Tom Ford Traceless Stick Foundation Review

Hello everyone,

Ever since I fell in love with the Make Up For Ever HD Stick Foundation (which was my top pick for favorite foundation in 2015), I was on the hunt for another stick foundation to try and compare it to. Tom Ford makeup line is one the most luxurious out there and this brand has some of the most coveted products.  This review will be on the Tom Ford Traceless Stick Foundation in the shade “Fawn.”

My Experience with Tom Ford Traceless Stick Foundation:

Packaging:  This foundation comes in a retractable stick format. The outer case is very sturdy yet lightweight. Since there is generous quantity provided of 15 gm (compared to the MUFE version which is 12.5 gm), the tube is also bigger and fatter. I love the portability and travel friendliness of stick foundations vs liquid foundations, which is true for this product as well.

Texture and Blend-ability:  This is a very creamy foundation. It has a very emollient quality to it hence applying and blending it into the skin is very easy. I just swipe it once on the forehead and dab on the nose and chin, and then blend it out with my trusted “Beauty Blender” to get a beautiful, even, and streak-free finish every time. Though I will say that in comparison, my MUFE stick foundation is a tad bit creamier in application, but not necessarily more emollient/hydrating on the skin as it settles down.

Shade and Finish:  The shade I have is “Fawn,” which does match my MAC NW 22-25 skin quite well.  This foundation has more of a satin finish on the skin vs the demi-matte –satin finish of the MUFE foundation. True to its name, it is virtually traceless and undetectable as makeup on the skin with ultra-natural looking radiant/glow-y finish. For those who prefer matte look to the skin, you may need to add a touch of powder.

Coverage:  This foundation offers medium coverage in one layer, but it is easy to build it up to borderline full with a second layer. Recently, I have been having some breakouts and redness on my skin which this foundation was not able to cover altogether hence I did need to add some concealer on problem areas. Even with the good amount of coverage this foundation offers, it does not look cakey or heavy on the skin.

Look and Feel on the skin:  This foundation is very creamy and quite hydrating on its own. Even without a moisturizer or a primer underneath, it left my dry skin feeling very comfortable. It does not sink into my pores or highlight my fine lines. I do think those who have oily skin might find this foundation too hydrating for their liking.

Staying Power:  The staying power of this foundation is very good. It does develop more shine as the day progresses. My skin starts to look dewy by 5-6 hours, but for some reason, I quite like the finish even then because even with the shine, I don’t look oily or like a grease ball.  Even if I want to get rid of the dewy finish, a light blotting and powder take care of it easily. Even with the level of shine it gets to, it still maintains its even coverage with little fading and little breakdown of the foundation. Still, I would say this is not an ideal summer foundation but would be perfect for dry/cold months.

For oily skin, this might be an issue, especially if you are thinking about using this foundation during the warmer months. You might find this too hydrating and too shiny, requiring a lot of touchups. I do think this foundation will be more loved by dry skin beauties.

Overall, I absolutely love this foundation. It has great coverage, has beautiful glow-y finish, and is very rich and hydrating, which is a boon for my dry skin.

Would I say this is better than the MUFE stick foundation? Not necessarily, I do find both to be very similar in performance, almost interchangeable, except for a few key differences. Firstly, the difference is price and then the size of the foundation is another major. I do find the MUFE version to be more long wearing (without giving as much shine as the TF by the end of the day), hence MUFE would still be my pick to go with me on my travels or vacations due to less need for constant touch-ups, but for everyday wear, I would gravitate towards this Tom Ford stick.

Pros of Tom Ford Traceless Stick Foundation:

  • Lightweight on the skin.
  • Medium to buildable full coverage.
  • Easy to blend.
  • Beautiful glowy satin finish on the skin.
  • Does not sink into pores or fine lines.
  • Does not accentuate dryness or dry patches.
  • Keeps my dry skin very comfortable even without addition of a moisturizer.
  • Long wearing.

Cons of Tom Ford Traceless Stick Foundation:

  • Not ideal for oily skin.
  • Not ideal for very hot, humid climate.
  • Does develop lot of shine as the day progresses. Touch-up is required to keep the shine away.
