Skin Tone
So many times we buy something because we get so attracted to its color but when we get home and try it on, it just doesn’t seem to suit us. This goes for everything; from clothes and accessories to makeup etc. There are always some colors which will look much better on us compared with other colors. That’s why it is important to know one’s skin tone to enhance one’s outer beauty. Usually our skin tones – warm or cool is determined by the undertones of our skin. Then it becomes easy to mix and match colors accordingly for the best look. Most of the Indian complexions are warm unless they have light colored eyes or naturally pink cheeks or very fair/ pale skin.
Ways to find out your skin tone:-
1. Material Test
Hold two pieces of fabric cloth against your face. One cloth should be silver in color and the other in gold. Analyze which one looks better on you, silver or gold. One of those colors will brighten up your face instantly. If silver does, then you are cool toned; if golden does then you are warm toned. If both for instance look equally good against your face, you might be neutral. This could be done using a silver and gold foil too.
2. Vein Test
If the veins on your wrist look green then you have warm skin tone due to yellow undertones whereas if they appear blue you have a cool skin tone due to pink undertones.
3. Ear Test
Bend your ear forwards. You will find a small patch of skin with a little crease. That small patch will be either pink or yellow. If it’s yellow your skin is warm and if it pink it’s cool. Obviously you won’t be able to look yourself behind your ears, so you will need someone’s help.
Note: Make sure to carry them out in natural lightning, not artificial one.
Here are few colors you need to consider for your tones:-
1. For Hair Color
If you have cool tone, you should opt for blonde, black, hazel for your hair in case you ever want to color them. In case of warm, opt for shades of brown like auburn & deep red like burgundy.
2. For Accessories
Warm skin tones should go for gold finished accessories and cool tones should go for silver finished accessories.
3. For Clothing
For clothing all colors suit all tones just the shade should be right one. For example, you can see in the color wheel above warm tones should go for yellow greens where as cooler tones should go for darker greens with blue undertones like teal.
4. For Makeup
Warm tones should go for sunset kind of colors like yellows, oranges, brown, reds and the like. For eyeshadows, consider more of gold, bronze, copper, taupe etc. For lipsticks & blushes look for peaches, peachy pinks, browns, corals. Cool tones should go for jewel tone colors based on blues, pinks, purples, violets. For lipsticks & blushes look for rosy pinks, purples & blue based reds.
Anyone can try any color they like. This guideline will just help you to decide which shades will work better for you compared to others.

Hey Prerana, do blue based pinks such as Fuschia suit you as well as mochas & terracotas? Then maybe you are a neutral and just about anything would suit you 🙂

you know Neha. Tell the mac sa’s about how u find it very difficult to judge anything in the mac lightning and if u can have a tiny sample which u can try at home and outside to see if it actually suits you or not. That way you could ask ur friends and other people who can judge which shade suits you better. If the SA’s disagree you could go talk to the manager about the issue. I’m sure they won’t deny then laters. It’s all about customer service afterall!!

hello gabbar ji..aap shayad neutral honge like Cali & Shreya. The best technique to find out is try a mocha shade lipstick as it’s yellow-gold based and try fuschia since its blue based and if both suit you equally well and brighten up your face in a good way then ur neutral!!! 😀 😀

you know you could take the base of warm colors and mix the cooler colors along with it either in clothes or makeup. So it will work perfectly.

Please don´t get me wrong – there a tons of false paletts in the world wide web and it´s a question of screen calibration how they appear on screens at home as well. The “warm” palette used about holds several cool colours. Also primary red is not a warm, but a neutral colour (winter colour type palette) – and for sure Beyonce is not a warm type, but a winter colour type – that´s why she does not look that stunning in warm colours as she looks in the right colour spectrum. About 95% of so-called colour-type palettes and informations are wrong – that´s the source of lot of confusion about the topic. It got a big business with more and more “consultants” having less and less even basical informations, but good sales skills.
Furthermore the vein test is nothing relyable – I know some warm spring colour type beauties with blueish appearing veins (due to the fact of pinkish skin OVERtone) and also a lot of winter types with green apeearing veins (mostly from asia or the middle east – also comes from the skin overtone which has nothing in common with the undertone.
