The Golden Globes 2015 In Its Fashionable Glory

Hurray!

Finally, the 72nd Annual Golden Globes happened this year! Did you guys get to watch it? I did! My dream has always been to sweep the red carpet in a gorgeous designer gown one day but, I guess for that I ought to do something substantial in my life and errrr…that ain’t happening for now.

So, I guess I will compensate by drooling over some of the fabulous looks the GGA 2015 brought us. As always, there are some celebrities who get it wrong and yes, my heart aches for them as they become the butt of ridicule for the rest of the year as well as hot targets of the fashion police. But, hats off to those who shone this year and kick started trends for the whole world to follow.

The Golden Globes 2015 In Its Fashionable Glory

Started in 1961, the annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Beverly Hills, CA this time. Although they say one should really look forward to the Oscars, but the GGA is the first mega glitz and glamour event of the year and one hell of a reason for all fashionista’s to get glued to their TV sets.

Whilst the Oscars honour cinematic achievements, the Golden Globes recognizes excellence in motion pictures as well as television on one platform so you get to feast your eyes upon your film stars and TV stars. With such talented and hilarious hosts like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, I was all set for some extremely hysterical moments but unfortunately, despite being humourous, the tone for the rest of the ceremony became a bit monotonous. Sadly, these two somewhat feminist and outwardly smart ladies won’t be hosting the GGA anymore after completing 3 years in a row and for those of us who love them for their wit, humour and sarcasm, will surely miss them. I know I will!

Now, when we think of an awards ceremony of this stature, we’re supposed to be talking about the serials and movies that got nominated and won awards. We’re also supposed to be focusing on the sheer merit that comes with film and television. However, while that remains to be the palpable reason why they host the GGA in the first place, you can’t but deny the Hollywood fashion trends that become the talk of the town.

In addition to that, since it’s hosted in the beginning of the year, everyone has their eyes set on the hits (not to forget the misses) of the year. We saw a lot of plunging necklines (Ahem…ahem…recall JLo’s gown), stunning jewellery that scintillated on the stars, luxurious fabrics, beautifully coiffured hair, flawless makeup, envious shoes (although most of the shoes get hidden by the floor-sweeping gowns) and of course the men (how can we leave them out although I must admit 98% of the credit goes to the women for stealing the show).

So, my only word of advice to those who get to attend it is ‘please ensure you do whatever it takes to put your look together from head to toe, and bend backwards if you have to as the entire planet is watching you for God’s sake!’

Let’s see some of the trends this year and the not-so trendy:

1. Top Outfit Picks:

The Golden Globes 2015 In Its Fashionable Glory

Here are some of my personal favourites that I just loved. You may be in agreement with me or not but, I wanted to share and the reasons why. So let’s start with a favourite actress of mine as I think she’s just so funny in real life too: Emma Stone. This red-haired lass wore a Lanvin jumpsuit with sequined detailing on the bustier and plain black for the pants section. I loved this look because a jumpsuit is unconventional for such prestigious ceremonies but the gorgeous trailing bow made this every bit red carpet worthy. She teamed this with Christian Louboutin’s iconic black Pigalle shoes which again are a hot fav of mine. Simple, chic and so Emma. I want those Pigalles girl!

Next in line for me is Katherine Heigl who wore a smoldering Zac Posen navy blue gown. I love dark blues. The gown was plain navy but the cut was just fabulous and hugged her at the right curves. I just adored how her hair was curled and left open whilst her figure and outfit did most of the talking.

Another red head who stole the show was Emily Blunt looking so ethereal in her white Micheal Kors gown, silver Judith Leiber clutch and Nicholas Kirkwood shoes. The gown had a beautiful neckline and was simple but, gracefully cut and almost Grecian style. She paired this white wonder with mesmerizing turquoise earrings from Lorraine Scharwtz. I just loved the simplicity and that updo hairstyle that complimented her look.

