Silver and Grey Smokey Eyes Look

Silver and Grey Smokey Eyes Look

First of all, I have to confess that I do not like doing eye makeup tutorials :silly:

The reason: I have a very difficult eye shape for smokey eyes, since my eyes are googly eyes (think of a frog) as well as there are more and more wrinkles appearing on the lids the last years. Also the lids got a little bit heavy, not really hoodge but…  old lady, told ya.  Furthermore it is really difficult to capture smokey eye make ups on camera, every close-up makes your nose looking like a big potatoe and makes every pore looking like a scratch. But, if you really want to show it, you have to do close-ups.

Silver and Grey is one of the most often used combinations for smokey eyes. I really recommend to use grey and not brown for winter color type – or, if you are using brown, make sure, it is a cool one. Grey fits smokey eyes better and makes you look more fresh, plus: It´s easy to pimp with black to make a great evening make up out of your casual make up. You can use every kind of grey (if it´s not too bright), for this look I used a deep, soft shimmering grey. When you use eyeshadows with soft shimmer (Satin finish, Pearl finish, Veluxe pearl finish etc.) you will recognize that they are nice lightcatchers, so by using deeper writing shimmery colors or darker shimmery colors it depends on the light how intense the eye make up appears. I used to use more matte colors and I still use them for dramatic effects but, at least, they accentuate every little wrinkle and that´s why I started using them only in combination with shimmery colors a few years ago.

There are several techniques to get a nice smokey finish, it´s all about blending. You will have half of the job done with a good blending brush. Especially for smokey eyes I prefer to work from deep to bright and from outer corner to inner corner of the eye.

So, here is the naked truth:

Eyes without makeup
Eyes without makeup

And here is the procedure to make something out of it 😉

Prime face and eyes and put on your favorite eyeshadow base.

Then apply a dark, soft shimmery eyeshadow on you upper lid, working from outer corner to inner corner of your eye – I used the MAC 239 brush for this. Using the same brush apply a silver or a white silver eyeshadow from the inner corner to the middle of your lid, softly blending it into the grey. It depends on the shape of your eyes and the look you want to create how far you blend the silver in. Take a (crease) blending brush and blend the dark grey into your crease, working from outer to inner corner ( I used MAC 226). Make sure that you have no harsh lines left. Go ahead and blend 😉

Take a small pointed brush or a small angled brush and apply the grey eyeshadow under your eye, working from the outer to the inner corner, this will blend out the grey from deep dark to softer shade. After that you can use an eyeliner or an eyepencil to line the upper lid – I used the same eyeshadow since most eyeliners accentuate wrinkles :silly:  If you want the look very smokey, use a pointed brush to softly smudge the eyepencil into the eyeshadow. For a more dramatic look you can apply a harsh, black line.

Working with light: Less light makes the dark grey look deeper and more dramatic

Then take a blending brush and highlight your eye, I used the MAC 224 and MAC Mylar as matte highlighter; softly blend the higlighter from eyebrow into the edge of the dark grey. When you have googly eyes, sculpt the inner corner with a darker, matte shade.

A lot of eyeshapes appear very round when you accentuate the whole eye with one dark shade. So here is a little trick: Take the silver shadow and apply it under your eye, highlight the middle area and softly blend the bright eyeshadow into the dark. This little accent will make your eyes appear less round and more shiny :-))

Apply faux lashes. I just made the photos before I put on the mascara so that you can see these are really falsies 😀  But I am quite sure most of you will not need any faux lashes since indian beauties mostly have beautiful, long lashes. Put on mascara, if you have applied faux lashes, just work your lashes into the falsies. Then apply Khol on your waterline.

Fill in the brows – same here: Most of you will not have to do that 🙂  But I have to.

So just fit you brows the way you usually do.

Conceal the under-eye area and then go ahead with concealer and your foundation, sculpting, blush and lip make-up. For casual look this eye make up fits very good with soft pink lips, for a more dramatic look you can use a deep magenta/fuchsia or an intense red lipstick, violet will make it look famous as well.

