Hi my beauties,

How are you all doing? We all love reading and looking up all things related to fashion. However, at times, we get intrigued by some of the terms the fashion fraternity loves using. But fret not, because I have come up with a comprehensive list of all the essential words that should be included in your fashion vocabulary, and today we shall start with necklines. Finding the perfect neckline can make or break your outfit, therefore it is absolutely essential that you quickly brush up your neckline vocabulary skills.

The Complete Guide to Necklines

Sweetheart neck

Just as the name suggests, the sweetheart neckline on a dress or a blouse is a neckline that is low at the front and is shaped like the top of a heart. It makes the perfect neckline for wedding or prom dresses, or generally when you are looking to attain that feminine, flirty ‘sweetheart’ look.

Scoop neck

scoop neckline

A scoop neck is a rounded neckline that dips down to reveal some part of the upper chest. It is the perfect neckline to show off those sexy collar-bones. However, if you are heavy chested, make sure that you go for smaller scoops to balance out the rest of your body. Pair it with a statement neckpiece and you are good to go.

Straight across neckline

Straight across neckline

This neckline is a strapless, tube style neckline which runs straight across the neck region. A popular choice in party dresses, this is an ideal pick for all those of you who want to flaunt those collar bones. However if you have little or no definition in your neck region, steer clear of this style and go for the sweetheart neckline instead.

V-neck

v neckline

A concept we are all familiar with, the v-neck is the versatile neckline where the neck is shaped like the top of a v. This is a neckline that flatters almost all body types and looks fabulous in all kinds of outfits starting from tees to bridal gowns. It elongates your neck and makes you look taller and thinner.

Off-the-shoulder

off the shoulder neckline

In this neckline, the sleeves or the straps drop laterally across the shoulder in a soft and graceful manner. It is an obvious pick if you want to show off those chiseled shoulders and also if you want to hide that extra arm flab. This neckline should definitely be your pick for all those times when you want to wear all your stunning neckpieces as it will showcase them beautifully.

Bateau neck

Bateau neck

A bateau neckline is a wide neckline that runs horizontally, front and back almost till the shoulder points and across the collarbone. A very common neckline in sweaters and knitted wear, it is one of the most elegant necklines one can flaunt. It provides a perfect canvas for your long necklaces or chains. However people with heavier arms should avoid this neckline as it draws too much focus towards your arms.

Jewel neckline

Jewel neckline

Jewel neckline is a plain rounded neckline that lies just above the collarbone. The speciality of this neckline is that it makes any necklace or pendant that you wear, visible and hence it has been named the jewel neckline. This neckline looks best in elegant evening dresses and cocktail gowns.

Square neckline

square neckline

Square neckline is a very common neckline with two linearly cut out edges forming 90 degree rounded corners. The square neckline is commonly seen in blouses, tops as well as salwar suits. It’s a very flattering neckline as it fills out the bust region giving a fuller appearance. It also provides ample space to don those beautiful necklaces with panache.

Halter neckline

The halter neckline is a neckline that is formed by the dress straps that get linked behind the neck. It is an extremely smart and fashionable neckline that can turn heads wherever you go. The perfect way to amp up the sexy quotient in a saree is to wear it with a halter neck blouse as our Bolly hotties have been doing through the ages. A nice pair of earrings and your hair done up
is what you need to complete the look.

High neck

High neck

A neckline that partially covers the neck and covers your chest completely is known as a high neck. When the neck is high and folded, it is also known as the turtle neck. It is very common in sweaters and knitwear as it blocks out the cold. It also gives an elongated appearance if there is a gap between the neck and the face.

Sabrina neck

sabrina neckline

It is a neckline that is similar to the bateau, but it goes from one shoulder to the other with a straight line that passes above the clavicles, leaving part of the shoulders bare. Looks good on people with sharp shoulder blades and defined neck region.

Spaghetti strap

Spaghetti strap

A neckline that leaves the shoulders bare and has very tiny and thin straps which remind you of spaghetti is known as spaghetti strap neckline. Again, a beautiful neckline to showcase jewellery and chiselled collar bones and shoulder blades, this neckline is best accentuated with hair let down in loose curls.

Asymmetrical neckline

Asymmetrical neckline

The asymmetrical neckline is also known as the “cleavage diana’ or one shoulder neckline is presented by a bodice with single shoulder strap and a diagonal cut. Lingerie plays the key here, as you don’t want to spoil your beautiful one shoulder evening dress with transparent straps showing on the shoulder which was to be left bare. This neckline is best accessorised with earrings and hair done up.

Queen Anne neckline

Queen Anne neckline

This neckline has a collar getting up at the back of the neck and a V neckline of varying depth. The shoulders are covered here. This was a very common neckline in old world gowns and dresses. It makes an impressive neckline for wedding trousseau and would accentuate any figure perfectly.

Illusion neckline

Illusion neckline

It uses two different fabrics to create an optical illusion. The covering bodice ends with a cut right on or above the chest, which is joined by a transparent fabric or a lace to cover the sternum to the neck. It makes for a very striking and feminine neckline especially if one goes for lace. One must avoid neckpieces with this trend and go for stunning earrings instead.

The Greek neckline

The Greek neckline

The Grecian or Greek neckline is characterised by a piece of fabric which, starting at the centre of the chest, opens to surround the neck. A slightly uncommon neckline, this is best for your formal evening wear in solid colours as it will flatter your neck and bring attention to the cut rather than the print in your outfit.

The cowl neck

cowl neckline

This neckline has the neck draped with a fabric that softly falls to the centre of the chest. A very feminine neckline, this looks good in both tops as well as dresses. Again, you can avoid overcrowding the neck region by either wearing a very small pendant or leaving the neck bare and focussing on the ears instead.
