Tips On Shopping For High End Makeup – Part 2

Tips On Shopping For High End Makeup – Part 2

Welcome Back Ladies!

In the previous article, I covered the pre-preparation before spending big bucks on high-end makeup products. After all the pre-preparation is done, it’s time to go for the date and have fun with colours! Here are some tips on what to watch out for while shopping:

Tips_On_Shopping_For_High_End_Makeup_Part_2

Do Not Go With Hubby/Kids:

This is pretty self-explanatory, you can do without:

  • Hubby’s regular glances to the watch.
  • The kids trying to get in on the swatches.
  • Everybody screaming/hollering – “How much longer?”
  • Or the worst of it all – when you ask him which colour is looking nice on you – “Sab hi ache lagte hain”! Thanks, that’s a lot of help!!

Dress Right:

I know this sounds funny here and I know I will get a lot of flak for this in the comments section, but understand that the beauty industry is like that. I can dress hobo and go to MAC and the SAs will act all snobbish and be unwilling to attend me while the Estee Lauder Girls will still treat me as a customer. It depends on brand to brand and sometimes just from one SA to another, they are also humans. I feel that I get better service from a outlet having high-end product when I am dressed for it, be it overall or just carrying one signature piece like a branded handbag. If doing this, changes the attitude of the person across me, towards me, so be it. I want a good experience. Period! Their myopic views remains just that – Theirs!

This fact doesn’t just relate to cosmetic industry. I am an ex-hotelier who moved to the Indian Banking/Insurance sector. I was the only person in the entire office who felt more comfortable in business suits than anything else, thanks to my hoteliering background with an American chain. My boss, super-boss and the entire lineage did not wear suits or even ties except for meeting in the Corporate Head Office. Once, we were supposed to have a full day session with the Government Regulatory Body and our Compliance head told us what time to come, with what reports to bring and informed us to come in formals and then looking at me he specified, “Indian formals” – meaning salwar kameez! I was affronted. But my Super boss kind of elucidated it for me later stating that the people from Government Regulatory body are used to a certain atmosphere. If us, dressing in salwar kameez makes them feel more comfortable around us, why not? Makes sense now? Ok….moving on :))

Hand swatch:

Don’t just start with applying the lipstick shade on your face, try a hand/arm swatch instead. Shortlist the colours you like on the basis of the swatch and then go for face/lip application.

Another thing, when doing hand swatch, apply the product yourself, especially if it’s a lipstick, lip liner or eyeliner pencil instead of letting the SA do it for you. Why? How does it make a difference? Well, when you apply, you will swipe the product once or twice and see the pigmentation and have a clear idea of how opaque the colour is or how smooth the application is. However, when the SAs swipe, they tend to quickly swipe 5-6 times building up the colour to an intensity which you are not likely to get when actually applying the product. Imagine going over the lips or eyes 5-6 times while applying a product, that would not make sense.

Face/Lip Swatch:

This is the best part of buying a high-end product, you get to try the shade on you before buying, this ensures that you know exactly how it looks on you and whether the shade is flattering or not.

Quick tips for the swatches:

  • Carry your own brush – You could carry your own brush for lipstick application or ask the SA to sanitize the lipstick tester before you use it on your lips. For blush, bronzer, foundation, etc., definitely carry your own brush because how you normally apply a product, using your tools, is the way you would want to see the colour. What’s the point of applying a foundation with a paddle brush at the store when you would be using a stippling brush at home, which would give you sheerer coverage than a paddle brush. You could end up picking a wrong kind of foundation with that.
  • Own_brush_to_carry

