turquoise/Cyan) or 514.5 nm (Cyan) (no longer used for hair removal).
  • Ruby laser: 694.3 nm (Deep Red) (no longer used for hair removal; only safe for patients with very pale skin) [10].
  • Pulsed diode array: 810 nm (Near-Infrared) (for pale to medium type skin).
  • Nd:YAG laser: 1064 nm (Near-Infrared) (made for treating darker skin types, though effective on all skin types).

Laser Treatment versus Electrolysis:

Electrolysis hair removal method involves a process where through a needle-shaped electrode electricity is passed into each hair follicle wherein the growth of the hair from its root is destroyed, so that the hair no longer grows from that particular follicle anymore.  Multiple sessions are required in electrolysis process, almost double and triple the sessions that is required for laser hair treatment.  Electrolysis scores over laser treatment in the aspect that the hair removal is almost permanent because the hair follicles are targeted and destroyed.  In laser therapy, the dark hair pigment is targeted and that’s why people with light hair growth wouldn’t find it very beneficial.  Laser therapy is almost painless whereas electrolysis process does involve some stinging and pricking sensations and people with low pain thresholds will find it a very painful process. Electrolysis also can leave scars behind.

My Experience with Permanent Laser Hair Removal Treatment:

If you have been following my posts, you would have realized that my skin reacts very badly to bleaching.  I use the bleaching method for my facial  hair and almost every time that I use a bleach, my skin gets these ugly patches and rashes as a reaction to the bleach.  To get rid of these patches, I had to follow up with fairness creams and skin lightening creams available in the market, but even that would take a lot of time and by that time, I would be ready for my next bleaching session.  The only bleach that somewhat agreed with my skin was Oxybleach, but that too gave me rashes and patches sometime.  This was a vicious cycle and I wanted to put an end to it.  That’s when I thought of undergoing laser treatment.

female

I have always had doubts about undergoing laser and it kind of looked and sounded complicated and I was also bothered about how much it would cost me.

I would daily watch whole-page advertisements from Beauty Clinics offering laser treatment, but I found it too scary to approach such beauty clinics.

Eventually, after I was fed up with all the skin lightening creams-bleach-skin lightening creams cycle, I decided to go to a very famous dermatologist.  He examined me and thankfully wrote ointments to get rid of the patches that were there because of the bleach.  Then, he said I would have to undergo some blood tests to find out if I was suffering from PCOD.  He offered me an entire package of tests and I told him clearly that I had PCOD, but he just wanted me to undergo the tests again to find out whether I had PCOD :headbang: :headbang:  I finally understood that there was some sort of a tie-up between the diagnostic center he was referring me to.  Finally, he quoted his price, Rs. 6000 per session for lower part of the face and it wasn’t fixed he said, it could go up ?:) :hypnotized:

Finally, I said I would get back and never did because he just wanted me to get a particular set of tests done for some sort of commission he would be getting from the diagnostic center.  I dumped the idea of laser because it all seemed so complicated and costly of course.

Two days after that, I saw a whole-page advertisement in a leading daily about a famous chain of beauty clinics offering laser treatment.  I decided to call up before I went in for the consultation.

To my surprise, the lady who had picked up my call, told me the price per session of the treatment, offered me a package, and fixed my appointment too!

The same day that I went in, she immediately called one of the therapy assistants, took me to their treatment room, made me wear a pair of laser-proof specs, marked the area, and ta-da, went on with the laser.  No blood test, no diagnosis required.

The laser that they were using I believe was of Nd-YAG and the frequency of the laser was 20% (I peeped into the sheet that the therapy assistant was filling up :shy: :victory2: ).  Since the laser was of low frequency, I did not feel much pain or stinging, just a kind of warm feeling akin to when you touch the outer layer of a flame.  However, I am not sure if it would be painful if the laser was of higher frequency.

After the laser treatment, the therapy assistant wiped my face with cotton dipped in ice and showed me the mirror to check whether there were any burns or any reactions to the laser and there were none!!!!  There was no scars, redness, stinging, or any kind of reaction on my skin and I felt pretty happy with the result.

It took hardly 10 minutes for the entire procedure including the consultation!! So that means if you are planning to get it done during your lunch hour in the office, it won’t take up much time and you can wear your makeup straight back right on!

I was given Sofradex ointment to be applied for the next two days and was advised to remain away from direct sunlight and to wear sunscreen diligently.  Also, I was told not to bleach my skin while I was undergoing cycles of treatment.

