Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush – Frisky Review

Hey everyone!

Hope you are all keeping warm and having a wonderful winter. I am so excited about the New Year. Crazy is how I would describe this past year. Not good, not bad, just plain old kuh-razy! Are you excited for 2014? I missed participating in IMBB these past few months and wanted to contribute a post before the end of the year. So, let’s get started!

Product Background and Description:

Tarte Cosmetics was founded in 1999 by Maureen Kelly, making it one of the early entrants into the natural beauty product industry. Kelly was an unlikely candidate for a makeup brand founder and CEO, as neither did she have a business background nor was she formally trained in makeup. Kelly was simply frustrated by the lack of pure and powerful cosmetics in the marketplace, and decided to drop out of the PhD in Psychology program at Columbia University she was enrolled in to start her own makeup line from her one-bedroom apartment. She set out to create products that were not only eco-chic and cruelty-free, but also super glamorous. In a little over a decade, her brand has gained iconic status in the beauty industry without spending any money on advertising. Celebrities including Julianne Moore and Carrie Underwood wear it, and it was even endorsed by Oprah. Pretty cool, right? I wanted to share Kelly’s story because it’s been tremendously inspiring to me and I hope it is to you too!

According to the company, this blush is “a long-wearing, supremely soft blush infused with Amazonian clay harvested from the banks of the Amazon River and naturally baked by the sun.” It offers a 12-hour, fade-free, flawless finish for all skin types and vivid colors that will flatter a range of skin tones. The Amazonian Clay in the blush is known to minimize oil and balance skin for oily skin types and restore moisture in dry skin with the clay’s natural hydrating properties. The shade Frisky is described as “a shimmering bright coral.”

My Experience with Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush – Frisky:

I am a big fan of Tarte’s eyeshadows and cheek stains and late last year decided to try their clay blushes. I went into Sephora and tried on a few and, instantly, fell in love with “Frisky.” The blush was super pigmented and extremely flattering on my tan skin tone. The texture is a smooth, buttery matte, with very finely milled shimmer in it. This particular shade can look a little scary in the pan. Because it’s so pigmented, there’s always the fear of looking like a clown.  I have found, though, that applying the blush with a fan brush and a light-hand is the best way. The shade shows up as a bright reddish-coral on me and the tiny golden shimmer isn’t really noticeable unless someone is standing, like, super close to your face. Because it’s so pigmented, this blush will flatter a range of skin tones. Deeper skinned gals will particularly like this one because it actually shows up on the skin. If you are lighter skinned, using a very light hand while applying is the way to go.

The packaging is extremely cute, especially the design embossed on the blush. Each blush’s plastic exterior is a different color as it matches the shade inside. I found the plastic on the top a little thin and flimsy, something I have noticed in a lot of Tarte products. I actually had the caps on my Tarte lip stains crack because the plastic was so thin. The company tries to minimize damage to the environment by using eco-friendly packaging, which is great; however, sometimes I am scared that a crack will run through my blush if I don’t handle it with the utmost care. Overall, in comparison to other brands, this blush’s packaging just isn’t sturdy enough.

The blush lives up to its promise of being long wearing. I have combination skin – oily, acne-prone in some places, dry in others – and even though I need to touch up my foundation through the day, the blush looks fresh until taken off with remover or cleanser. It doesn’t irritate my skin or break me out, which is another really big plus. The blush goes on very smooth and is extremely blendable.

I have used it on top of a range of foundation types – mineral powder, mineral liquid, liquid and cream – and it sits equally well on each. Sometimes, putting a blush on top of powder foundation can give a cakey look, but because this is so blendable, it gives a very natural finish. My cheeks aren’t super oily, so I don’t know if the clay absorbs any oil. Nor can I comment on the clay’s hydrating properties because I have never worn this by itself, it’s always on top of a lotion/primer.

Pros of Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush – Frisky:

  • Long lasting. This one doesn’t require touch-ups through the day.
  • Very pigmented and great color payoff.
  • Formulated without parabens, phthalates, sulphates, triclosan, GMOs, petrochemicals and synthetic fragrances.
  • Teeny tiny amount needed, I have barely made a dent in mine and I have had it for more than a year. Even after wearing it almost every day this summer!

Cons of Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush – Frisky:

  • Fragile packaging. It’s a good idea to hold on to the plastic covering it comes in for travelling as it will hold it in place and prevent it from breaking easily.

Bottom Line:

If you want a blush that is pigmented and long lasting, this undoubtedly should be on top of your list. The colors are vivid and show up beautifully on the skin. Frisky is one shade that’s extremely flattering on desi skin tones. The best part is that the product is free of any nasty chemicals!

IMBB Rating: 5/5.