And here is the look, since the close-up mode of the cam made my nose looking gargantuanic, half of the face:

Could have “cleaned” the lower lashes with a small brush, sorry for that.
We had about 30 minutes good daylight here before it started raining again and so I was in big hurry to take the pics :silly:

    1. Thank you very much Jas :-))

I am more and more into faux lashes for casual use, since there are several fauxies available only pimping the shape and lenght 🙂 Also it is very easy to create dramatic looks with all the drama-fauxies :inlove:

    1. Yes, it was limited and I was reall wondering the Feline Khol wasn´t in the Fabulous Felines Edition ?:-) But I am quite sure there will be a repromote of the Feline Khol since it got very popular.

    2. I guess you have much better Khols there in India than Feline is … I mean: SEVEN hours on waterline… whew…. I really have to try this one, since I read your review on it I am checking ebay India :silly:

      1. ha ha ..You know I am not much aware of the International courier process or else I would have sent it for you. :(( I had tough time sending stuff when I last did an international giveaway.

Let me check again and I’ll let you know.:))

Oh, did the mascara finally arrive? :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) I have to check my email :-))
So it is ten days and more to India registered mail 😯 – well, not that fast as I expected… and this means the mini giveaway prizes will not arrive this week… but at least the most important thing is: it arrived :beauty:

  4. OMG you guys are so nice :beauty: :beauty: :-* :-*

I have to confess that I was asked to do eye make up tutorials for several blogs – and I never did it. My cam is not that good and does not really capture the work (but captures the pores :silly:) and, as I already mentioned, my eye shape is not that nice as it was a few years ago, … getting older :silly:.

But you guys really made my week with all of your indian beauty brands suggestions and I wanted to give back a little bit of this fun and joy :-* :-* :-* :-* I am so glad you like this look, ladies :-)) :-)) TY :-* :-* :-*

  5. We will copycat Tajana.. 😀 😀 And me got MAC eye shadows also now.. 😀 😀 me got a decent black eye shadow also now.. 😀 No more VOV black :curse: :curse: me got silver grey also 😀 😀

    1. Grrrrrrrrrr…Rati..stop :announce: :announce: about your MAC shopping..I have left something for you in some other post…a fly buzzing thing..I do not want to dattttteee Tatjana’s post :smug: Ohhhh and I like copycat idea..:cat: :cat2:

    2. Yea, you go girl. Just do it :-))

Since you have beautiful, young skin you can also use a matte colour for the outer corner and the crease, a very nice MAC matte dark grey is Graphology. Then, a little bit brighter and shimmery: MAC Knight Divine, which is blueish middle-tone grey (Veluxe Pearl finish, intense colorstaying shade).

As you are a classical winter color type you can use black without looking “overloaded” :-)) When it comes to matte blacks I have to say that I do not consider MAC´s Carbon as a good matte black at all. I mean, when you are used to do make up you can work with it but Carbon is a product having one outstanding skill: Looking good in the pot. Much better and the best matte black I ever used is the MUFE No. 4 – an amazing texture, easy to apply and to blend :inlove:

      1. OMG!!! I just bought MAC Carbon today. :(( I used to use a very shady black eye shadow so I am kind of liking mac carbon. I was very confused about picking up colours today so just picked up three. Actually I liked typographic more but then everyone was stressing at carbon so I was like let’s give it a go kinds.

I will check out these colours for sure. I have lots of pan space in my palette. I will keep asking you for the shade suggestions. 🙂

        Thank you. :-* :-*

    3. Typographic is much better than Carbon, your own choice was right, dear :-* :-* :-*
Amazing matte squared texture. Another amazing matte squared shadow was Signed, Sealed – such a shame MAC discontinued that shade… it was selling good at the pro stores but not at the counters, since the color looks like a dirty nothing in the pot. BUT: It is the most versatile matte shadow I ever used in my life. If you can get it anywhere: Lucky you. I bought several backups of Signed, Sealed – and I hope I will not run out of….

