Toni and Guy Twist-It Curl Balm Review

Hello everyone!

Having a mane of curly/wavy hair means being on the constant lookout for products that can tame the frizz and keep the curls from turning into a messy mop! During one of my random shopping excursions to the Lifestyle store, I found Toni and Guy Twist-It Curl Balm on a massive discount. The terms “Toni & Guy”, “Curl Balm” and “discount” were enough for me to bring it home.  Only my curly/wavy-haired sisters at IMBB would understand that feeling of anticipation one gets while trying a new hair product, read on to find out whether this curl balm gave me the hair of my dreams, or did it just turn out to be another passable styling product.

Aqua, Cetyl alcohol, VP/VA copolymer, Glycerin, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane, Glyceryl stearate, PEG-100 stearate, Sodium polyacrylate, Phenoxyethanol, Parfum, Methylparaben, Dipropylene glycol, PEG-90M, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Butylphenyl methylpropional, Hydroxyisohexyl 3-cyclohexenecarboxaldehyde, Isobutylparaben, Propylparaben, Hydroxycitronellal, Linalool.

My Take on Toni and Guy Twist-It Curl Balm:

The packaging is one of the major factors that drew me into buying this product. It’s an extremely sturdy, chubby, translucent plastic bottle with the text in hot-pink. The pump dispenser is super cool and super smooth; one can totally control the amount of product being dispensed. The cap shuts with an assuring click, rendering the bottle safe for carrying around during travels.  Coming to the consistency, it is a white creamy-gel that spreads easily on damp hair, without leaving the palms sticky or greasy.  I am quite fond of the perfume-y fragrance that lingers for a while before fading away, but some of you might find it undesirable.

Toni Curl Balm

Performance-wise, I would say it’s a pretty average product. Having used countless products in the past to tame my semi-curly-semi-wavy hair, I have made peace with the fact that no product is going to give me shampoo-model hair unless I torture it with loads of heat and this product is no different. If I don’t heat-style my hair after applying this curl balm, it just takes the natural movement out of my hair and makes it look dull and matte. When I do style my hair after applying this balm, I do not get anything that I wouldn’t have got even if I hadn’t used this product. The amount of balm to be used needs to be regulated according to the length and volume of hair since using too much would leave the hair greasy and mucky.

Toni Curl Balm 4

The only saving grace of this product is that it provides a tiny bit of longevity to my styled hair and since I have spent money on it, I like to believe that it somehow protects my hair by acting like a physical barrier between my hair and the hot air of the styler :p

Pros of Toni and Guy Twist-It Curl Balm:

  • Helps hold the styled curls in place for a little longer than it would on its own.
  • Acts as a mild heat protectant for hair.
  • Packaging is adorable, convenient pump dispenser.
  • Product consistency is good, spreads evenly through damp hair.
  • Pleasant fragrance.

Cons of Toni and Guy Twist-It Curl Balm:

  • Does not stand up to its claim of defining the curls. I see no obvious difference in the texture of my hair after using it.
  • Makes the hair look dull and matted if hair is not styled after applying this balm.
  • Using too much product makes the hair greasy.

Do I Recommend Toni and Guy Twist-It Curl Balm?

Toni and Guy Twist-It Curl Balm is definitely not a must-buy, as is quite evident from my review.  My advice would be to skip this product in favor of other more effective ones available in the market.

  1. esha… try tresseme.. it works wonderfully to tame the frizz and leaves them quite manageable… *specs*

    1. I use shampoo and conditioner from tresemme only, sahiba! 😀
it has made my hair so much better! *happydance*

  2. Esha, yep I totally understand what you said. I have 3b curls. I try innumerable hair products trying to keep the frizz at bay. Even got the Japanese straightening done once and then got my hair relaxed the other time. But those were temporary solutions and required a lot of maintenance. Now got all the chemically treated hair chopped off. I hate to wear it natural (all spiral-y) and so brush it!! So the frizz comes back. I am afraid of using the heat tools daily but do get the occasional flat ironing done. I feel there’s still not enough resources/guidance on the net ( atleast in India) about curly hair. No awareness as such. Whew. Thanks for allowing me to rant.

How do you wear your hair? Natual or do you brush it?

    1. dear tanvi,

I mostly leave my hair natural and heat style them only on special occasions. And i’m really averse to getting my hair chemically treated because leaving the frizz aside, I quite like my wavy-curly (somewhere between 2A and 2B) hair.
For your 3B curls you might want to try co-washing them (there’s an article here on IMBB titled “hair care routine for curly hair” by Samantha)

  3. Esha, I read all of Samantha’s posts, hi hi. I co wash the hair and follow all tips and tricks from naturally curly and youtube videos for curly hair. And as a result my hair is much more manageable than before. Touchwood. *haan ji* *haan ji*

Oh and forgot to mention, your nail paint looks nice and summery. *nails*

  4. awww it does not sounds that great esha!! Why dont you give kerastase range a try. It is really nice. I use the serum for my dry hair but I think there are 3-4 variations and you can pick the one that suits you. :)) Good review. 🙂

  5. thank you, rati. Yes, i think i’m going to pick up the kerastase elixir next….have had my eyes on it since forever! *chudail*

  6. Hey Esha 🙂 I too have curly hair, but my hair has hardly any tangles, and it’s normally not dry at all, and the curls are defined pretty good with regular conditioner. And I don’t even remember the last time I used heat on my hair!
Have you tried applying product to freshly washed hair, and then just letting it be till it dries fully, without brushing it? That’s what I do, and a wash-n-go is my best friend when it comes to my hair, really.
For the past few months, I haven’t been able to get silicone-free conditioners where I live, so I don’t co-wash much now, and the only difference I can see from when I used to only co-wash is that my hair is a bit dry now, whereas normally it was not dry at all.
So yeah, I advocate product, wash-n-go’s and throwing away the brush! 😀
And I have hardly any frizz. The only time I get a bit of frizz is if I travel and the wind blows my hair into a mess. So give this a try if you haven’t already; it might be worth a shot 🙂
And God, your nails are beautiful! Did you do the ombre effect yourself? I really like the colors you’ve used. 🙂