  • Ask for makeup remover or moisturizer to take off the product each time. Do not let the SA give you a dry tissue or cotton to remove the product.  Rubbing with a dry tissue will harm the skin/lips.
  • Mentally, make allowance for the degradation of the tester to an extent. Like I mentioned in my review of YSL Glossy stain Rouge Laque, the tester was much thicker than the actual liquid in a new piece. Also, I generally find the Guerlain Rouge G and YSL Voluptes melting a little to the point of being gloopy. That’s because they are testers, they come in contact with a lot of people and a lot of air, way more than a fresh product would (once bought by you). Make allowance for that.
  • A lot of SAs will offer to give you a lip liner or lip primer while trying a lipstick. I tend to say no to the offer. Because if I use either of the products in the store and not at home, I won’t get the same result and I am physically in the shop to try the product, to see the actual result. Plus I will not know the true shade or whether the colour bleeds or whether it is difficult to apply around the lip contours directly form the bullet.
  • Always start lip swatches from lighter shade in your selection and moving onto darker shade. This is self-explanatory, dark shades may stain your lips and you will not know the impact of a lighter shade if tried on stained lips.
  • Another thing I do sometimes when I have time or I am buying a very expensive product is that I take a selfie with the product on. I then see these selfies on my laptop and take a call on what shade or product actually looks more flattering on me. Do note, that some outlets may have a policy about taking pics within the premise, please check.

Pics_of_Selfies_

Do not always believe the SA on how good the product looks on you, please understand that they have sales target to achieve. Instead, you can walk around with the product and see it in a different light or ask someone not related, how the product looks on you. I have actually roamed malls with two different shades of eyeshadows on each lid and even different foundations on each side of my face. But that’s me!

Before Leaving:

Always check for GWP and offers and take a call accordingly. If you are buying two or more products, you would generally get a GWP, please check.

  • Pls reconfirm the bill amount and the product, unused and correct shade before leaving the counter since makeup products cannot be returned back, at least in India.

There are different ways people justify a splurge on high end product, some feel its okay to get some product which is hyped but they would use less so that it lasts longer with them, since its expensive. Others feel that they should buy something which they will use often, what’s the point of spending so much money if you don’t use it often! Do share what are your thoughts on this. At the end, it’s fun to go shopping and even more fun when you come home with something which has a fab packaging, amazing shade and a remarkable texture. Hopefully, my tips will help you buy winners instead of duds!

Cheers!

Love, K

  1. KK…..awesome tips…..actually, you are absolutely right about dressing up *haanji* Also, about not tagging along kid and hubby while doing makeup shopping, couldn’t agree with you more *hihi* *hihi*

    1. *thankyou* Jomol! Glad you liked the write-up! In the Mall, while beauty shopping, Hubby and kids just fry my patience…or maybe its me who fries theirs!! rofl rofl rofl

      1. KK…. rofl rofl rofl its mutual I guess. Its so damn tough while picking the foundation, questions like “you haven’t finished the last one,” Rs. 2100 for such a small thing? *headbang* *headbang*

and GWP…..I am clever in that department…..the first question I put through is “what do I get with this?” *preen* *preen* *preen*

        1. We have to become smart shoppers . the concept of sharing GWP with customers to build brand loyalty is totally lost on some SAs.

My hubby says, you have a pink lipstick, you have a orange lipstick – as if ek hai to bus ho gaya!!! Men!!!

          1. main to shopping hi gwp k liye karti hu.. *hihi* *hihi*
I second ur points that hubby n ki shud b busy suwhere else.. *ghost* whenever i shop for such serous matters like lip color or powder they always bug n poke me from behind.. *ghost* ache se hsade b lagao to bandar ki tarah haste rahenge.. huhh.. *yawn*
nw I mostly shop in weekedns wen kido n daddy r fast asleep provided I have enough blnc.. 😛 else take them to eatery n take deep breathe

            1. I totally agree Neetu! Its such a pain when someone is hovering on your head to finish up!

N I love GWPs – sometimes I don’t even use them – (have so many skincare samples!) But its still fun!

  2. Awesome post…. *jai ho* *jai ho* *jai ho* Roaming in the Mall with 2 different eye shadows & foundation… *hihi* *hihi* *hihi* But when we are splurging on some high end product, this seem justified…. *hifive* *hifive* *hifive*

There are so many things to learn from IMBB and from you great people out there…. *thankyou*

    1. *pompom* Yogita! Glad you found the post informative! You have no idea how crazy i look in the mall – i’ll be trying Guerlain or EL lip pies but going to YSL for taking the selfies – they have better lighting!! No one minds coz they all are so used to me now! *hihi* *hihi*

