TIGI Bed Head Control Freak Serum Review

Hey guys,

So there is a bunch of research out there that says that people share negative experiences with products more often than positive ones. Browsing through my reviews on IMBB, I noticed the opposite; most of my reviews were for products that I have absolutely loved. I guess the rant-worthy ones just weren’t worth the time in my head. I now realize that, sure, raving about stuff you love is great, but sometimes friends need a heads up. Today, I will be reviewing Bed Head’s Control Freak Serum, hope y’all find it useful!

Product Description:

Control Freak is a frizz control and straightening serum that promises to fight “the frizz and stomp the curl.” Its “light, greaseless and humidity resistant formula delivers a straight-up glossy finish and leaves hair smooth and silky with a glossy finish. It claims to be great for “naturally curly or frizzy hair.” It also “fights humidity” and acts as a thermal protectant.

My Experience with TIGI Bed Head Control Freak Serum:

Gotta hand it over to Bed Head, with product names like Dumb Blonde, Ego Booster, and Control Freak, they sure do make their products a lot of fun.  Add to that the bright, clever packaging and you have products no beauty junkie can resist.

When I saw Control Freak on the shelves, I knew I had to get it. The plastic bottle that reminded me of glue bottles I used when I was younger and the beautiful aqua-green color with tons of shimmer in it appealed to my inner child. I needed a new serum anyway, so I ended up picking this bottle that looked most like something you would use for an art project, over ones I actually know work well. Well, actually, I picked two bottles, but that’s a story I will come back to later. With most other salon-quality hair serums, you get about half the product for this price, so it seemed like I was getting a really good deal.

Let’s get started with my hair type. I have dry, damaged, wavy hair with a pretty oily scalp and I am always looking for products that will make my hair softer, shinier, appear fuller, and minimize heat damage. This “serum” actually isn’t much like any other I have used before. The texture is more like a thin, watery, gel and there is no slip to it, as you often experience with silicone-based serums. Once I put it in my hair, it actually takes some time to dry and becomes stickier as it dries. Of course, this isn’t as noticeable if you’re using it on wet hair, but it’s something I found odd nonetheless. I am not sure how much of this product is ideal for covering my whole hair. With serums, I generally use a teeny-tiny amount, but with this I feel like using much more is the way to go. I use it mostly as a heat protectant before I flat-iron my hair and very seldom before blow drying it. Because of the wetness, it often makes my hair damp and clump up together. However, this issue is quickly resolved once I run the iron through it.

The serum does absolutely nothing for me in terms of frizz control and protection against humidity. As soon as I step outside on a humid day, my hair is frizzy again. I expected that with the stickiness of the product that it will somehow at least keep my hair from getting frizzy, but didn’t feel that particular benefit. However, on non-humid days, it does a decent job of holding my style in place. The product doesn’t make my hair any shinier either. The shimmer in it is pretty much useless and just there to make the product look pretty (much like an actress in a Bollywood-masala film). This actually doesn’t help the dullness and dryness of my hair and actually makes it feel and, to a certain extent, rather crunchy. I get none of that silky hair feeling that you get after using other serums.

What works for me is its amazing green apple smell. Also, it doesn’t weigh hair down or leave me with super oily hair the next day, as is the case with many silicone-heavy hair products. But, honestly, these aren’t enough to salvage this product in my eyes. I was so disappointed by this, I actually left one of the bottles at a relative’s house “by mistake.” I couldn’t throw it away and hope they have a better use for it! Anyway, this one was a major dud for me and I won’t be repurchasing it.

Pros of TIGI Bed Head Control Freak Serum:

  • Isn’t as expensive as other salon quality products.
  • Smells really nice.
  • Looks pretty.
  • Doesn’t weigh hair down.
  • Doesn’t make hair super oily the next day after styling.

Cons of TIGI Bed Head Control Freak Serum:

  • Doesn’t add shine.
  • Doesn’t guard against frizz and humidity.
  • Makes hair crunchy.
  • Instructions don’t specify how much product is ideal for use.
