Tarte Amazonian Clay BB Illuminating Moisturizer Review

I always say I love BB Creams endlessly. They make one half of my daily makeup; BB Cream and a lip color is all I wear. Tarte’s Amazonian Clay Blushes need no introduction in the beauty world. I haven’t met a woman ever who doesn’t love them.

Tarte Amazonian Clay BB Illuminating Moisturizer Review

My Experience with Tarte Amazonian Clay BB Illuminating Moisturizer:

I have got the lightest shade from the five available shades called Light Sand. I am an NC-30, oily-combination skin and suffer hyper-pigmentation and uneven skin tone.

Packaging: Tarte Amazonian Clay BB Illuminating Moisturizer comes in a clay coloured(beige) plastic squeezable tube with a nozzle to dispense the product. I was very happy to see that the tube was sealed with easy to remove aluminium foil. It also ensured that the product inside the tube was not tempered. It’s lightweight, screw cap closes tight and easily sneaks into the purse. However, the nozzle dispenses slightly more amount of moisturizer than required.

Consistency, Blendability & Texture: Tarte Amazonian Clay BB Illuminating Moisturizer has ideal consistency; neither thick nor watery/runny. It’s soft and sheer. The texture is on the creamy side, but I will precisely call it hydrating rather than moisturizing. The moisturizer feels silky smooth on the skin, it is very easy to blend and gets absorbed into the skin within a minute. It has no fragrance.

Shade, Coverage & Finish: There are five shades available – Light Sand, Light Neutral, Medium Tan Honey, Deep Tan Honey & Rich Honey. This means, a fairly good range to choose from according to your skin tone. But, the coverage is really too sheer or I would conclude it has nearly no coverage at all. You will always need a concealer underneath and for those facing hyper-pigmentation issues like me or blemishes should better wear it over a foundation just for the dewy finish.

Tarte Amazonian Clay BB Illuminating Moisturizer Review

The main function of the product is to provide luminosity and dewy finish. I feel they have added just an allusion of tint only to provide the slightest coverage possible. In direct sunlight, it gives out an evident luminous effect; while indoors, just a dewy finish is visible.

Even the packaging isn’t matte and the plastic tube has minute shimmers to compliment the product’s finish.

Longevity, Transferability & Skin Compatibility: Because of the fact that it gives dewy finish, this might not come out as the most favourite moisturizer for oily-combination skins in summer. Those with oily-combination skin are blessed during winter, to enjoy foundations, makeup and every type of moisturizers. That’s what I do these days. I think this will convert me into oil can in summer (a sure skip, then).

I haven’t experienced any clogged pores or breakouts. It doesn’t crease and the finish lasts all day long; say 8 hours minimum wear time. There aren’t any transferability issues with the product. The best utilization of Tarte Amazonian Clay BB Illuminating Moisturizer, in my opinion, is to wear it over a matte foundation in winters for a dewy look and you will love it. Let’s sum it up.

Tarte Amazonian Clay BB Illuminating Moisturizer Review

Pros of Tarte Amazonian Clay BB Illuminating Moisturizer:

• Sheer coverage with a trace of tint.
• Brightens complexion.
• Gives dewy finish & luminosity to face.
• Best to be worn over a matte foundation.
• Infused with Amazonian Clay benefits.
• Provides sufficient hydration to skin.
• Light weight with no fragrance.
• Consistency is ideal with easy blending & fast absorption.
• No brush required for application.
• Formulated without Phthalates.
• Dermatologically tested and vegan-friendly.

Cons of Tarte Amazonian Clay BB Illuminating Moisturizer:

• Claims of “A waterproof and 12-hour, full-coverage weightless powder foundation” are totally false!
• No SPF at all.
• Requires a concealer or precisely, a separate foundation underneath until and unless you have a crystal clear even skin tone.
• The finish won’t prove to be ideal for combination-oily skin in summer.
• Expensive for what it does.

IMBB Rating:

3.5/5

Would I Repurchase/Recommend Tarte Amazonian Clay BB Illuminating Moisturizer?

This is a luxury product, not a must have in your stash. If I talk about Asian skins, we need a bit of coverage and a hint of color to brighten up the look. So, this isn’t for me, actually. I can look for better BB Creams and CC Creams at this price tag. You can skip this if you want to.

Have a nice day, stay blessed.

    1. Thank you for putting me up Jomol, but why off BB creams….Me too love foundation but my skin settles with very few actually without giving a heavy type look..

  1. Thank you for the review, Sumera. I had a lot of expectations from this product. But after reading your review, I think I will give this one a miss

  2. i have used an amazing tinted moisturiser from tarte and I adored it to the T. sad this one did not live up to the expectations so much! loved the review 🙂

    1. Yes Rati ma’am, i read it before making a purchase but this one is entirely different, i think it’s to add in foundation for luminous effect and bright look with dewy finish, only!

  3. Loved the review Sumera and the illuminating effect is also good.. but what’s the point if it has no coverage? 🙁

    1. Exactly shikha, dewy finish looks amazing in winters, who likes dead matte face slathered with foundation! 😛 but seriously, i think one will need to put on 5 ml out of 50 for sheer coverage and then ultimately look like a disco ball in sunlight 😀

    1. With writers like Arpita Mitra around, i need to improve on reviews na Doc hehe…Thankoo <3 and me khud haul le k ajaoengi, wanna see Siliguri 🙂

  4. Thank you for the review and pictures esp the swatch under the sun. Based on your review though, I assume you expected it to function or appear as a BB cream because it has the word “BB” on the title. However, it clearly says its an illuminating moisturizer, not a Tinted Moisturizer which is equivalent to a BB cream here in the western world. Therefore, being a moisturizer only, it definitely has to be clear and transparent, or translucent at the most. Anyway, I believe this is for those who want to add dewy or luminous effect AFTER they apply their BB cream or a foundation and this trick is very popular among Asian women.

  5. Also, another correction to your review. It has SPF 15 according to its website. This product is more likely to be an illuminator rather than a tinted moisturizer or a BB cream.
