Pixi + Caroline Hirons Double Cleanse Review

Skin type: Combination to oily / dehydrated / skin pigmentation / periodic acne and acne scars

Hey gorgeous gals,

Today’s review is special because I am so in awe of the person whose name is on this product, Caroline Hirons. Pixi is obviously a well-known UK brand, but the name Caroline Hirons is no less than a brand itself! I don’t know what the appeal is – the fact that she is a brand and a retail consultant in the beauty industry, she is a trained aesthetician – including a post-graduate course from France (so she knows what she is talking about). She has 30-year plus experience in the skincare industry (Yup! She has more under the “experience” header than some of her readers have under the age header). She is bothered to share her immense knowledge through her blog/YouTube/Instagram and has a wicked Brit sense of humor (which her followers adore). She has a no-nonsense approach with a totally unbiased take on products – despite constantly working with numerous brands and has hands-on experience from her own practice as well. Needless to say, consulting her once and getting her signature facial (upward of GBP 175) is on my bucket list! Ok, I really need to stop gushing and get on with the review.

My Experience with Pixi + Caroline Hirons Double Cleanse:

Pixi + Caroline Hirons Double Cleanse Review Box

So, since time immemorial, her fan club has been asking her to launch her own skincare brand. While that hasn’t happened, she has launched this product in collaboration with Pixi – with whom she is working as a consultant – apart from her other commitments. And not surprisingly, the product is “Double Cleanse” – a process that she has advocated since ages. So, let us get on with the review and find out if the product lives up to the hype of having that name on its packaging!!

Pixi + Caroline Hirons Double Cleanse Review Tub

Packaging: The product comes packaged in a substantial plastic tub. The lid is a normal twist up cap. The contents are further covered with a plastic separator. The product comprises of a solid cleansing oil and a separate cleansing cream – which are set into the tub in separate compartments shaped like Yin-Yang. Conceptually, the packaging is great because you have both products that you will use on a daily basis – together and easily accessible.

Pixi + Caroline Hirons Double Cleanse Review Spilled

However, I ordered this product twice and each time it came with the cleansing cream spilling into the solid oil and even outside the plastic separator. On one occasion, it had spilled out of the box itself, spoiling the outer cover. The packaging is definitely a challenge here. While using it on a day to day basis – this may not prove to be an issue. But I would definitely not travel with it. Neither would I be comfortable ordering it online. This is a product which one would need to buy from a physical store.

Also, would everyone finish both products at the same speed? Debatable.

Product: Caroline Hirons has advocated the use of a double cleanse method in PM to be the first step of your skincare regime. Your skincare will not have as much of an impact if it’s applied on a skin which still has residual makeup / sunscreen, etc. So, Double Cleanse – once to remove makeup and a second time to treat the skin. And that is exactly what the product is all about. Let us discuss each product individually:

Pixi + Caroline Hirons Double Cleanse Review Oil and Cream

Solid Cleansing Oil: This is exactly what it says – a solid cleansing balm – quite like the one you have from Clinique, The Body Shop, etc. And if you haven’t seen any of those, just imagine coconut oil in a jar in winters. Ok? So, the product is not fragranced. There is a funky oil smell, which is understandable considering it is a solidified oil. So, you scoop out a dollop sized amount and rub it between the fingers of your hands and it readily liquefies into the oil. Massage this gently onto your face. The oil is packed with Vitamin E to protect and condition, Camellia Oil rich in Omega to nourish and Evening Primrose Oil to heal and moisturize. It will start breaking down your makeup – sunscreen, base (foundation, powder, etc), lips and even eyes. Take a bit more time over your eyes to ensure everything breaks down – mascara, kohl, liner, etc. It is fairly thorough in its impact. Taking away almost 98-99% of my makeup. Ever since my eye infection, I have been a bit wary and ensure I go over my eyes with an eye-specific makeup remover. I use the one from MAC. When I do, I sometimes see a bit of my liner from the lower lashline / waterline or a flake or two of mascara. So, while it is fairly effective on its own and can be used on a daily basis readily – for days that you have used heavy eye makeup – I suggest that you err on the side of caution and just swipe the eye area with an eye makeup remover too. While cleansing the eye area, I did not feel too comfortable. The product did not sting my eyes, but I can feel a slight discomfort, which goes off as I wash away the product. Normally, I probably wouldn’t have paid attention to it, but I did because one, when you are reviewing a product, you tend to get evaluate more critically and two, because my beloved Shuuemura Cleansing oil A/Oxi does not feel uncomfortable at all.