I was asked to come back in 25 days for the next session and they told me that I would require another 5 to 6 sessions for a completely hair-free face :victory2:

I was charged Rs. 4400 for therapy to my entire lower face and if I was taking a package they said I would get a total of 6 sessions plus 2 maintenance sessions and that would be for Rs. 32,000 total, but I chose to pay for individual therapy sessions.

I also inquired about laser treatment for underarm area and they said that it would be little painful but the price range would be the same, Rs. 4000 to Rs. 5000 and if taken in a package, it would cost much lesser.

After undergoing the therapy, I went to the supermarket for shopping and shopped happily because there was no reaction whatsoever.

I am so happy I went ahead with the laser therapy treatment and I am equally relieved that I can now get rid of the horrible bleaching experiences.

I hope I helped you understand how easy, risk-free, and reasonable laser therapy treatment is and if you have facial hair problems and bleach does not suit you, then surely, you can fix an appointment at a reputed clinic with experienced and certified experts to help you with the laser therapy process.

I would however request you that if you are planning to undergo treatment, please consult with clinicians of good repute or chains of beauty clinics which have good standing and name.

  1. Hi Jomol…This is a very informative article.. Thank u Thank u Thank u… :puchhi: Even i suffer from PCOD and my gynaec had asked me to do get my facial hair removed through laser but I was a bit sceptical. Even my skin is sensative. My face becomes red with rashes when i bleach, even with Oxybleach…I guess now I can find a good dermatalogist and try laser 🙂
but one question is this permanent and is there any chance of regrowth?

  3. Richa…. :puchhi: :puchhi: :puchhi: :puchhi: I have seen a few friends of mine who have undergone this treatment and if at all the hair grows back after a few years, it would be too light or not noticeable at all. Please do find a good laser clinic or dermatologist :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

  4. Richa….bleach just ruin my face, but till this time, I had no go but to bleach……just like you :puchhi: :puchhi: :puchhi: :puchhi:

  5. wow…..even i wanna remove my ugly facial hair :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: but i dont bleach as i fear i’d get a lion mane if i;d do that    i always felt that its expensive and one would have to go repetitively for sessions…..so i always think bout it and forget bout it the next day :stars: :stars: :stars: but i’d surely get it done when am in a good city :waytogo:

  6. Kanika…..Indore mein no good clinics….   :manicure: :manicure: :methinks: :methinks: :methinks:

Please inbox me on that O:) thanks 🙂

    2. Akshi….I think the best way is to see is the clinic which has branches all over India and these types of clinics follow standardized norms and regulations and treat patients dozens of patients on a daily basis…. O:) O:) O:) O:)

  8. Jomol,

WHen did you get the therapy? I mean, I have heard that hair reappear after the therapy, did you find the same?

Also, want to know one more thing. I want to write a review on Lush cream that I finished before starting my shiso cream. But I threw away the bottle 🙁 Can I still send the review and take pics from LUSH website? Plz let me know.

      1. Surabhi…..there are chances that the hair will regrow after a few years of laser therapy because unlike electrolysis laser therapy does not destroy hair follicle….but the hair that grows back is usually very light and does not appear that prominently on the face O:) O:) O:) O:)

        1. I threw it away coz I was stupid 🙁 anyway, I guess my sis may have it. I will ask her. and very good article on laser therapy. My niece wants to get laser therapy done but she is just 18 right now. She has hair on the chin. So, lets see what we do.

              1. Surabhi…you can call me Jomo…I would love to be called that and thankooo so much for the love :teddy: :teddy: :teddy: :teddy: :teddy: :puchhi: :puchhi: :puchhi: :puchhi: :puchhi: :puchhi: :puchhi: :puchhi: :puchhi: :puchhi: :puchhi: :puchhi: :puchhi:

  9. wonderful review jomol :waytogo: :waytogo:
can i add some knowledge that i learnt in my dermatology classes?

well cosmetology is becoming very popular and hence we are usually taught all this stuff nowadays..

i would just like to mension that NAD-YAG is a laser which is very frequently used in eye surgeries and hence you can deduce how risk free and sensitive it will be… :waytogo:

plus the exposure needed for hair removal is not much…
so if our skin is not reacting specifically to it and if we chose a reputed place to do it..
laser therapy is almost similar to bleaching as far as risk ratio goes..

    hope i helped

      1. Ckg…thansk for addingggggggggggggggg.. :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: ..see guys…how easy and risk free it is O:) O:) O:) O:) O:) O:)

