The Body Shop Lip and Cheek Velvet Stick in Poppy Red Review

Hello all,

The Body Shop has released its new “The Body Shop Lip and Cheek Velvet Stick” range as part of their Spring 2015 collection. With this product, Body Shop has married two trends – 2-in-1 lip and cheek products and lip crayons.

These poppy-themed velvet sticks are suitable both for lips and cheeks and are available in 5 colors:

  • Nude.
  • Pink.
  • Bronze.
  • Coral.
  • Red.

There is also one universal shade which is supposed to transform on your lips based on the unique pH of your skin. I have the Clinique Black Honey lipstick (reviewed here) which claims to do something similar and I am not too impressed by that hence decided to skip the universal shade. I swatched the other shades, and found “Poppy Red” to be most suiting my skin tone and hence I picked it up. Read on further to find out more about it.

My Experience with The Body Shop Lip and Cheek Velvet Stick in Poppy Red:

Packaging: This product comes in a sturdy chubby stick packaging with a red poppy flower imagery. The color of the poppy flower and the bottom portion of the packaging matches the color of the stick which helps telling the sticks apart if you have more than one of them in your collection. The cap shuts tight and there is no risk of the cap coming off when you are traveling with it. The product has a retractable mechanism and no sharpening is needed.

A little comparison here: I found this stick to be a little too chubby compared to the Revlon Colorburst Matte Balms (see picture) and that makes applying it on the cupid’s bow and corners of the lips a little difficult as compared to the Revlon balms. But of course, we all use lipsticks on a regular basis; so this should not be an issue.

Shade: 40-Poppy Red is a beautiful raspberry shade. It looks lovely on the lips and brightens up the face. It gives a slight flush on the cheeks and does not look painted or over the top.  For some reason, only the shade number is printed on the tube. The shade name appears on the plastic packaging which we are obviously going to discard.

Fragrance: The velvet stick has a very mild floral fragrance. You get a whiff of it when you first apply the product, but it is barely discernible after that.

Texture, Finish, Pigmentation:  On the lips, this product simply glides on the lips and Body Shop is surely not making any false claims when they call it “Velvet Stick.” It seemed a bit sheer on the first application. However, a second coat made it fairly pigmented. Happy to note that layering does not make the application patchy or cakey.

It feels quite moisturizing and it definitely does not dry out my lips. The finish is somewhere in between – it seems like a matte with a lit bit of shine.

The staying power is amazing – it stays on for 6-7 hours and survives light meals and snacking. It is not completely transfer-proof, but it does not fade away completely, and leaves behind a natural looking stain. Love!

On the cheeks, the crayon is easy to apply as a blush, but you need to blend it out quickly to achieve an even application or else it starts staining. I like that it appears as a natural flush and nothing too visible or prominent. You can surely build on the color if you want to. It does not turn greasy or oily after a while. The blush fades away after 4-5 hours.

Personally, I am not very comfortable using cream blushes and prefer a powder blush. Hence, I am going to use this crayon mostly on my lips. But it is a good two-in-one product to have in your purse in times of emergencies 🙂