If you did not touch Carbon yet, bring it back the next time you visit the store and take Typographic for it 😉 MUFE No 4 is so much better – beyond words.

      1. Sigh!! so much for listening to SAs. :)) I have kind of used it . I was too eager. 😛 😛 But anyway since I have always used a cheapo quality matte black I am kind of liking it. he h eh e

Signed sealed..hmm let me check but I wonder if they will have it. as it is not everything some to India. 🙁

I will get MUFE no 4 for sure, if I can. 🙂

  6. OMG Tatjana!!! the last picture….is so so so so so beuatiful!!!!! :inlove: :inlove:
I am just staring staring at it……loooooove it :-* :-*
And what a transformation

      1. 😛 😛 😛 :pain: :pain: 😉 😉 😉 Nope, lol – your comments appeared after my reloading of the page :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

  7. oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo :inlove: :inlove: :inlove: :inlove: :inlove: :inlove: :inlove: :inlove: :inlove: :inlove: :inlove: Tatjana……you look like some classic beauty from those very elegant hollywood movies…. 😛

    1. Thanks a lot jomol, how nice of you :-* :-* :-*
Since I am an old lady I guess I would need some botox for any Hollywood movie :silly: :silly: 😀

    1. Thanks a lot Insiya :-* :-* :-*
You should try it, it´s really easy with a good blending brush.

      There are two main techniques:
Blening out and blending in. Most of the beauties get an idea of how to do their favorite eye make up when they start to blend light/bright colors into deeper writing/dark colors. This technique is more easy than just blend a dark color out. You get the best results by combination of both techniques, but blending bright colors in or applying them on dark colors often delivers the AHA-effect: “A-HA, that´s how it will work for me!” :-)) :-))

    1. Thank you Farha 🙂

Really: just start doing it :-))
You will notice that you get better rapidly by trying out :-* :-* :-*
It does not need that much practice as most people think 🙂 and you will find out quickly which look/technique fits best to your type, eyeshape etc. just by doing.

      1. :-)) Yes, f. e. there are several looks looking fabulous on my friends but are not good for me.
I have big, googly eyes and so I cannot wear styles which make the eye shape/contour round(er)…. looks horrible. But I have friends from Hongkong looking great with this kind of eye make up. Also older beauties and/or beautis with hoodge lids have to deal with lids you cannot apply a classical pinup-eye-makeup-style on, this does not work. So much depends of the shape of the eye…. f.e. if you have lot of space between eye and brow you can (and often have to) wear different make up style than a person with hoodge lids, small eyes, less space there etc.

So it is not really possible to do a general tutorial for everybody out there in the world wide web, all we can do are general “guidelines” and suggestions for several eyeshapes.

  8. One important note on make-up in general:

You really get half of the job done with good tools.
When you start buying your basics/basic kit, take care that you get good brushes/tools.
So at the beginning you should invest in brushes, start with a basic eyebrush set and then add more brushes little by little.

For example MAC, I would pick up the following brushes for a basic eyebrush kit:

    – 239 or
    – 219
    – 210 or 209
    – 217

especially the 217 is a very versatile brush, at least you can do a whole eye make up with the 217; so if I would go on a trip and could take only one eye makeup brush with me, it definitely would be the 217 🙂

  9. Thnx a ton for da tips Tatjana…dis was supposed to be ma nxt query in ask IMBB!!!!!! 😀

Can u name basic MAC brushes for face and lips tooo…for beginners like me :-(( …i dnt wanna invest too much for starters 😉 ……. Again thnx a lot!!!!

  10. the look is si dramatic so glamoruos and just peerrfect…!!! i wanted to say mmore but im at loss of words!!

tooo god :inlove: :inlove: :inlove: :inlove: 😀 :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star:
