Sephora Supreme Cleansing Oil Review

Sephora Supreme Cleansing Oil Review

By now you must already know that I am loving my cleansing oils and raving about them as a product category. So while I picked up the Bobbi Brown Cleansing Oil, I also was on the lookout for a cheaper option. While browsing through Sephora in Dubai, I came across the Sephora Supreme Cleansing oil and thought – why not? It was definitely more pocket friendly than Bobbi Brown or Shu Uemura, but does it live up to its predecessors? Let’s find out:

Sephora Supreme Cleansing Oil

Product Details:

A gentle makeup remover suitable for all skin types.  Remove every trace of even the most resistant makeup with this soap-free formula. There’s no need for cotton pads, simply pump into the hands and rub onto dry skin. Add water to change the oil into smooth lotion. Effective yet gentle, this cleansing oil is suitable for sensitive skin and leaves the face soft and perfectly cleansed, without an oily film.  It is formulated without parabens, sulfates, synthetic dyes, phthalates, GMO’s, Triclosan.  This cleansing oil has been dermatologically and ophthalmogically tested.

Suggested Usage Instructions:

  • Apply to dry skin.
  • Do not add water.
  • Pump once in the hand and rub on dry skin.
  • Add water to change oil into lotion.
  • Rinse with warm water.
  • To remove waterproof mascara – gently rub lashes together between index finger and thumb before adding water.

Price:

US $15 / Dhs 57 = INR 970 for 190 ml.

Packaging:

It comes in a transparent green plastic bottle with a pump, which can be locked by twisting it. The size is not very convenient, but still travel friendly compared to the previous ones I tried. Also, the locking mechanism ensures that it’s safe to travel with it.

My Experience with Sephora Supreme Cleansing Oil:

You know I love cleansing oils to strip off makeup from my face at the end of the day, you get to massage the skin and at the same time remove all traces of makeup.  The oil is a transparent runny liquid. You need to apply it to dry skin (meaning application and not skin type – “dry” as in “not-wet”). I pump the product onto my palm. I rub the product onto my face and neck, in parts, including eye area and lips. You need about 2 pumps for the full face and neck, each pump dispenses a fairly large amount of product.

Sephora Supreme Cleansing Oil

The product dissolves all makeup, dirt, grime, excess sebum from the face and neck. This part is pretty similar to my experience with Shu and Bobbi Brown. However, once the makeup is dissolved, when I splash water on my face and neck, the oil does not create a ready emulsion – like Shu and Bobbi Brown cleansing oils did. On the contrary, it creates a slimy gunk, which needs to be rinsed out repeatedly to remove all traces from the skin. Meaning, the product does not emulsify easily. It takes effort and a bit of rubbing to get the oily suspension off your face. Yes, you do get a squeaky clean face post removal of the suspension, but it takes effort.

Sephora Cleansing Oil

The first time I used it, I could not understand why the product was not emulsifying. So, I actually used a face wash on top of it to get rid of the suspension. The second time around, I told myself – PATIENCE! So, I continued splashing water on my face and rubbing off the product and soon I had a clean face.

Now, there are 2 points to be noted here:

1. Sephora’s description of the product clearly states that the product will form a “lotion” post mixing with water. It does not talk about emulsification like the other products did.
2. Post mixing with water, I expected it to break down faster because of my experience with Shu Uemura and Bobbi brown products which did break down much more quickly and with much less effort. Had I not used them prior, I may have found this time taken or effort applied to be normal.

Sephora Cleansing Oil

All I can say is that you get your money’s worth. I picked the product not because of rave reviews about it but because I was looking for something cheaper. So, I got something cheaper, effective but which takes a bit more effort.

Refer pics for its impact on makeup. The black line is a waterproof mascara. It worked fairly decently on it too, you can only see a bare trace of it at the end. So, the product works well on waterproof makeup – including mascara.

One other difference I felt with the Sephora cleansing oil was that my face felt squeaky clean – meaning totally devoid of anything. So, while there is no oily film left on the skin, neither is there a feeling of suppleness or nourishment. You do need a moisturizer to be applied post using this. This does not mean that the product is harsh, it works well as a makeup cleanser but not necessarily as something, which nourishes the skin.  Please note Sephora has NOT made any claim that the product nourishes the skin either.

Sephora Cleansing Oil

To sum this up for you:

Pros of Sephora Supreme Cleansing Oil:

  • Will work well for all skin tones.
  • Removes makeup extremely effectively – also long-wear products including waterproof mascara.
  • Does not cause the skin to feel tight – like some harsh cleansers do.
  • Leaves no residue or stickiness on the face.
  • Did not cause any skin irritation or breakouts.
  • Easy to dispense and apply – bottle has a pump.
  • Easy to store and carry, the pump can be locked by twisting the nozzle.
  • Leaves skin feeling squeaky clean.

Cons of Sephora Supreme Cleansing Oil:

  • Takes a bit of work to remove the emulsified lotion off the skin (post mixing with water).
  • Need to moisturize the skin post application.

IMBB Rating:

4/5

It’s a good product for someone who wants to try cleansing oils, but yes, definitely not the best one out there. You have to keep in mind that to get the best out there – you will need to shell out way more money also.

Do I Recommend Sephora Supreme Cleansing Oil?

Yes.

Would I Repurchase Sephora Supreme Cleansing Oil?

I think I would shell out the extra money and buy Shu Uemura instead.

    1. U said it right SUmera….this one’s a great product to try Cleansing oils. N no, Im not working anywhere. Its just that kid’s have summer vacations on and that does not allow me much me time to dedicate on other pursuits like writing a review!

  1. i think i am picking this or the bobbi brown one after i finish off my clarins facial oil. :)) good review. the green bottle looks quite refreshing. :))

    1. I would suggest Bobbi Brown over this – since it breaks down more easily. I myself want to try MAC one too since that is without Mineral oils.
