How to reduce excessive feet sweating

Sweat glands act as the body’s natural thermostat but for some they pose a socially embarrassing situation almost daily. There are many people looking for ways to prevent sweating, and most of them are suffering from an excessive sweating condition known medically as hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis, is a medical condition resulting in intense sweating. A person suffering from hyperhidrosis may experience excessive sweating in more than one area of the body. In many cases, hyperhidrosis has resulted in low self esteem and self-conscious in a person.
Besides hot, humid weather, stress and anxiety, there are other triggers for sweaty palms and feet like over consumption of caffeinated drinks and alcohol, hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), some medicinal drugs (such as certain painkillers, cardiovascular drugs and antidepressants), hyperthyroidism etc.

Unless you have a medical problem that’s causing your feet to sweat excessively and produce an odor, you can treat it yourself by using these home remedies:

• Put 4-5 mugs of warm water in a bucket and add 1/2 cup vinegar in it. Soak your feet for 15 to 20 minutes. Then, dry your feet well- don’t forget the spaces in between your toes. There’s no need to rinse your feet after this treatment.

• Deal with foot odour by soaking your feet in strong black tea for half an hour daily for 7 days. The tannic acid in the tea destroys bacteria and closes the pores keeping the feet dry for longer periods.

• Combine 1 teaspoon of honey, 1 teaspoon of vinegar in a full glass of water and take this tonic about three times a day, on an empty stomach about 30 minutes before meals or 1 1/2 hours after a meal.

• Mix two tablespoons of Epsom salts in two quarts of warm to clean and freshen up the feet, this solution will also help keep feet dry for long.

Always remember to:

• Wash your feet with a good anti-bacterial soap on a regular basis to get rid of odour causing bacteria. Make sure to rinse and dry your feet well after washing them.

• Wear open or light shoes and sandals whenever you can to allow your feet to breathe and stay dry. Wearing heavy, enclosed shoes or boots, or wearing plastic or rubber shoes or boots that doesn’t allow your feet to breathe will only add to the problem.

Feet-first

• Never wear synthetic socks, materials such as nylon and acrylic, as these materials do not absorb moisture well and so restrict the breathing efficiency of your skin.

• Avoid caffeine and spicy foods.

• Use relaxation techniques such as meditation and deep breathing to control the stress that can trigger sweaty palms.
