What is a stress rash?

Stress puts your body in a state of extreme tension, and releases a great deal of cortisol and adrenaline into your blood stream – both of which are known to lead to skin reactions. Stress can also make it harder for skin problems to heal.

For reasons that are still not entirely clear, stress also causes skin conditions to get worse. If you have:

• Psoriasis
• Eczema
• Acne
• Rosacea
• Herpes etc

Symptoms of Stress Rash:

Stress rash can appear all over the body, Stomach, face, back and arms are the areas which are usually affected by the appearance of stress rash. Slow metabolism and hormone deregulation can result in the development of extreme cases of stress rash. These rashes may itch and, sometimes, swelling of the eyelids and tongue may accompany difficult breathing in severe cases.

Tips to prevent or treat a stress rash:

• Since stress hinders the response of the immune system, any reduction in stress levels will help boost the body’s ability to combat skin complications.

• Avoid scratching any wound or swelling on your skin, as doing can intensify the problem and may even lead to bacterial infection if the skin is broken.

• Stay away from sun as much as possible, as prolong sun exposure may cause the skin to swell or perspire more which will only irritate your skin more.

• Taking cool baths or applying a compress made from chamomile tea will help control itching and thus decrease a stress rash’s duration. Avoid the use of hot water.

• Avoid the consumption of dairy products, chocolate and coffee as these food items can trigger this skin condition even more. The immune system can receive a lot of boost from the intake of antioxidants and specific vitamin supplements. Consumption of Vitamins C and B12 have shown to reduce the risk of stress rash.

In case of severe skin conditions professional help is recommended. Your doctor may recommend some prescription antihistamines or other medications to help control stress rashes.