  11. oohhh nice and relevant article….I also have thora-bahut facial hai…nothing too noticable but still…..good to know that this is a viable option. Thanks :waytogo: :waytogo: :waytogo:

  12. You are welcome oopsi….well thoda-bahut hair is mandatory :hunterwali: :hunterwali: :hunterwali: :hunterwali: :hunterwali: :hunterwali:

    1. well I have enough hair for my gyneac to make me undergo tests for PCOD (it seems i dont have it but some kinda hormonal disorder or something)

  13. Thanks a ton for posting this Jomo. Even I wanna do laser in my lower part of the face. But o was scared. Now this amazing post of urs is inspiring me :))
    Thanks a ton babes

  14. Awesome article, Jomol! :woot: :woot: I have always been curious about laser. My facial hair is very minimal but my main trouble is underarms and back. Your post has given me a little more confidence to approach some good clinic. 😀 😀 😀 Thankee! :puchhi:
When you say that they charge XYZ for something and ABC for the whole package, what does the ‘package’ entail? :idk: Many sessions working on the same part or therapy on other areas of the body? (Sorry if it sounds stupid. :P)

    1. JW……………he he …even I was curious of how I could be charged less if I took up package versus paying for individual sessions. Then, they explained that for each individual session, I would be paying 10.3% tax and that 10.3% tax would be applicable to each session. If I paid in a package, then I would have to pay tax for a single time (but then on the total amount/10.3% tax = same amount na :silly: :silly: :silly: :silly: ). Also, if I took up a package, I would get two maintenance sessions free….that means 4500 +4500 free :woot: :woot: :woot: ……..

but you know, I guess, this package offer is only to ensure that one undergoes at least 6 sessions. I guess after four sessions if I feel i don’t require any more sessions I would stop at that and will not go na whereas if I have paid a certain amount for 6 to 7 sessions, I would definitely go and get treated because I have already paid the money, never mind the phree sessions because I would have no hair to be destroyed)…..I think that’s the whole logic…..but I saw through their plan :victory2: :victory2: :victory2: :victory2: :victory2: :victory2: :victory2: :victory2: :victory2: :victory2: :victory2:

I wash i also had zero hair on my body .

  18. Hi everyone,

I usually only read the articles and don’t comment but i thought I’d give my input on this one.

I’m from Canada but i have gotten laser hair removal treatments on my face. My face would usually become red after the session and it is a bit painful especially if you have low tolerance to pain. But i still never used the numbing cream.

I got a total of 12 sessions on my entire face and the last session was 2 years ago. However, the hair still did grow a bit. Overall i would say there was a reduction of 70% which is still great because i felt so conscious and miserable before that. But the hair that still grows can easily be waxed or bleached or any other method you prefer. I might go back for retouch 2-3 times on some parts to see if that makes a difference.

But remember and hair growth is related to hormonal changes. And i was told that during pregnancy the hair might grow again. So just a heads up!

    See ya :thanks:

  23. well i had not so good experience with laser therapy. i have done 5-6 sittings at an interval the only thing was reduced growth. i mean its not like it totally stops hair growth..only the interval/duration is increased. but Jomols please ask the clinic about sofradex ointment.topical steroids are used post laser therapy but mostly i find doctors opting for fucidin or momentasone containing ointments. although sofradex is no doubt a good product. i have used this on my patients post skin-grafting (in the raw areas if any) and have seen wonderfull results…

    1. Sukanya…..oh….sorry you had a bad experience 🙁 but the going for me seems to be good for this far……..they prescribed me Sofradex Sukanya…..for a week they had asked me to apply O:) O:) O:) O:)

  25. thanx so much for this post jomol :thanks: me tho full bhalu bhalu 😥 i so want to get this done! can you temme the name of the clinic? :chewnails i’ll give you ma mail id if you want :shame: plch plch plch!!

  26. Nissy, I will send a mail to you with the clinic’s name, it has branches all over India, so that will not be a problem at all O:) O:) O:) O:) O:) O:) O:)

  27. there is a reason why blood test is required . if you have thyroid or any other harmonal imbalance there is chance that hair will grow back and laser would be of no use (told by my dermatalogist).Instead of spending thousands and regretting later it better to take the test.