  3. KK, all the pointers are so apt and correct, u r so right in mentioning that if a certain attire makes some ppl comfortable, no harm in doing so….even I used to dress up in business suits in my last organisation, i work in HR dept, now this current company has relaxed dress-code policy and i roam around in my jeans most of the times…initially people would look at me and my suits and comment/ bitch *hunterwali* …which made me part ways with my highly formal clothing *headbang* ..anyway! ur pointer no. 1- dressing up stylish/ branded as I have seen that SAs especially at MAC do not entertain simplicity….i may be wrong, but that is what I have seen happening generally. the other pointers are so useful…m surely picking up this habit of carrying my own tools and self application, u r so rite, these SAs would swipe product themselves and then makes us even more confused.. *thankyou* *thankyou* for this article…this is gonna help so many of us.

    1. *thankyou* Anuradha! Im so happy that you found the post informative!

IN my workplace – I never gave up wearing blazers and suits – i loved them too much – too hoots to what anyone else thought. Sometimes, I would actually wear blazers with jeans – it was even more fun! Try that combo!

  4. You were absolutely right not to take along Husband…. *nonono* *nonono* *nonono*
Mine toh always says “ITNA EXPENSIVE…. Wo bhi yeh LIPSTICK” *smug* *smug* *smug*

    1. Mine stands looking bored and glancing at his watch. I hate beauty shopping with him! Worst is when he says – u have “orange” lippy!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously!!!???

  5. The post is really informative. *clap* . I agree with you about dressing up well .It really makes a difference. I prefer shopping alone or with my mom only. No hubby , no kids , no relatives. Yes, it depends on person to person whether you want to spend on high-end product or not. My take is you must have at least one high -end foundation, compact and one or two lipstick. We deserve it once in a while. *pompom*

    1. *thankyou* Nimisha! Glad you liked the post! Yes, a high end base, a couple of lippies and a high end blush as well. I feel, blush is very under-rated, but if you have one really good one – you may not need to look elsewhere. How often do we hit pan on our blushes! It will last you ages.

  6. one of the best posts ever publishd on IMBB…i always wantd to try high end makeup but sumwhat felt intimidated…nw m sure gonna try…well done kk

    1. *thankyou* Sangita for such sweet words! Im happy to have helped! That was the whole idea – to remove the feel of intimdation from the entire process and make it fun!

  7. first of all, what a post KK *clap* *clap* *clap*
    commendable *announce*
i want to continue from my last comments that actually my bro n mom can bring in MAc from UK but if i don’t like the shade then what!!! and if you say i buy something better at this price then let me reveal that YSL pre-orders ask for 4500 per lipstick rofl
i never take hubby on any shopping, i want my time and my space to select and 8/10 times he never helps in picking up what i really want *woot* 😛 and i never even thought that my appearance ,matters like that, next time i am going to keep that in mind. and such a nice guideline abt SA…very true, i never realized those facts, neither ever had any idea to take my brush and lip brush with me that at time leads me to pick up shade that actually i regret spending on. great post lady, thank you *salute*

    1. Hey Sumera, quick question, If you have the option of buying MAC from UK, why can’t mom/brother pick YSL instead? Check for switches on IMBB – for MAC they have the whole range. For YSL, quite a few are covered. Maybe I can help you with shade selection. Buying at the price points you are mentioning is crazy! Its exorbitant!!

Glad you found the post helpful! *thankyou* *happy dance* *happy dance* *happy dance*

  8. i want to add up something here. especially to be read by IMBB owners and team that my habby has eventually settled with my cosmetic shopping because he thinks IMBB is the most graceful blog on Earth, a very healthy community and he knows it keeps me happy even on rough days so he is not actually upset with my cosmetic craze anymore now…. 😀

    1. Sumera…..that’s so awesome…..happy to hear that *happy dance* *happy dance* *happy dance* *happy dance* *happy dance* special thanks to your hubby *thanks* *thanks*

  9. Superb tips *clap* , I totally agree dressing sense and appearance matters a lot *preen* , and it is best to go with girl friends which share a similar interest for shopping rather than brother in my case he just gets so annoyed and pissed off *hihi* , I recently bought my first Mac lipstick Mocha, and am already thinking to go for impassioned , also looking forward to explore other brands *haan ji* *happy dance*

