1. Brush your teeth twice a day

If you can spare the time and have patience, one can even brush after every meal but just do not do it aggressively. For those who are thinking brushing teeth is no rocket science, think again. Many people are not aware of proper brushing technique. Please take time to read the proper method of brushing and avoid to and fro movement and instead use circular motion and spend at least 3 minutes to brush your teeth.

2. Flossing

Very few people floss in India. This was an alien culture in India until a few years back. Again you can read the proper method and floss at least once a day preferably at bedtime. Flossing regularly can prevent periodontal diseases or gum diseases.

3. Tongue cleaning

If you do it aggressively, you can damage at least 1000s of those taste buds but do not worry one has close to 10,000 tastebuds. Do you know different part of the tongue is responsible for different taste. Have a look at the picture to have an idea. Have you at any time drank very hot coffee and burnt your tongue or rather damaged your taste buds. It will take some days for the taste buds to heal.

4. Professional Cleanup

If you are not too sure of your brushing ability, one can get professional cleanup done every 6 months to 1 year depending on your oral health. It is advised to visit your dentist every 6 months to identify any caries in their initial stage and save the teeth in the future. We even suggest dental visit for a 6-month-old baby or as soon as the milk teeth erupts again to prevent decay.

5.Avoid Caffeine Alcohol, etc.

Do you want white sparkling teeth, avoid drinking tea or coffee, tobacco, smoking, etc, and even some medications cause stains on teeth, and if flouride content is high in your water, you may have fluorosis. Treatment is available for this both in-office bleaching and at home bleaching.

6.Toothbrush

Change your brush every 3 months or as soon as it wears off. We even suggest to change brush after one recovers from cold. Soft bristled brush is recommended. One can even use electronic brush available in the market.

7. Mouthrinse

Many available in the market and clinically proven to help. Use it after brushing or even after having a meal to minimize dental caries or to smell good.

8.Chewing Gums

One can even chew gum and if you are calorie conscious, sugarless gums are available. Chewing gum increases saliva flow which in turn aids in preventing caries to an extent.

Many people have dental fear but the fear must have begun only after a traumatic experience. Example, bad experience with an inconsiderate dentist, painful dental treatment, smell of hospital, sound of dental instruments, peer influence, etc.

Just looking for a good dentist right now..just very scared that this time I would end up with no teeth at all. :((

    Very nice tips, sarita. πŸ™‚

    1. Did u go to an orthodontist because they are specialized only in these sort of treatments though a regular BDS will do braces but the outcome does not always turn out good. I will do an article in the future about different specialities. There are a lot of quacks nowadays…

    2. Hey same’s with me rati!
I had braces when i was in school, and now my teeth are very weak..
will you please tell me some tips?
because I’m really scared when it comes to my teeth, i feel its weak in this age then what will happen when I grow old!!! :yikes:

    1. May be u were very enthusiastic at first…go slow until u get hold of the technique but again there may be different reasons for gum bleeding.

  7. Really nice article.
I try to floss but sometimes i feel too lazy. But i actually like flossing πŸ˜› πŸ˜›
Can you tell me when you must dispose your floss (like you must dispose off toothbrushes after 3 months)? Or is there no expiry date?
And also, are flavoured floss okay to use ? Cuz i’ve been using a mint flavoured one, but now i’m wondering if its okay ?

    1. I am confused by ur question actually. U pull out desired length of the floss from the dispenser and use it and dispose. May be u r using floss picks?

      1. err…I think she is asking like suppose you bought a floss roll…and you are not able to finish the whole thing by the end of 3rd month then should you dispose off the remaining floss? Is it ok to continue using the floss role till it gets over, even if it takes around a year to get over. Basically, she (and now I) want to know if there is any prescribed time by which you should use a particular floss after the date of its packaging (I need to check now, if my floss has an expiry date) :-/ :-/ :-/

  8. hi sarita………
    i m based in noida…….near delhi……..running three clinics…….along with my husband…… πŸ˜›

    1. wow..great….me not working presently, busy 24 x 7 with my little daughter, vl have to plan something after i have a second one..hehe

  9. As an Ayurvedic doc i would like to add that dont use sweet tasting toothpastes, try using bitter, salty or astringent. The taste is not so good but you will surely maintain the dental health. Sweet toothpaste just do a lot of harm to teeths and decays teeth.

  10. wow, its so pretty that IIMB covers so many topics under one roof……well i wanted to read more blogs on nail care, cuticle care and reviews on such products like hand cremes and all….

And thanks sarita for all the information, and even i wana know does a floss have an expiry date? like i bought a colgate floss a year back, but never flossed as i was too bored to go over each teeth evryday + the time it takes….but after this blog i think m goin to start flossin again..but i need to know if i can still use that colgate floss i bought a year ago?

    1. Don’t worry Vinisha, in a few months we shall even be covering topics such as “10 ways to extract money from your husband for your makeup haul,” “20 fun ways to irritate your saasu maan,” “how to get a date with Ranbeer Kapoor” etc…

  11. Sorry to confuse you Sarita, read Cali’s explanation, thats exactly what i meant.

    Sarita, i have 2 questions –

    1. As a dentist , would you say flavourless floss is better than flavoured one, or do they both safe to use ??

    2. The floss dabba has a reeeeeally long thread of floss. I have had my dabba for over a year, sometimes i doubt whether its usable. I wanted to ask if the floss dabba has an expiration date? Like cali said, if the dabba doesn’t get over in say 6 months, should u throw the remaining floss away ?
