My Experience with Philosophy Hope In A Stick Moisturizing Lip Balm:

I love collecting lip balms (I wonder what I will do with so many!) and adding the Philosophy Hope In A Stick Moisturizing Lip Balm to my stash was very exciting. I love the packaging of Philosophy products. They are so minimalist and yet chic in the way the look. And each product propounds a ‘philosophy’ of sorts as its text. This one reads, “Hopeful words can help calm and soothe the heart”.

This lip balm is very different from all the other lip balms that I have used. For one, it is very, very glossy. It is the glossiest lip balm I have ever come across. It is a clear lip balm with no scent or fragrance, which is usually how I prefer my lip balms. The packaging is classy, sturdy and convenient to use and carry in your handbag.

Along with the glossy sheen that this lip balm delivers, I find it to be fairly moisturising. I wouldn’t describe it as intense hydration though (I have used more hydrating lip balms). This will work well on dry and chapped lips (but I would recommend exfoliating flaky lips first) to restore the moisture. However, because it is so glossy, it tends to slip around the mouth and also transfer a fair bit. To keep your lips hydrated, you will have to reapply it every couple of hours. I also don’t like to use this at night for the same reason. It’s too glossy and therefore transfers on to the pillow etc. However, keep in mind that it does not feel heavy, uncomfortable or waxy on the lips. It’s a fairly lightweight formula.

This lip balm is not the best choice for daytime wear either because it does not contain any SPF. What I find this best for is to use on top of a very matte or drying lipstick to add a hint of gloss and to keep the lips moisturised. It’s not the best lip balm to be used before applying lipstick as it is too slippery and it won’t keep your lipstick in place. For wearing underneath a lipstick, I prefer a matte, dry-texture lip balm.

Like some lip balms, I don’t find that this dries my lips out or makes them flaky over hours of wear. Some lip balms do that to my lips! This one keeps my lips in a decent condition. However, this is not my go-to lip balm for all the reasons stated above.

Pros of Philosophy Hope In A Stick Moisturizing Lip Balm:

– Glossy and moisturising lip balm.
– Works well for dry, chapped lips.
– Unscented and clear.
– Great for wearing on top of matte and drying lipsticks.
– Does not dry out the lips further, like some lip balms do.
– Easy to use and chic, sturdy and convenient packaging.

Cons of Philosophy Hope In A Stick Moisturizing Lip Balm:

– Because it is glossy lip balm, it is not long-lasting and will need to be applied more frequently than other lip balms.
– Not the best choice for wearing underneath lipstick for the same reason.
– No SPF, so it’s not a good choice for daytime use.

My Verdict on Philosophy Hope In A Stick Moisturizing Lip Balm:

This is not my all-in-one, go-to lip balm. I like it best over a matte or drying lipstick. Apart from that, it is decent formula. It’s a cute product to add to your stash of lip balms, if you like experimenting with them. But it’s not something that I would highly recommend.
