Break Out The Hives – Save the Bees

Albert Einstein is credited as saying: “If honey bees become extinct, human society will follow in four years”.
The honeybee is under serious threat, but naturally this range only uses honey and beeswax from traditional hives – these hives continue to flourish when the honey has been collected.

DID YOU KNOW?

About the Honey and Beeswax used in new Honey Bronze
The team at The Body Shop searched long and hard to find honey and beeswax hives and suppliers meeting the objectives of the unique Community Fair Trade programme.

Peter Stedman, from the Community Fair Trade team, says:
“I’ve spent time with our suppliers in Ethiopia and Cameroon, visited the hives, seen the bees in action – and frankly developed something of a passion for the honey bee. These creatures are truly amazing, and I’m thrilled that now in the UK our office has hives maintained by employees. Sadly the opportunity to get up close and personal with the honey bee is under serious threat in many parts of the world – however our suppliers epitomise best practice, using traditional methods to help sustain the natural habitat of the bees”.

Want to know what you can do to help save the bees?

1. Buy fruit and vegetables from stores selling local produce. This encourages and supports local farmers.
2. Cultivate a small garden, growing native plants to make it bee-friendly.
3. Avoid the use of pesticides.
4. Avoid seeds coated in systematic insecticides. These can cause the entire plant to become toxic to bees that may try to feed on it.
5. Resist the temptation to tear up all your weeds. Instead let them grow – especially clover and dandelion.
6. Create a buzz – help raise awareness of the plight of the bee, by telling friends and family how they can help save the bees.
7. Buy honey that is sourced from beekeepers that don’t kill the bees at the end of each season.
8. Take up beekeeping. It’s a rewarding hobby, and it’s not just for people living in the countryside.
9. Don’t kill the bees! If your garden is attracting swarms of bees, that’s great news. If you are concerned they might sting, contact your local beekeeping association.

  5. Good post Rati :waytogo: .. Honey has a low calorie level and when compared with the same amount of sugar, it gives 40% less calories to the body. It gives energy, does not add weight and its health benefits are many. Infact, the Koran and Bible also talks of honey :jaiho: . The Jews advocated honey as a producer of wit and intellect; it was supposed to make one ‘mentally keen’. I am reading this book on drinks good for body and skin and coincidentally, I got one recipe of honey yesterday itself, it is called spiced honey drink, it can be included in our daily life, it is esp for those who could not take lemon and honey plain, as the lemon-honey mixture tend to infect the throat for some people or even to some cause constipation.

  6. Here goes the recipe:

    SPICED HONEY DRINK
    Ingredients:
    1 ltr water
    2 cups apple juice
    2 cups orange juice
    3/4 cup lemon juice
    1 cup honey
    2 cinnamon sticks
    6 whole cloves
    2 Star anise

    Method:
Combine everything, except lemon juice in a saucepan. Heat through but do not boil and simmer for 30 minutes so the spices infuse the liquid. Strain. Serve hot or chilled depending on the weather.

  7. yummy recipes 😀
