Sun Poisoning: Causes and Cures

When I first heard the word ‘sun poisoning’ I wondered what the hell.. wasn’t sun burn bad in itself.Β  Then I realized that I really need to look around and find out what is sun poisoning actually. After all, one cannot take a risk of leaving out something like this especially when they live in a place where the temperature can go above 45 degree celsius.

Sun poisoning or photodermatitis is caused due to the overexposure of the sun. In other words sun poisoning is a severe kind of sun burn. The exact cause is unclear although the immune system is believed to play the role. In addition to the basic sunburn symptoms like redness and itching sun poisoning also includes skin blistering and peeling, fever, nausea and headache.

Types of Sun Poisoning

Following are the two types of reactions to the sunlight:

1) Polymorphous light eruption: It is the most common light-induced skin ailment. The amount of light needed to flair up this disease varies from one person to another as every individual has his own tolerance level. This disease may begin at any age. Initial symptoms include redness, burning, and itching, which generally last three-four days. Skin rashes and small bumps on the body are other severe symptoms which may take long to heal. Fatigue, chills, headache and nausea are few other immediate symptoms but will go away within few hours.

2) Solar urticaria: It is caused due to the ultraviolet radiation or in some cases due to the visible light too. Symptoms include itchiness, redness, raised areas on the skin or blisters, wheezing, dizziness and loss of consciousness.

Sun Poisoning cures

Following are the few tricks that would help in the case of severe sun burn
1) Apply cool compressions or take a shower.
2) If possible avoid the sun completely or at least completely cover the sun burned area when going outside.
3) Drink extra fluids or eat fruits rich in water content for some days.
4) Use aloe gel to calm the sunburn.
5) Do not use oily lotions on the sun burned area as they may lead to pigmentation.

In case of severe skin blisters, fever, rapid breathing or any signs of dehydration a medical help should be taken immediately.

Sun block

Sun sensitivity risk can be avoided by following the two simple sun safe practices:

1) Never ever forget to apply a sunscreen before stepping out in the sun especially if your work requires you to stay in the sun longer.
2) If possible try to avoid the sun between noon to 4 pm.
