Tips to Care for Oily Skin

Oily skin tends to age better and develop fewer wrinkles than dry or normal skin. This is probably one of the most optimistic beginning of an article that is based on oily skin.

Oily skin is not a disease, it just require more attention, since you need to keep cleansing those over productive pores. The key is a firm but gentle hand. Whether your oily skin is genetic or caused by poor diet or environmental factors, here are some easy tips that can help you get that oil free glowy complexion:

• Avoid using alcohol-based products on your oily skin. Such products will only activate the natural oils in the skin to continue to produce more oil and hence will make your face look oilier.

• Opt for water-based products instead to reduce the shine on your face. Using skin care or make-up products that are oil-based will block the pores on your skin and will leave you with a blemished skin.

• Do not wash your face too frequently. Wash your face twice a day with a gentle, oil-free cleanser that has salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide in it to help dry up blemishes.

• Tone your skin with astringent after washing your face. You can also mix one part apple cider vinegar with 3 parts water. Dab the mixture onto the face with a cotton ball.

• Give yourself a clay facial mask once or twice weekly to reduce greasiness and draw out impurities from your skin.

• Massage your face with buttermilk 2-3 times a week. The active cultures in buttermilk contain acids that help to clean away dirt and tighten pores. Leave it on for a few minutes, then rinse with warm water. Moisturize your skin as usual.

• Mix 1tsp of cucumber juice with lime juice and use a cotton ball to apply it on the greasy sections at least 30 minutes before taking a bath.

• Eat a balanced diet for a glowing skin. Reduce the intake of sugar, saturated fats and trans fats found in many fast food in bulk. Fruits and vegetables that have a bright red colour, like red peppers, tomatoes, watermelon, raspberries, are a rich source of antioxidants particularly an antioxidant called Lycopene. It protects our cells from free radical damages. Fruits and vegetables that have a bright orange or yellow colour, like oranges, carrots, sweet potatoes, and mangos, are high in vitamin C and Beta carotene. Green foods like kiwi, spinach, cabbage, broccoli and avocado, eliminate toxins from our body.

• Drink at least 8 glasses of water to hydrate and moisturize your skin. Water also helps to flush out toxins from our body.

• Keep your hands off your face as much as possible because your hands touch so many surfaces, they are a magnet for dirt and germs. Rub your eyes, stroke your chin, cup your cheek, and you’ve transferred everything on your hands to your face.

While these tips aren’t going to change your skin type, they will certainly help you deal with it.

  2. Thanks a lot for these tips.. And do suggest a toner for oily skin. I tried the fab india teatree one but it was quite useless.

  3. Oily skin is actually a boon in disguise – We oile skinnies save up a ton on heavy moisturisers , and never go flaky in winters ,and our skin wrinkles at a much later age , and most of the times people mistake the oil on our skin for a dewy glow. 😀 hah.