The Welsh beauty, Catherine Zeta-Jones, wore a magnificent red Angel Sanchez gown with H. Stern jewellery. I personally adore puffy gowns as they are more Cinderella-ish and she wore this with élan. Her hair was left open but neatly tucked behind her ears to show off her jewellery.

2. The Oh-So-Bottom-Less Neckline:

JLo took the plunging neckline seriously (when does she not, I ask myself) and looked like the diva of divas in that nude Zuhair Murad gown with a fitted cape-like feature and paired it with big hair, smokey eyes and nude lips.

Kate Hudson wore a white gown by Versace with cutaway detailing on the sides and a very deep neckline too.

Jessica Chastain dressed in a bronze Versace halter gown that also featured a plunging neckline and carried it off extremely well. Her red hair gave the perfect contrast to the bronze hue of the outfit.

Boho chic Sienna Miller donned a pretty floral plunging neckline gown which had some embroidered detailing on the neckline and looked dainty whilst sporting her cropped hairstyle.

3. Who wears the pants!

The Golden Globes 2015 In Its Fashionable Glory

Two people really stood out because they chose to opt for jumpsuit/pants as opposed to the typical gowns and both Emma Stone and Lorde rocked this style with effortless panache.

Emma is my hot fav but I do like Lorde’s Narciso Rodriguez suit as well teamed with that priceless Neil Lane necklace adding the right amount of bling. Personally I would have opted for a more fitted blazer but I’m sure Narciso knows what he’s doing!

Another lady, whom we may not be very familiar with, is Patti Smith: American singer-songwriter, poet and visual artist. With her background and age she totally did justice to her suit paired with boots. I would not have expected her all dressy and girlie.

4. Yellow Yellow Dirty Fellow!

The Golden Globes 2015 In Its Fashionable Glory

Yellow was seen to rock the red carpet this year and celebrities chose a wide spectrum of yellows and looked uber chic. As this is a favourite colour of Naomi Watts, she recreated her fondness for yellow in a Gucci gown this year paired with bold red lips, which looks great with yellow somehow, and a stunning neckpiece.

Jenna Dewan (wife of hunk Channing Tatum…drool drool drool) looked fairly-like in a Carolina Herrera buttery yellow gown.

Elletra Weidemann and Lesli Mann both sported different shades of yellow with utmost grace in Giulietta and Kaufmanfranco gowns respectively.

5. I’m Blue Da Ba Dee Da Ba Die!!

The Golden Globes 2015 In Its Fashionable Glory

I’ve already selected a blue gown in my personal favs section but there were more blues to be seen that day. Different hues of blue suggest that this is one colour to look out for this year, be it navys, pastels or royal blues etc. Some gorgeous blues to be noticed were definitely Cindy Crawford’s Versace stunner (seems like she’s getting younger by the day), Julia Goldani Telles in her exquisite jewel toned blue Oscar De La Renta gown, host Amy Poehler in a long-sleeve royal blue Stella McCartney gown and Nancy O’dell in her one shoulder cerulean blue gown (have no clue who designed it though).

6. When In Doubt Wear Red!

The Golden Globes 2015 In Its Fashionable Glory

Red, definitely was a most sought after hue this year. Some of the ladies who graced this bold colour were: Allison Williams who donned a shimmery ruby Armani Prive off-shoulder gown and did the retro Hollywood waves for her hair, Taylor Schilling wore a halter neck Ralph Lauren puffy gown with a matching clutch and Viola Davis stunned everyone in a red strapless Donna Karan Atelier gown. Heidi Klum at 41 was a goddess in a red one-shoulder Versace gown. Many others went the red way too.

7. Heavy Metal Fan (of Clothes)!

Golden Globe awards 2015

Metallics seemed to have taken a big step forward this year. I just love metallic on clothes as you can either wear such sparkly numbers on their own or sober them down by pairing with matte fabrics. However, such a red carpet extravaganza surely calls for full on metallic and some show stealers were: Reese Witherspoon in a Calvin Klein off-shoulder gown with her hair on one side, Diane Kruger in her silver Emilia Wickstead gown. Julianne Moore opted for a sequined and feathery Givenchy number while Dakota Johnson sported a ravishing Fifty Shades of Grey inspired sparkly silver Chanel couture gown and I soooo loved this.

