Skin Care Benefits of Tea Tree Oil

About tea tree oil from Wikipedia:

Tea tree oil is an essential oil with a fresh camphoraceous odor and a color that ranges from pale yellow to nearly colorless and clear. It is taken from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia, which is native to Southeast Queensland and the Northeast coast of New South Wales, Australia. Tea tree oil should not be confused with tea oil, the sweet seasoning and cooking oil from pressed seeds of the tea plant”

Since the day we learn about tea tree oil for oily and acne prone skin, we start sticking with skin care products with tea tree oil, The Body Shop has an entire range dedicated to this and many other brands make the most of this fact. I think we should know how and what exactly it does for our skin before we just plunge into products which make the most of these three words ” tea tree oil”.

The chemicals in tea tree oil kill bacteria and fungus and combat allergic reactions. Tea tree leaves are known for their antiseptic and antifungal abilities. Australians started using tea tree leaves for the skin to heal cuts, burns and infections.

Tea tree oil is applied to the skin for infections such as acne, fungal infections of the nail , scabies and ring worm etc. This is a far more natural remedy than usage of chemicals like benzoyl peroxide etc to treat acne. You can apply the oil with cotton tip or fingertips a couple of times a day. You could dilute it with water too.It might work slowly but it does work.

You can mix some aloe vera gel and a few drops of tea tree oil and dab this on the acne affected area, you can fluctuate the amount of oil according to what your skin copes with.

Some people add it to bath water to treat cough, bronchial congestion, and pulmonary inflammation. My personal favorite is to add it to my facial steam sauna, hence it helps me to open up pores with the goodness of teatree oil in it.I do this every week.

Tea Tree Oil even works on insect bites, razor burn, lice, and dandruff and ear infections. It also helps to helps heal and soothe sunburns in diluted form. For razor burn, after shaving, gently swab some tea tree oil onto the affected part of your body with a cotton ball. For lice Add a small amount to shampoo to destroy head lice.

Undiluted tea tree oil may reduce  redness for skin reactions in people who are allergic to contact with nickel.

Mix a few drops with a carrier oil and apply to skin after a bath or shower. This may also help with symptoms of cold or flu.

You can add a couple of drops of this oil to a teaspoon of honey and leave it on the face for ten minutes and wash off, this will help with acne.

A small amount added to your bath can help with body odor.I like to mix tea tree oil as well as lemon juice to my bath water sometimes.

For eczema you can add a couple of drops of tea tree and double the amount of olive oil to your bath water.

You can mix a few drops of tea tree oil with some carrier oil like coconut or almond and apply this one the affected area to dilute the oil in case it stings or burns on sensitive skin.

Since it smells so strong, it works great for me as aromatherapy, considering I have allergic reactions to dust pollen and such irritants, I sometimes dab some oil to a cloth or handkerchief and smell off it to ease any nasal discomfort.

Personally, I own three bottles of tea tree oil from various sources,I have sinus issues and hence I love to add this to facial steam and also for acne issues, I like to dilute it like mentioned above and apply it. The smell could be too much sometimes and it might burn a bit too, so use the above measures to see how your skin likes it.Remember tea tree oil is never supposed to consumed, always use it topically.