    1. So happy for you that you are liking what you picked! Impassioned is a full on hot colour – its fab! My first lippy from MAC was Mehr, then a LE one and then Impassioned! Ya – do check other brands, thee are better ones than MAC. Its a huge world filled with fantastic colours!
*happy dance* *happy dance* *happy dance*

  10. such great n useful tips!!!! *woot* i totally agree with what u have mentioned about dressing right way.. it kind of leaves an impression… this happened to me when i bought my first MAC product.. was in college so casual dressing.. the SA dint pay much attention.. bt when i paid for the product.. OMG!!!! her attitude changed completely.. she was more helpful after everything was over.. bt I was kinda pissed off.. *pan* *nonono*

*thankyou* for other tips.. would definitely keep in mind.. *happy dance* *happydance*

    1. *thankyou* Sruti! Glad you found the article informative! Its so shameful to admit this but yes, this is so common in MAC. Wish they would train their staff on the social skills as well. When you spend so much, the least you expect is good service!

  11. awesome article kk..some of them are so true. SA showed me MAC chilli lipstick with MAC brick lipliner and when i came home and tried it without it it wasnt looking that great and defined without lipliner. So i need to purchase now a lipliner. *headbang* thankyou *thankyou* for these great tips, even dressing definitely matters 🙂

    1. *thankyou* Harshu! Glad you liked it! I feel bad, but this is one of the most common ways that SAs try to upsell to make you buy lip-liners when you buy lipsticks. And if we are talking of MAC, the Lip liner is priced the same as a lippy, if not more (prolong wear range). They don’t realise that the customer once home, will actually feel bad and duped!

  12. such a helpful post gal 🙂 In the past I bought wrong lip pies & foundation… but then I started the 1hr rule… leave it on for at least an hour and then buy 🙂
And don’t get me started on taking the hubby to shopping… just last weekend I bought totally wrong mascara… grrrr
5 mins into the store he starts to rush to the checkout… I was so angry, I’mlike running around picking vicks and peanuts and stuff… grrrr

    1. *thankyou* Bee! Glad you liked it! Its a shame to spend so much money only to realise that you picked a wrong product! *waaa* *waaa*

  13. Grt post kk… *clap* *clap*
Loved all d tips… howvr me too nt hpy wid mac SAs.. really rude… spoiled my first experience… How mediocre of people to judge others frm their attires… *pan* *hunterwali*

    1. I agree! Its shameful that people judge you by your attire – but this is hard reality. I hear so many incidents from my friends (at other counters) about customers who feel put-off after stepping in MAC and then they come and rant at Guerlain or YSL or EL or Clinique counters. Yes, it totally spoils your day and your impression of the whole brand!

But glad you liked the article Niharika!

        1. I totally agree kk…. really wish mac gives itz SA sm training… i jst put up wid dere snooty behaviour for d sake of mac’s gud quality pdts…

  14. Very nice article Kulpreet, I always look forward for your articles as they are so informative and shows your experience in makeup which is so needed when we spend on high end makeup stuff. I agree with you on all parts especially dressing right. Looking forward for more posts from you *waaa* *waaa* *waaa* *waaa* *waaa*

  15. Superrbbbbb KK *clap* *clap* *clap* *clap* i think there is nothing that you have forgotten *hifive* *hifive* you are a pro *jai ho* *jai ho* i know i always get distracted when people shout “How longer?” *devil* *devil* but now i think i will make it a point to tell them to go home *hihi* *hihi* you know makeup mein toh think hai.. but as you talk about SA’s for clothes… they always tell me “This is slim fit specially for people like you” *hihi* *hihi* and i always think how cheesy man *headbang* *hihi*

    1. *thankyou* Saloni! Glad you liked the post!