Anyways lucky for you .gud that it worked for u
i got my laser done last year ,i shud say my results were avg .it has just thinned the hair on my chin ..and upperlip i dont find overwhelming result. it took 6 sessions for that ..huh and 16k lesser .huh ,May be because my hair was thick and im very light colored skin so i always end up threading them:(

    1. My sessions hurted alot too and also once i had a nose bleed after the session …could be because of it because i never had nose bleed before

      1. Nikita….you had nose bleed     I guess the laser and the frequency of the laser had to do with it. I experienced no swelling, rashes or any other reaction. Nikita, blood tests are mandatory in a situation to find out if you have any underlying health problem that is causing the outcome, in my case, the doctor wanted to find out if I had PCOD or thyroid, and I have already done tests which confirms that I have PCOD but no thyroid, so knowing that, I wouldn;t have liked to go in for another battery of tests to find out if I had PCOD….that would be very lame on my part I guess….. O:) O:) O:) O:) O:)

but Nikita…can you tell me what laser they used on you, O:) O:)

  28. i have gne for underarms laser….n am very satisfied with the results :yahoo: ….btw..i had dne the laser at kaya…just for info..

  29. Jomol this was so informative thank youuu! :puchhi: I’ve thought about it many times and decided that it was too risky. I will save up in the future and get it done for underarms. I don’t have sensitive skin so maybe it will be ok for me too *fingers crossed* you must be so relieved after all that!

  30. Jomo… :puchhi: ..thanx so much for this article..I also suffer from facial hair..very noticeable..I always refrain from clickin close up pics bcoz of this..I also use oxy bleach..but that golden hair is still noticeable..pls mail me the details na..il check.. :waaa:

  31. Hi Jomol,

I am glad ur eperience with laser was good. EVen I have PCOD, and very severe effects of those.I cry in waxing.so I got laser done for upper lip and underarms. But ther are (unhappy) side effects altho the sessions were absolutely fine. And my hair is back.I think u went to the same chain of clinics as me.
If u wanna know more,u can mail me.My id would be theer with Rati.

  32. Pragna…..I am so sorry you had side effects with the laser treatment. but during consultation itself, I was told that unlike electrolysis, with laser, there is a chance that the hair grows back, but it would be negligeble and keeping PCOD in check also helps a lot… will mail you Pragna…but getting laser done means I have respite from bleaching from which I have severe side effects, so laser for me is a very good option….will mail you nonetheless…. :)) :))

    1. I so understand the need for respite.Even now after only 30-35% reduction with side effects,I m stil considering laser 4 hands and legs (not at same clinic tho) becos me fed up of bleaching them (cant bleach face bcos of reactions),cant wax makes me cry :waaa: :waaa: and gives boils,me nt going near threading
so its very clear that I have an ultra ultra sensitive skin combined with PCOD.Hopefully,no such issues should crop up at all for u,bcos i have seen many ppl who have hardly 20-25% growth come back with no reactions

  33. Hi Yachna.i have some info to offer.I did laser and my hair came back 65-70% :headbang: :headbang: .Me too PCOD patient.

I think this happens with most PCOD patients

  34. Yachna…welcome to IMBB…. O:) O:) O:) very happy to know that you regularly check IMBB :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :happydance: :happydance: :happydance: Yachna….I was told in the begining that there is every chance that the hair would come back but would not be prominent hence can be ignored, but yachna, for me its the best option because I so hate bleaching :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :yuck:

  35. nice write up Jomol
i underwent laser hair removal therapy around 4 yrs back..in my teens..this was before we shifted to delhi
the package i opted for was 5 sessions+2 free sessions..i had horrible facial hair and i dont suffer from PCOD..i must admit my facial hair growth has reduced by 70%..but i took only 5 sessions and missed out last 2 cuz of papa’s transfer to Delhi
Now i do get facial hair..which are thicker and darker than before but yes are very less..i do katori wax once in 2 months..that keeps them at bay for a while..but now i regret for not completing my sessions
your article came as a reminder 🙂 bleaching doesnt suit me too

  39. Hi all,
I had done laser hair removal about 4 yrs back in Kaya Skin Clinic, Bangalore. But after the treatment was over about 70 percent of hair grew back. Sheer wastage of money. Then after a few yrs, I started with electrolysis. There is -american electrolysis- in kerala and I guess they have some branches outside also. After taking treatment for abt 2 yrs, I have only abt 10 percent of hair left on my face which I get it done whenever I go to Kerala. Though electrolysis is more painful and time taking, it has given me results unlike laser..

  40. Hi Jomol,

Nice post 🙂 Even I am thinking of laser hair removal but have read many scary stories in the review of popular skin clinics (skin darkening, regrowth of thick hair etc), can you please mail me also the name of the clinic where you took the treatment. I stay in Bangalore if you know any good clinics in Bangalore I would be very thankful if you mail that also.
