Hello lovely people,
I had never heard of the brand “Sonia Kashuk” until I came to the US and started exploring the makeup brands here. Sonia Kashuk is a drugstore brand, which means it’s not a high-end cosmetics brand, and is available in regular stores unlike brands like MAC, Burberry, Christian Dior, YSL, Clinique etc. which are not available in regular departmental stores here and are certainly considered high-end luxury brands. I like lip crayons, especially for work days, and I like n*de shades mostly. Here’s a review of the Sonia Kashuk Velvety Mattle Lip Crayon in the shade “Spicy Nude.”
Creamy texture ensures an easy glide on application that will not feel dry on the lips and instantly coats with rich pigmented color. Each of the six mattes shades offer extra-long wear to keep your smile looking gorgeous! Contains fig aroma.
Too many, if you ask me!
My Experience with Sonia Kashuk Spicy Nude Velvety Matte Lip Crayon:
Like the product claims, it is indeed a great creamy lip color with a very nice pigmentation. I used a lip liner and then filled out with the Sonia Kashuk Velvety Matte Lip Crayon in Spicy Nude. It doesn’t tug on your lips and really glides on to give a smooth finish to your lips.
It is a matte formula, and since I have dry lips, I always tend to use lip balm before applying any kind of lip color. The shade can be considered as a my-lips-but-better one, with almost a natural look and slight color. If you like bold colors, then you might want to try some of the other shades from this range, like Mulberry Nude or Coral Nude, which also look tempting.
The good part about this lip crayon is that it doesn’t dry out your lips too much, which matte lipsticks tend to do over a period of time and then all the imperfections are glaringly visible. The spicy nude shade, even while faded, doesn’t highlight the dry lips, and just appears as a nice stain. It does transfer though, which is slightly irritating.
By the way, does anyone feel they are stuck between matte, drying, but much better lasting lipsticks on one side and creamy and smooth but not-so-long-lasting ones on the other? I seem to be in this valley constantly and I still haven’t found my holy grail as far as matte lipsticks are concerned! Sorry to digress, let’s get back to the review 😛
I am happy with the pigmentation of the lip crayon and the staying power. I had breakfast with this lip color on, and it only faded a little, but the color was still visible. It might not last an entire day though and you might need to touch up. This is not so much of a negative for me as my lipsticks never tend to last very long and I do touch up every 5-6 hours. Since it’s basically a nude color, it looks pretty with minimal eye makeup and is perfect for office wear.
One of the claims are about a fig aroma, which really confused me. I didn’t get any aroma, which is good because figs aren’t really my favorites and I hate sweet-smelling lipsticks.
There is also one observation that I have about the packaging. With these lip crayons, which are thick plastic pencils, you need a good sharpener to sharpen them. I have lost far too many pencils to Natraj sharpener (nostalgic feeling, remember shaving pencils with an orange sharpener). I realized, sharpeners at the stationary shops are not necessarily the best choice as far as makeup pencils are concerned, especially for the plastic ones. I invested (Yes, buying two sharpeners for 5.50 USD and 3.50 is as good as an investment) from The Body Shop (large and small pencil sharpeners), and now I am happy.
Overall, I am happy with the pigmentation, the staying power and the shade of the Sonia Kashuk Velvety Matte Lip Crayon in Spicy Nude.
I am wearing the following products for the FOTD:
- Face: Ponds BB Cream and Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser primer, and Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush in Candy Coral.
• Eyes: 2-IN-1 Smoky Gel Liner and Brow Definer in black.
• Lips: Sonia Kashuk lip liner in Rosewood and Sonia Kashuk Velvety Matte Lip Crayon in Spicy Nude.
Pros of Sonia Kashuk Spicy Nude Velvety Matte Lip Crayon:
- Amazing texture, true to the claims, the crayon glides over your lips.
- Beautiful n*de color, perfect for day wear and especially in office.
- Matte formula, but doesn’t dry your lips.
- Nice pigmentation, doesn’t fade away with light snacking.
Cons of Sonia Kashuk Spicy Nude Velvety Matte Lip Crayon:
- Staying power is moderate, doesn’t stand up to the claim of extra-long wear.
- Lack of availability in India.
Would I Repurchase/Recommend Sonia Kashuk Spicy Nude Velvety Matte Lip Crayon?
I would recommend this one, as apart from a wonderful shade, I like the fact that the velvety lip crayon doesn’t dry out my lips. It’s a beautiful shade and perfect for a professional setting. I might try different shades such as Mulberry Nude or Blossomy Nude now.
