How To Tell If You Have Cool Or Warm Skin Undertones

Hi everyone, Knowing the undertone of our skin can play an important role in helping us choose the most flattering shades of makeup, clothing and jewellery. In this post, I will tell you some quick and easy ways in which you can determine the undertone of your skin. Skin undertones can broadly be classified as warm, cool and neutral. Let’s take a look at some easy ways to find out whether you have warm or cool skin undertones.

Cool and warm undertones

1. Check the colour of your veins: This is one of the most common and the quickest ways to find out the undertone of your skin. Check the colour of your veins on the inside of your wrist. If the veins appear more greenish (than blue) in colour, then you have a warm undertone, while if they appear more bluish (than green), then you have a cool undertone to your skin.

2. Gold vs. silver jewellery: Another easy to find out the undertone of your skin is to try out pieces of gold and silver jewellery one after the other. If you find that gold-toned jewellery flatters you more and blends better with your skin tone, then you’re likely to be a warm-toned complexion. If silver jewellery looks better on you, then you are a cool toned complexion.

3. The neutral colour test: There are many types of colours in the neutral segment, and identifying which family of neutrals looks best on you will help you figure out the undertone of your skin. If you look better in stark whites and blacks, then you’re probably cool toned, whereas if tans and browns are your type of neutrals, then you’re probably warm toned in complexion.

4. Colours of clothing: Those with cool toned skin look better in jewel-toned colours of clothing like blues, purples and emerald greens, whereas those with warm toned skin look better in more earthy tones like red, orange, yellow and olive green.

5. White sheet of paper test: Hold a plain white sheet of paper against your arm. If your skin appears yellowish against the white sheet, then you have a warm undertone to your skin. If the skin appears more pinkish in hue, then you have a cool undertone to your skin.

6. Burning vs. tanning: The effects that the sun has on your skin can help you determine the undertone of your skin. For instance, if you tend to get sunburn-like effects on your skin when you spend too much time in the sun, then you’re likely to be cool toned. Those who tend to get tanned when out in the sun are more likely to be warm toned in complexion.

7. The colour of your eyes and hair: Finally, checking the colour of your hair and eyes can help determine the undertone of your skin. Those with cool toned skin tend to have blue, grey or green eyes with blonde, brown, or black hair with silvery tones. Those with warm undertones tend to have brown, amber or hazel eyes with deep brown or chocolate black hair with a golden hue.
