Tom Ford Lips and Boys Lip Color Ashton Review

Hey lovely ladies,

It has been a really really long time since I have reviewed a lipstick – I mean a traditional bullet lipstick. Today’s review is on the much-raved about Tom Ford Lip and Boys Lip Colour. I have been contemplating buying one of these for the longest time – almost a year. I was keen on picking one up when they had initially launched the 25 shades as limited edition – that didn’t happen. When it got relaunched, another 25 shades were added – and it just became too confusing to shortlist a shade amongst 50 others!! And when a lipstick is priced at $36 a pop, you cannot really say, okay if I cannot shortlist it down to one, maybe I will try a couple! Nope! I did get a chance to see them in store, but at that time, I was too keen on picking up elusive eyeshadow quad in “Honeymoon” and the much-raved blush – Love Lust, to actually give lipsticks a thought.

Tom Ford Lips and Boys Lip Color Ashton Review

Since, all the shades were so pretty, I finally decided to pick a shade based on the name, rather than the actual shade! Weird? You do know that the shade names are based on names of actual people who influenced Tom Ford’s life. Quite like the Audacious Line of Lipsticks by NARS. I searched for George (Clooney), Pierce (Brosnan), Matt (Damon) in vain. Since none of the names had a connection to me, I thought let’s go by the names that have a deeper connection to the creator. So, I shortlisted Richard and Alexander. Richard is Tom Ford’s partner and Alexander is his son. Since, Alexander seemed a little too light for my complexion, so I got down to Richard. Unfortunately for me, Richard is one shade which is constantly sold out. Don’t know if the shade is so good, or people are following my logic. Anyway! Change of track – enter Ashton (Kutcher?? – not that I am a fan!!).

My Experience with Tom Ford Lips and Boys Lip Color Ashton:

In terms of packaging, the lipstick is similar to any regular Tom Ford lipstick – a deep brown cuboid case with gold detailing. It does not have a metallic closure but the cover snaps securely. It comes packaged in the typical Tom Ford deep cola cardboard box. The insignia “TF” is etched on the cap as well as the tip of the bullet itself. And it breaks your heart to see it disappear.

What is different about these lipsticks is the size. These are the size of a deluxe lipstick – not as small as a sample lipstick. A regular-sized Tom Ford Lipstick is 2.96 ml, while this is 2.07 ml, so about 2/3rd of the size of a regular lipstick. This is just my assumption but it may have been done to make the price point enticing enough for you to either try this range or to buy more than one shade considering that the company put up 50 shades to choose from. Is it good or bad? I would say definitely good because though $36 is not exactly cheap but the regular price of $54 would be even bigger to swallow. Also, the lipstick is not so small that it is likely to break in the tube – which is generally a concern with smaller size releases. Lastly, Tom Ford lipsticks are known to spoil more quickly than other lipsticks, which may have something to do with the numerous oils added to the lipstick to make it comfortable to wear and conditioning for the lips. So, having a smaller tube means you might actually finish it in time – before it spoils! And yes, smaller tube also means it is easier to throw into the evening clutch.

My Experience with Tom Ford Lips and Boys Lip Color Ashton:

Color: The shade that I picked up is an “easy to wear” neutral shade – “Ashton.” It is a medium, muted plum-my, rosy shade with a satin finish. The muteness of the shade makes it easy to wear and work with a variety of looks. This is actually the kind of shade which can be carried in your handbag and could work for a day at work/coffee date/be part of a sophisticated evening look. It is fairly versatile.

Pigmentation:  Pigmentation is fairly good for a lipstick this creamy – medium to fully opaque (in a couple of swipes). It covers all lip pigmentation easily. If you want, you can apply it more sheer by dabbing it on for a soft bruised look.

Texture:  The texture is amazing, it’s smooth, buttery, creamy, so lightweight and yet, it doesn’t sink into the fine lines of the lips, which is my issue with most satin lipsticks, the color or the product can tend to seep into the lip lines and accentuate them, but not with this one. Even with multiple swipes, the product doesn’t start bunching up or collecting in the corners. The lipstick is hydrating and has this amazing polished lustrous finish. It is supposed to have a blend of soja seed extract, Brazilian muru muru butter, and chamomilla flower oil. Your lips actually feel nourished while it is on and for a couple of hours afterwards, too. Despite the creamy texture, i did not see it bleeding or sliding around.

Lasting Power: In line with its creamy texture, the lipstick gives you about 4-5 hours of wear time max. The lipstick will transfer onto cups and spoons and straws, cheeks, etc easily. And as it does so, it will start disappearing from your lips and if you have a meal in between – it will pretty much, totally disappear. Also, it doesn’t leave much of a stain behind either. Anyone who has been reading my reviews for a while would know that lipstick transference is my pet peeve. However, I have learnt to appreciate that all lipsticks will not be long lasting and they can still have a place in your stash. However, if the Company suggests that their product is going to be long lasting, but isn’t – then i have an issue with it for sure.

Fragrance: I actually sniffed it to check this. It has a lovely vanilla fragrance – but, it is not strong or over-powering. It is not evident when you are applying it. I could smell it only because I sniffed the lipstick.

IMBB Rating:
5/5

While I enjoy this lipstick immensely, and it screams luxury – in tube and on lips – I would not say it is a need to have product, if budget is a constraint for you. It isn’t something you need to save for and buy – you would be able to get similar shades (if not the same quality of product) at lower price point. However, if you are open to this range, I would totally recommend this shade because it is so versatile.

As far as the size is concerned, to me, a $36 Tom Ford lipstick makes more sense than a $54 one – even with lesser amount of product in it. Now, if he would just release his blushes too in a slightly smaller packaging, I would be right behind that!!