N I totally agree, that is sooooo cheesy! The other thing I hate is when you ask people some detail about a product and they tell you the price instead – meaning, do you really wanna know coz it doesn’t look like you can afford it. *hunterwali* *hunterwali* *hunterwali*

  16. OMG KK, you are so right about every point… its my personal experience too…
Most SAs are so pushy.. they wont even listen to what you want and simply try to sell certain products stating that they are very much in fashion and whatever nonsense…

    1. Tell me about it!!!! Their sales targets weigh heavenly on their mind! There is a lot of emphasis to push customers to skincare range – i presume coz its expensive and may lead to repeat buys later. Its so refreshing to come across some of them who do listen to the customer and have her interest in mind rather than their sales targets! *clap* *clap*

  17. aweeeesome post KK. You covered just about everything. Finding it a a bit embarrassing seeing my pics in the post. 😛 anyway, I think you covered just about everything. and Oh i cant agree about the hubby thing. In my case I have been situations ‘ buy all lipsticks’ . 😐 I am both complaining and not complaining as well. 😛 Men will never understand the fun of picking up that perfect thing …we put out heart in finding that right product. 😀 so going to follow your carry your brush with your tip. truely awesome. 🙂

    1. How awesome would be if my guy tells me to buy it all 😀 I should put sanjeevji as an example up :P:P Or may be he could train our guys 😛 hehehhe *haan ji*

    2. *thankyou* Rati! Glad you liked the post! Yes, the search for the perfect shade of pink or red or a blush – there is so much fun in that! But you can’t complain with “Buy all lipsticks” approach either!! That would be dream for most of the Gurrls!

Totally, agree with Rashmi! Pls ask Sanjeev to do a training session for our hubbies!! *hihi* *hihi* *hihi*

  18. the first part was good but this part was fantabulous!! loved the tips and these give me more confidence on splurging on high end brands.. thanks a lot KK!!! *happydance* *puchhi*

    1. *thankyou* MAyuri! Glad you liked both the articles! Had had great fun writing them – was very excited in sharing them with you all! *happy dance* *happy dance* *happy dance*

  19. Agree on dressing *haan ji* Once I went to MAC store after office hours wearing Indian formals *hihi* fully tired and the SA had this looks on his face “can she afford??” *spank* *spank*
Great tips.. Book marking this *happy dance*

    1. *thankyou* Sowmya! Glad you liked the writeup! I keep reading so many negative experiences about MAC SAs. Wish they would train them on soft skills too!

  20. superb kk.. *clap* I feel i am confident enough to rush inside GA or Guerlain nw.. *happydance* No doubt u are a pro and knoe very well where to hop wen to and wt.. Even I feel if i read it again nagain i will get to learn few tips n techniques too.. *woot* *specs*
I am pinning and saving this post for long run.. *thankyou* kk a much needed n well written n well researched post.. *clap* *clap* worth reading post.. *clap*

  21. I try and send the kid and the dad to play at the game center *hihi* that’s how I buy time for my shopping 😀 I had my embarrassing moment not very long back when my hubby asked the SA why is it so expensive *shock* *secret* I have learnt my lesson and never took him with me to any makeup shopping ever again *nonono* Great post KK..loved it *hifive* *puchhi*

    1. LOL!!! rofl rofl rofl “Why is it so expensive”!!!! Thats a question we all want to ask but can’t!!!! Glad you liked the post PArmita!!

  22. great post KK, my hubby says u look great naturally dear (he feel he can save some bucks) when i ask him which one is good and when i show diff colors or pink and ask him which is good, he simply says all are pink whats difference (guys cant identify more colors they just know basic colors )

i vl never ask my hubby which one i should but, last time he made me to buy 3 neutral lipsticks *cry* *cry*

about dressing what ever u said is try, i dont know why MAC sa treat customers based on dressing others they dont mind, it happened to me once, one MAC sa she is not at all bothering what i am asking, but after i decided to buy 6 products she is just asking do u wanna buy all 6 *devil* i felt like what she thinks

if i want to buy foundation generally i visit sephora if that product available there as they give free sample even if i dont buy anything, so i vl check them after coming home, for lipsticks they use one tome use brushes, which u can throw after u use, so i like buying there

one thing i want to add, if ur buying in U.S check for deals, offers, promo codes online, some times u may get 20-30% off, some times gift bag which includes 6-7 deluxe samples( this will happen when u buy from product original site)

Happy shopping all, KK u did a great job

      1. yes jomol i just wanna slap her what she thinks, we just go to mall for buying makeup as well as clothes, so we need to wear dress which will be more comfortable as we need to change a lot, but based on that they cant divide customers *hunterwali*

        1. I totally agree with you sravanti and this attitude is pretty common in India, but I just ignore what they say or think…they are paid to work and might be instructed to behave they way they do, I guess must should not let some stupid SA ruin our shopping experience.

