Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Suede Lipstick in Trendsetter Review

Hello all,

Today, I am reviewing a lipstick for you – Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Suede Lipstick in the shade “Trendsetter.” I also possess the shade “Muse” from this collection and I have mixed feelings about it. But when I saw that my local supermarket had a discount on this lipstick, I could not resist myself and ended up picking the shade “Trendsetter.” Read on to find out more.

My Experience with Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Suede Lipstick in Trendsetter:

Packaging:  This lipstick comes in a sleek packaging with a clear cap. The clear cap makes it easy to see the actual color of the lipstick. This is quite handy if you are buying the lipstick from a store where you cannot test it. I find the packaging a bit flimsy and I am always worried that the cap is going to crack. The color of the packaging matches that of the lipstick which helps telling the lipsticks apart if you have more than one of them.

Shade:  Trendsetter is a beautiful raspberry shade – the perfect combination of red and pink. It will suit Indian skin tones and will look lovely with traditional Indian wear. It is a vibrant shade and adds instant brightness to your face. Those of you who rock reds will find this to be an everyday shade. It is especially perfect to wear at night.

Texture/Finish/Pigmentation: The lipstick glides quite smoothly on the lips and you do not need to tug it at all. It feels quite plush and comfortable like suede at first. It takes about 10-15 minutes for setting and then the texture changes and starts feeling dry. If you have dry lips, it accentuates the lines and starts settling into the lines. You definitely need to exfoliate and hydrate your lips before using this lipstick.

Here I would like to compare the texture with another shade that I own – Muse. Muse feels sticky and messy after setting. It fades away unevenly leaving patches on my lips and generally looks quite tacky. I was happy to find out that Trendsetter has a better texture compared to Muse.

Trendsetter is quite a pigmented shade and you can make do with one swipe as well. I personally layer on 2 swipes as I have pigmented lips. Happy to note that layering does not make the application patchy or cakey.

Revlon claims that this lipstick is “food proof.” Well, if you are going to pop in small bites of appetizers into your mouth and sip your drinks with a straw, then it definitely is “food proof.” 😛 But, as soon as you decide to sink your teeth into a burger, not even the lipstick Gods can save you 😛 Personally, I am fine to reapply my lipsticks whenever the need arises. Trendsetter is relatively long lasting and transfer free, but it definitely comes at a price: your lips feel dry and you are left with a patchy mess if you rub your lips together.

To summarize, Trendsetter is a beautiful shade which will flatter most skin tones. However, the texture of the lipstick is quite tricky and needs a lot of effort to make it work – your lips need to be in perfectly exfoliated state and you might have to top it up with a lip gloss once in a while. Probably not worth the price that you are paying for this lipstick.

Pros of Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Suede Lipstick in Trendsetter:

  • Beautiful raspberry shade which will flatter Indian skin tones.
  • Glides smoothly on lips.
  • Decently pigmented.
  • Long-lasting and transfer free.

Cons of Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Suede Lipstick in Trendsetter:

  • Tends to get drying as time passes.
  • Lips need to be exfoliated prior to use.
  • Might have to top it up with a lip gloss.
  • Rubbing your lips together leaves a patchy mess.
  • Packaging is quite flimsy.

Would I Repurchase/Recommend Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Suede Lipstick in Trendsetter?

If you do not have dry lips and like the color and get it at a major discount, you may want to try this lipstick. Otherwise, you can give it a pass.  Well, I should have followed the age old adage: “Once bitten, twice shy” and stopped at Muse. However, I gave it a second chance and it failed again! I will definitely not repurchase.