You can remove it by cleansing your face with water or with a moist face cloth. Once cleaned off, there is no residue left behind, at all. Overall, I think it works really well and is an essential step in cleansing your facial skin. Post using this, my skin feels clean and clear. There is no feeling of stretchiness which comes from all essential oils being wiped off your skin. Your skin looks and feels like – well, skin!!

The company has an existing Cleansing Nourishing Balm and I thought maybe it is the same product. However, if you compare the ingredient list, you realize that though both have an oil base, they are not the same products. Also, this is fragrance and alcohol-free.

Pixi + Caroline Hirons Double Cleanse Review Swatch

Cleansing Cream: The cleansing cream forms step 2 of the PM Double Cleanse ritual. This is a cleanser for your skin, not a makeup remover. This is supposed to be a soothing treat for the skin – which cleanses your skin, balances it and make it ready for the application of the acids/serums/treatments/oils, etc – which will go on after this. It has Vitamin C to promotes collagen production, a Peptide Complex to help relax lines and plump the skin, and Arginine to improve overall cell renewal and elasticity. You are supposed to take a coin-sized amount and massage into the skin. Honestly, I feel you definitely need more than a coin sized amount to be able to go through the massage motion on our skin. You gently massage your skin with it. It is almost like a little treat for your skin. Once done, like for a minute or two, wipe your skin with a moist face cloth. Though I have been using this from time to time, I am still always amazed by the impact this product has on my skin. Once wiped off with a moist face cloth, your skin looks and feels just so fresh and amazing. The high point of the skin actually catch light – that’s how clean and healthy and radiant it makes your natural skin look. Honestly, if Pixi would just release the Cleansing Cream separately in a tube, I would be all over it!! I mean, I would really stock it up, for life!

Together, they work absolutely beautifully! It is a no-brainer approach to Double Cleanse. You do not need to try to figure what your skin requires – what makeup remover and what cleanser to go for. This, one product, takes care of the cleansing steps perfectly and so comfortably!

Pros of Pixi + Caroline Hirons Double Cleanse:

• Should work well for all skin types (Ms. Hirons does not appreciate people breaking down products on the basis of skin type, but I am still stating this as most readers will understand the connotation)
• Extremely effective
• Gentle on the skin
• Does not leave the skin feeling stretchy or stripped off of all natural oils
• Fragrance-free
• Alcohol-free
• Does not break me out
• Does not irritate the skin

Cons of Pixi + Caroline Hirons Double Cleanse:

• Packaging needs to be relooked
• Availability; more easily available in US and UK

IMBB Rating:
A 4.8/5 product

This is an amazing product; absolutely worth trying. And no, I am not saying this because I am besotted with Ms. Hirons. I say this because I genuinely believe that it is imperative for us to effectively remove all makeup before putting on our skincare. And this product takes care of this essential step – so easily, gently and effectively. I recommend this 100%.

  1. I have this product in my cart and was hoping to read few reviews before buying. And this review just came on time! 😀 It sure is a good product but now I am in fix due to the packaging. Okay, just tell me this – will you still buy this product even if you get the spilled packaging for third time? 🙂

    1. Hey Madhur! Yes, I would still buy it – but only if i could buy it from the store itself. Or if someone can get it for me from the store and ensure that the inner cover is taped securely. See, product spillage is not just about things getting gross – it is actually product loss. It isn’t your money’s worth if half the Cleansing cream gets spilled out in transit.