8. Blushing in Pink!

The Golden Globes 2015 In Its Fashionable Glory

Beautiful rosy pale pinks adorned the carpets too with many designs, textures and shades. Some celebrities who perfected these soft but elegant gowns were: Greer Grammer who wore a very pretty blushing pink net Lorena Sarbu gown dotted with gold sequins, wife of Matthew McConaughey, Camila Alves, wore a baby pink Monique Lhuillier strapless gown, actress and sister of Jake Gyllenhaal, Maggie Gyllenhaal wore a rose pink satin strapless Miu Miu, and Anna Kendrick looked like a princess in her beaded tulle Monique Lhuillier number. With Anna’s hair tied in a bun, it gave that fairytale-esque and somewhat ballerina look which I admired!

9. Plum Plum Wine!

The Golden Globes 2015 In Its Fashionable Glory

When reds did the rounds this year in full zeal, the plums and the wines were not too far behind. Some striking plummy wine outfits that rocked the carpet were the lovely Katie Holmes in a rich plum almost eggplant Marchesa gown. Simply cut with bare shoulders and cinched at the waist made her look non-fussy and sophisticated. Her hair was straightened and tied into a side pony with smokey eyes and nude lips. Others who wore wines were Maura Tierney in a Jenny Packham gown and Christine Baransky appeared in a ZAC Posen gown looking very graceful at her age.

10. Snow Queens in Whites!

The Golden Globes 2015 In Its Fashionable Glory

Ideally, we associate white with balmy summer months, but here are some women who astonished us in pristine white dresses fit for the queen. The beautiful Salma Hayek wore an ivory white off-shoulder gown by Alexander McQueen. It looked a bit wedding gown-ish but she wore a silver belt which complimented the overall look.

Kristen Wiig was seen in a vintage Delphine Manivet gown. Not the most figure flattering but she still looked superb.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus wore a Narciso Rodriguez one-shoulder gown with beading on the bustier and then there was Felicity Huffman who was also seen in white but a knee length Lorena Sarbu dress. There were a host of other whites around that day too.

11. Bejeweled!

The Golden Globes 2015 In Its Fashionable Glory

Although, I’ve mentioned some of the spectacular jaw-dropping jewellery that was worn by the stars, I thought I would devote a separate section on just a handful of some the bling that is praise-worthy and damn were those sparklers to die for or what!

George Clooney’s newly wedded wife Amal Alamuddin wore drop-dead gorgeous cascading Harry Winston diamond earrings comprising of about 30 carats of stones. I mean, just wow! I’ll kill for Harry Winston bling any day. Wouldn’t you?

Naomi Watts wore her mysterious but envious diamond serpent Bulgari necklace consisting of over 77 carats of diamonds. Now that’s a girl’s best friend for life!Helen Mirren shone in elegant diamond and ruby Chopard earrings. Salma wore diamonds on her ears and wrists by Boucheron. Kate Beckinsale chose to wear fabulous dangling jewelry by Lorraine Scharwtz, who seemed to be a preferred jeweller by many on this occasion. A vintage pair of studs was seen on Felicity Jones by Van Cleef & Arpels and was chic and understated. There were many who also wore Tiffany & Co. along with a myriad of big names in the jewellery business.

12. Bag That Clutch!

The Golden Globes 2015 In Its Fashionable Glory

There’s always a time in our lives when we have put together an impressive ensemble but can’t seem to find the right bag/clutch to finish off the look. Let’s see some of the many clutches that decorated the event.

Diane Kruger was seen carrying a mother-of-pearl Emm Kuo clutch. Loved the box shape! Salma Hayek chose a white Alexander McQueen knuckleduster to pair with her gown. Kate Beckinsale possessed a nude Rauwolf clutch to team with her Ellie Saab nude gown. Julianna-Margulies chose a simple black Bulgari clutch. Host Tina Fey carried a minaudière. Naomi Watts’s Bulgari clutch was as delicious as her neckpiece and the list goes on…..sigh! Need to take a moment to take this all in!