        1. I agree Sravanthi and Parmita! Its shameful behaviour. They need to be trained on soft skills. But we need to know how to circumvent them so that they are not able to affect our shopping experience. *hifive*

    1. Great points Sravanthi! My hubby is just the same – he too cannot assimilate different shades of the same colour. And this “u look great naturally” is the oldest husband con for dissuading us from buying or going to the parlour! *hunterwali* *hunterwali*

Ya, abroad, brands allow you to take home the product samples. Its not so easy in India. The SAs are extremely unwilling to share testers. If you havent bought anything – you can rest assured that samples will be refused. You need to buy something for them to even think of giving you sample and that too with great reluctance!!! I remember the MAC Store Manager (not SA) telling me again and again in a very stern voice that they donut give skincare samples – i had asked for a strobe cream sample. I felt so cheap. And this is after spending about 5K! U feel so cheap!!!

I know of these great sample bags that happen abroad – GWP with purchase of X amount, etc – the EStee Lauder group (Estee Lauder, Clinique, Bobbi Brown) do some really nice ones. But alas, they don’t reach India. *waaa* *waaa*

  23. Thanks for such an awesome post! I agree with all your points. I always prefer shopping alone. I learnt this the hard way..I would always end up with a wrong shade of foundation or a shade of lipstick which I already have! All thanks to my hubby , who would keep whining in my ear with stuff like ” how much make-up go you need??”, “I am hungry, sooo boring”.

    1. rofl rofl Hubby’s can be really irritating on the makeup floor!! (They probably think the same about us!! *hihi* *hihi* )

Im glad you liked the post Renny and found it useful!!

  24. Such useful tips! I usually tackle pushy SA’s by tagging a friend along. Then we are two against one na :P. And I totally agree about being dressed right. It has happened to me a lot of times. The problem was the mall was right behind my house and I and my roommates would just wander in during our walks. I found mac and channel to be snootiest of them all 😀

    1. Ooooooh! Thats Bad!! Everyone seems to be having a negative experience with MAC! *waiting*

“Two against one”!!!! rofl rofl rofl But good thinking

  25. Awesome post KK. Totally agree on each and every point specially the SA’s behavior towards you based on the dressing *hunterwali* . And once i went to the chanel counter to buy a foundation and my bf was lil far walkin here and there. As my purse was with him i went to him and said paise do he asked kitna i said 3k he started shouting, main nahi dera, koi 3k ka foundation leta hai kya. i said shut up, i came here to take my purse i will pay(coz i knew he woudnt) *cry*

  26. Wow!! You are a girl after my heart! I never take my hubby to my clothes/makeup shopping. He’s allowed only yo grocery shopping. *haan ji* And he likes it that way too. So, win-win. *happy dance* And I can’t agree more abt the dressing well part. *hifive* Using the testers with their brushes and lipsticks often discourages me from trying them. But will definitely follow ur tip from next time. And roaming the mall with all kinds of testers on…that’s me too. *hihi* What’s the point in getting carried away and buying a dud.
Overall a lovely post with great insights. *clap*

  27. I know – the idea of using their brushes grosses me out! Don’t know when and if it was last cleaned! Ugh!!!

I so want my husband to help me select a shade or be part of the make world since i feel so passionately about it. But its such a waste of time!! *hihi* *hihi*

Glad you liked the writeup! *puchhi*

  28. Was waiting for part 2 of the blog…

Yes taking hubby or any males for makeup shopping is bad:(

I bribe my young cousins to have patience while I do shopping.. *pompom* *pompom*

And “Avoiding swatches by SAs is very helpful” sometimes they do it so fast that I forget the names of the shades and I have picked couple of wrong foundations due to wrong brush technique.

    Very helpful post KK..

( I wok in a PSU and so avoid going to shopping directly from office, the SAs don’t get serious about me at all)

    1. *thankyou* Bhavna! Glad you liked the post! Yes, it can make shopping stressful if you’ve people breathing down your neck. Its sad, na! We shouldn’t be judged by our attire – but we so often are!
