10 Tips to Fix Unmanageable, Tangled Hair

I am back with another post on how you can treat unmanageable, tangled hair so that you can style it as you like, and keep your hair looking healthy, shiny and strong. If you have very fine hair that is also voluminous, then you will know what it means to have unmanageable hair that gets easily tangled up. On the other hand, women with very curly, rough or frizzy hair can also face the same problem and it can become quite difficult to manage. Here are 10 tips for you to try if your hair is unmanageable and prone to tangles.

Tangled hair and unmanageable

1. Restore the moisture in your hair:

If your hair has become too rough, dry or difficult to manage (due to which you have tangles in your hair), then the first thing to do would be to restore the moisture in your hair. For this purpose, you could use a serum, a leave-in conditioner, an essential oil or a dry oil.

Recommendation: The Body Shop Wild Argan Dry Oil

2. Use hair smoothing serums:

Make it a habit to apply a smoothing serum to your hair 2-3 times a day. This will tame the frizz and make your hair smoother and much easier to manage. You could also use a detangling spray if you like.

3. Oil your hair before washing it:

Washing your hair too frequently can dry it out and make it more difficult to manage. Make sure to oil your hair and comb it properly before washing it.

Recommendation: Forest Essentials Organic Cold Pressed Virgin Almond Oil

4. Wash your hair correctly:

Don’t make the mistake of tangling up your hair while you’re shampooing it. Wash it gently so that you’re not increasing the friction in between the hair. Use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo to clean your hair.

Recommendation: L’Oreal OleoTherapy Sulfate Free Shampoo

5. Comb your hair with conditioner on:

Once you have applied conditioner in your hair, leave it on for a few minutes and take a wide-toothed comb to gently comb the tangles out of your hair. This will make your hair significantly more manageable.

6. Use a leave-in conditioner:

In addition to using a regular conditioner, you might also want to use a leave-in conditioner after you have washed your hair. This will add more moisture and tame your hair and make it frizz-free.

Recommendation: Living Proof No Frizz Leave In Conditioner

7. Use a detangling brush or comb:

If you have unmanageable hair that is prone to tangles, it is essential to use a specialized detangling hairbrush or a wide-toothed comb made with natural materials (like wood).

Recommendations: The Wet Brush, Tangle Teezer

8. Avoid heat and color treatments:

With unmanageable and tangle-prone hair, it is important for you to avoid all kinds of heat-based styling treatments as well as color treatments, as these make the situation worse. Try out some heat-free hairstyles and natural colors.

9. Comb your hair from bottom to top:

The best way to deal with tangled and difficult-to-manage hair is to start by combing from the ends and gradually working your way up to the crown. Always be gentle and never tug your hair.

10. Sleep with your hair in a loose braid:

A good way to avoid getting your hair all tangled up is to pull your hair together in a loose braid before you go to bed. You can also switch up your pillowcase to a satin one and see the difference!

Bonus Tip: Vaseline petroleum jelly or any other petroleum jelly would help seal in moisture and help detangle hair as well, just remember to apply only a pea-sized amount, otherwise the hair will go flat and greasy.
