The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil Review

Hello Lovely Ladies,

I thought it was time for another skincare review. So, today’s review is on one more product from the much coveted brand – The Ordinary! The brand has pretty much exploded on the beauty community with a bang! It came into the limelight somewhere last year when Wayne Goss first introduced it on his YouTube channel. Since then, there has been a lot of talk about it and people wanting to purchase it. However, it wasn’t readily available in the market. At that time, the only stockist was VictoriHealth, which operates in the UK, from whom I procured my stock. Seeing a huge demand and all the hype around it, other retailers were quick to jump on the opportunity and stock the brand. Now, it’s readily available online at many sites. I reviewed their Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2% earlier on IMBB. Today’s review is on the 100% Organic Cold Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil. Let us see how this one fared.

The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil details

Key Ingredients:
Rosehip seed oil: a plant oil that is extracted without heat to preserve its rich nutrients, including linoleic acid, linolenic acid, and provitamin A. The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil: Pure Rosehip Oil as a daily support formula for all skin types by Deciem. The Ordinary Rosehip Oil uses 100% pure Rosehip Seed Oil that is both cold-pressed and organic. Rosehip Seed Oil is rich in linoleic acid, linolenic acid and pro-vitamin A, all of which degrade when the oil extraction process involves heat. While cold-pressed extraction is complex, it preserves all of the quality of this important oil which has been shown to reduce signs of photo-ageing and many other skin conditions.
Organic Rosehip Oil is supplied in UV-protective packaging.

My Experience with The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil:

My standard skin type information – I have oily to combination skin which gets dull and dehydrated very easily – due to my lousy eating habits and my horrid sleeping patterns (and age!!!!) Also, I deal with periodic acne and the scars left over from previous ones!

You would have read numerous reviews on IMBB for Rose Hip Oil as well as its various benefits. Rose Hip Oil is a lightweight oil which makes it suitable for girls with dry skin and even someone with normal or oily skin. Considering it contains lanoleic acid, it is supposed to be excellent in countering signs of ageing caused by photosensitivity and sun damage. Couple of things to note here – The Ordinary’s Rose Hip Oil is 100% Organic and Cold Pressed. Why is this aspect important?

Organic – This means that the product is grown organically – i.e. without the use of chemicals and pesticides. This makes the process labour intensive – hence, higher cost of such products. However, considering that the product is free from all chemicals, the product has better nutrient value/more nutrients. Growing products organically is also better for the ecosystem, but I will not get into that.

Cold pressed oil can be derived from a product by a complex method of cold pressing it or by using substantial heat. The resultant product obviously varies in molecular structure, taste and nutrition value. Why? Because heat tends to change the molecular structure of products and can also destroy nutrients. A simple example would be – Would you prefer a freshly-squeezed orange juice or would you prefer oranges to be subjected to substantial heat so that the juices of the orange leech out. In the former scenario – you are able to preserve the nutrition value of the orange/juice. In the latter scenario, the heat will destroy Vitamin C and the resultant product will not be as nutritional as the former one.

When it comes to Marula Oil or argan oil, there are other known players in the market – namely Drunk elephant and Josie Maran. However, when it comes to rose hip seed oil, I did not find any one company, which was more popular than the others. If you check online, rose hip seed oil, seems to be available at a variety of price points. So, the edge that The Ordinary has, which is their price point, may be lost in context to this product. Having said that, do note, that in the case of a number of local brands available in the market – you may not really know what is actually inside the bottle. A number of time, it might not be pure rose hip seed oil but a concoction made out of Rose Hip Seed oil in a cheaper oil base. At least when it comes to a known brand, I refer to the parent Company, Diciem, you know the content in the bottle is the same as what has been printed on top, it is 100% Rose Hip Seed oil.

Now, finally, coming to the product in hand – the oil comes packaged in the typical “The Ordinary” packaging. It constitutes of a glass bottle with a dropper dispenser. The same comes packaged in a plain white cardboard box with all the application instructions mentioned on the bottle and the box both. The packaging pretty much stays the same for all products except the photosensitive ones which are in a darker bottle – like this product.

The oil itself is amber in colour, which is the natural colour of the oil. There is no added colour or fragrance. It smells a little off, but then, skincare shouldn’t really smell pleasant or rather – need not smell pleasant. More often than not, the pleasant smell is due to added fragrance, which can actually be a skin irritant.

Application: This oil should be applied on a clean face post your toning steps and application of all other water-based skincare – like your serum and treatments. about 3 drops are sufficient for the whole face.

Texture: The oil is fairly lightweight. Even on my oily skin, it absorbs quite easily – it takes about a minute or two. I prefer to mix it with a face cream, I feel this helps absorb it even more quicker. The oil should ideally be the last step in skincare – you may/may not want to follow it up with a moisturiser depending on your skin type. It being a light oil – someone with dry skin tone might need additional moisturiser on top.

Efficacy: To ease me into the process of applying this, I started off using this by mixing 2-3 drops of the oil with my Belif Moisturising Bomb. The first time that I had applied the combination, I was fairly blown away with the results. In the morning, my skin felt plump, moisturized, relaxed. The moisture retention and plumpness was so effective that the area around my eyes felt rested and the fine lines around my eyes seemed lesser. A point to note is also that before I started using this, I was off my skincare routine for about a couple of weeks. Why? One of the products that I was testing had given me a bad reaction plus I was going through some exhausting days and would be so drained out that I couldn’t put in that extra 5 minutes in the night for skincare routine. I’d just fall into bed. Needless to say, my skin wasn’t in a good shape when I started this product, so obviously the results were more distinctly visible. If you have a strong skincare game on, you will still get results but they won’t be as distinct on the first night itself.

Continued usage of the oil – sometimes mixed with the moisturiser and sometimes on its own – have resulted in locking in moisture for my “ageing” skin – which tends to get dehydrated. So, my skin definitely looks nourished, healthy and has a natural (non-greasy) glow. Has it totally revised the signs of sun damage? I’d say, not yet, but I do feel the difference in the skin and I have hope that continued usage will definitely help me to get there.

  1. Hi KK..fab review as always. Thanks for the details on what is cold pressed. Rosehip oil is my HG skincare oil. I will try this brand next time

  2. Superbly reviewed.. This sounds promising specifically at this price range..
From which websites we can get it here in India ?

    1. Hey Asmi, The product doesn’t retail in India yet. The best way to procure it would be through Beautylish – which delivers worldwide. They are fairly quick and have probably the best customer service!

  3. Veryyyyy well written KK…
.. always love the way you describe any product..?? I have ordered it today with few other products frm same brand (The ordinary)… currently m using their Advanced Retinoid 2%, Hyaluronic Acid 2% +B5 and Lactic Acid 10% and I’m LOVING ALL these products..

    1. Thanks Prabh! I’m glad you found the review helpful! It’s always great to find good skincare which works – rather than just being marketing jargon

  4. Hi kul…. U have got me convinced into buying it.
Just wanted to ask a little question off the topic…. I want to try drunk elephant products which one should I start with first and I have never used acids on my face

    1. Hey! Sorry, i missed your question – i rarely come back to earlier reviews. The 2 products from DE which are constantly raved about are their TLC Glycol Night serum and their C-Firma Day Serum. Both are fairly expensive. I have not used the first one but i swear by the second one. I am on my second bottle. The fact that i have stuck to it despite its price – i am amazed. There was time, couple of months back – my entire skincare routine had gone for a toss (i was travelling). This was the only thing which was constant and it saved my skin. I am also using their Virgin Marula Oil – will be reviewing it soon. It too is excellent. But the price point is heavy. And the Ordinary skincare line provides some alternatives to that.
