Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Flush Review

Hey guys!

Do you guys, like me, go through phases where you get totally obsessed with one type of beauty product? I am in a total blush phase right now. It’s the first section I rush to in any makeup store; swatching endlessly until my arms tire and my cheeks, forearms, and fingers are covered in variations of reds, pinks, and mauves. Blushes are great at mimicking a healthy flush when you’ve been short on sleep and stressed out. No wonder I’m gravitating toward them! I decided to share my thoughts on Tarte’s Flush blush, a product I reach out for often nowadays, with you today.

Product Background and Description:

Tarte Cosmetics was founded in 1999 by Maureen Kelly, making it one of the early entrants into the natural beauty product industry. Kelly was an unlikely candidate for a makeup brand founder and CEO, as she didn’t have a business background and wasn’t formally trained in makeup. Kelly was simply frustrated by the lack of pure and powerful cosmetics in the marketplace, and decided to drop out of the PhD in Psychology program at Columbia University and start her own makeup line from her one-bedroom apartment. She set out to create products that were not only eco-chic and cruelty-free, but also super glamorous. In a little over a decade her brand has gained iconic status in the beauty industry without spending any money on advertising. Celebrities including Julianne Moore and Carrie Underwood wear it, and it was even endorsed by Oprah. Pretty cool, right? I wanted to share Kelly’s story because it’s been tremendously inspiring to me and I hope it is to you too!

According to the company this blush is “a long-wearing, supremely soft blush infused with Amazonian clay harvested from the banks of the Amazon River and naturally baked by the sun.” It offers a 12-hour, fade-free, flawless finish for all skin types and vivid colors that will flatter a range of skin tones. The Amazonian Clay in the blush is known to minimize oil and balance skin for oily skin types and restore moisture in dry skin with the clay’s natural hydrating properties. The shade Flush is described as “a pinkish berry.”

My Experience with Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Flush:

This particular shade was suggested to me by an SA at Sephora. The bright fuchsia isn’t something I’d usually be drawn to. You see, the color looks very bright and scary in the pan. It immediately brings thoughts of the dreaded “clown face” that too many women have fallen victim to, due to their overzealous relationship with blush. However, the SA was quick to assuage any fears I had, and told me the color would look great on my tan skin. I was flattered, but not completely sold on it yet. Some might call my taste gaudy, but I like glittery, shimmery stuff. There was no way I was going to buy a matte blush! The SA, sensing that flattering me with words wasn’t enough, offered to apply it on my cheeks. Okay, so there’s a reason you’re reading this review today – I loved it! Now that I’ve owned it for a while, let me delve a little more into why I love it so much.

This shade is deeply pigmented, gives great color pay-off, and will flatter a range of skin tones. Deeper toned gals will particularly like this one because it actually shows up on the skin. I’ve struggled with this myself, especially with drugstore brands with poor payoff. You may completely love a color in the pan but looks completely dull, if it shows up that is, when applied! If you’re lighter skinned, using a very light hand while applying or layering your foundation or powder on top of it is the way to go. I usually like wearing this blush on the apple of my cheeks for a youthful glow. For night time, I sometimes put a little bit of highlighter on the very top of my cheeks for a nice glow. I’ve used it with a range of brushes – fan, stippling, blush, and powder ones – and the finish it always flawless. My favorite way to apply it is with a fan brush, because it is so pigmented.

This blush is very long wearing. I’ve been using powder mineral foundation lately, and it’s totally fascinating how even though the powder wears off from my face, this stays! It looks freshly applied throughout the day, which is great considering I have combination skin that tends to get oily pretty fast. This does not clog my pores or break me out, which is another major plus. Because the blush is very finely milled, it goes on smoothly on the skin and is extremely blendable. You can build on the finish; but you only need one teeny swipe of the product to get perfectly pink-berry cheeks (unless you’re playing a clown; in that case disregard the one-swipe suggestion!). This doesn’t settle into pores or makes them look more prominent either. Overall, you can expect a rich, matte, smooth finish from the blush that lasts the whole day.

The blush’s packaging is extremely cute, especially the design embossed on the blush. Each Tarte blush’s plastic exterior is a different color, as it corresponds with the shade inside. My one gripe with Tarte’s packaging is that it’s often flimsy. I found the plastic on the top a little thin. I’ve had the caps on my Tarte Lip Stains crack because the plastic was so thin. I understand the company tries to minimize damage to the environment by using eco-friendly packaging. That’s great. However, sometimes I’m scared that a crack will run through my blush if I don’t handle it with the utmost care.

The best thing about the blush is that it’s free of a lot of nasty chemicals. Until recently, it had been very difficult to find products that were good for you, for example by being paraben-free, and worked very well too. A lot of big companies just didn’t pay attention to that aspect of makeup production. It’s really amazing how today many are actually taking initiative to minimize harmful chemicals in makeup and producing high-quality products simultaneously. This is a wonderful blush on its own. Because not only does it look good on me, but is also good for me; this definitely makes it one of my favorites.