13. These Shoes Are Made For Walkin!

The Golden Globes 2015 In Its Fashionable Glory

Shoes are my most favourite accessory as you can’t do without them and there’s never a limit on how many pairs you should own. Enjoy some of the best shoes that did all the walking: Diane Kruger nailed the red carpet from her gown to her clutch and her shoes didn’t let us down either. She wore a pair of Brian Atwood blush suede “Karin” 6-inch, ankle-strapped platform heels…whoa!

Giuliana Rancic was seen sporting some wonderful Tom Ford cream, ankle-strapped stilettos which had collar detailing and a gold mirror metallic chainlink stiletto heel. Kerry Washington wore Christian Louboutin ‘Miss Rigidaine’ 5 inch heels in black and raspberry pvc. Didn’t like her dress but she had some great accessories and Cindy Crawford was spotted in silver Jimmy Choo Lance strappy sandals. I could go on and on just on shoes….!

14. Are You Man Enough!

The Golden Globes 2015 In Its Fashionable Glory

Why should women have all the fun, so here’s acknowledging some of the men too who looked dapper.

Matthew McConaughey looked uber smart in his aubergine toned suit. It was a Dolce & Gabbana three-piece, peak-lapel tuxedo and he paired it with Louboutins.

The gorgeous Matt Bomer wore a Ralph Lauren Black Label navy shawl collar tuxedo with a small bowtie. Alan Cuming was seen in a rather unorthodox nude tuxedo teamed with a nude shirt, nude trousers and a nude silk tie from Calvin Klein. To top it off he wore Christian Louboutin sneakers.

One firecracker was David Oyelowo who not only carried off a metallic blue suit from Dolce & Gabanna but, accessorized this with glittery Jimmy Choo ‘Sloane’ loafers. Guess some men love their shimmer too!

15. Fashion Faux Pas!

The Golden Globes 2015 In Its Fashionable Glory

I’m going to end my GGA fashion trends memoir with a few of them who got it terribly wrong (will only highlight the ladies as this article was dedicated more for them) and hope they’ve learnt a lesson and pray they don’t make the same dastardly mistakes at the Oscars.

When I saw them I was like what were they thinking! Didn’t they look in the mirror before they stepped out! Looks like being famous and having bags of money isn’t everything to making a fashion statement…oh well better luck next time!

Here are a few of my selected ones and their disasters are self-explanatory. Amal Clooney looked enchanting in her Dior Haute Couture black gown, but why oh why did she wear those ill-fitted white gloves. I can understand what she was trying to achieve in her overall look but that wrecked the whole outfit.

The worst was probably Keira Knightley and I know you will all agree. What was Chanel and herself thinking! It wasn’t a fancy-dress party where you go as a frumpy milk maid with butterflies sprayed all over you. Sorry Keira, you will have to live this faux pas moment for the rest of the year, unless the tabloids spare you.

Lena Dunham, although dressed in a Zac Posen red gown, she failed at her red carpet moment as it just had no shape whatsoever.

Ex-Bond girl Rosamund Pike showed up in an ill-fitted Vera Wang which looked quite droopy on her otherwise-hot body. I mean that is utter sacrilege to wear Vera Wang wrong…tsk…tsk…tsk!

There were a few more standouts but who wants to ponder over fashion blasphemies! So, let’s just enjoy the highlights instead. Hope you liked it guys!

Au revoir

xoxo

  3. Wow such a detailed post Mimosa! Amazing! I agree with the fashion faux pas list but makeup-wise, I can’t figure out what Emily Blunt told her MUA. She looks weird and different.

    1. Thanks Ramya…..btw Emily Blunts makeup is a bit washed out na! I like the eyes but her lipstick is bland…It’s apparently Dior lipstick in Grege (nude) but she’s anyways so pale in skin tone so agree with you! Good point!
