How to Remove Oil Stains from Clothes

Getting rid of stains from the fabric is indeed a herculean task. And the rigid oil stains make it even worse. No matter how cautious you are stains are something that must have ruined atleast one of your garments. Oil stains are the most frequent ones that pay a visit to our clothes. Last night, while getting a head massage I had to deal with a big spot of hair oil. I was too tired to try any trick on it so I left it untouched. It did not bother me much because the stain was on my old t-shirt. Lucky me. But, before I mess up with my other garments I thought to try some stain removal tricks on it.

The sooner you deal with a greasy stain, the better the outcome will be. Written below are some tips that might help you to deal with oil stains.

Tips to remove oil stains:

• To remove oil stains from cotton fabric rub cornstarch or talcum powder over the stain. Let it sit for 20 minutes. Brush it off with a soft cloth or brush.
• To remove oil stains from the silk fabric use talcum powder. Sprinkle the powder and let it stay for around 20 minutes. Brush away the excess powder off the fabric. Cornstarch can also be used in place of talcum powder.
• Sprinkle baking soda on the stain to soak up the remaining oil. Soak the cloth in dish washing liquid and hot water for half an hour. If the stain still remains apply a thick paste of baking soda and water on it. After it has dried, brush it off and wash again.
• Apply acetone (nail polish remover) on the oil stain. Allow it to sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Wash as usual.
• Baby oil, hair oil stains etc. can be removed by rubbing the area with a dishwashing liquid. Apply it on the fabric and let it stay for 15 to 20 minutes. Wash the fabric in hot water. Repeat the entire process if some stain remains.
• Saturating the stained area with rubbing alcohol, then blot with a clean white cloth. Wash as usual.
• Rub an oil stain with paint thinner. It will break up the stain. Place an old cloth directly under the stain and then give it a good rub. Wash it in the washer alone and dry alone as well. (You might want to test on a small area of fabric first).
• Lighter fluid is also very effective in removing the oil stain. Scrub a little bit of lighter fluid on an oil stain and it will be gone without much effort.

Remove Oil Stains
Always remember to:

• Do a patch test before trying any stain removal tips on your fabric.
• Also, avoid excess rubbing as it may damage the fabrics colour, fiber and finish.
• Always start with the mildest stain remover technique and then go in for the stronger one.

I will definitely try these tricks on that t-shirt and see for myself which one is the best.

  1. I use normal talcum powder and it always works…i put it on the oil mark and let it be in the sun the whole day and then wash the garment in the washing machine n the stain is gone 🙂

    1. Try this Noopur :-

To remove makeup stains, rub shampoo or dish detergent (preferrably a grease cutting formula like Vim drops), or shampoo into the stain. You could also try spraying with hairspray or using a non-oily makeup remover to remove the stain. Then, launder as usual.
