Trader’s Joe Spa Face Wash with Tea Tree Oil Review

Ah, makeup snobs, we all know them. The kind of people who swear they will never touch a drugstore product, no matter how much it has been raved about or how great the quality. Ain’t nothing wrong with that, but I’m often at loss as to how to classify these people. Are they just blessed with sophisticated taste? Or are they, ultimately, suckers for buying into clever marketing? Whatever they are, they certainly make the world an interesting place. I like to think like I have struck a balance – I enjoy a little luxury now and then, but don’t swear by only department stores products. I did surprise myself when I picked up Trader Joe’s face wash. Trader Joe’s is a grocery store that makes its own line of beauty products. As weird as it sounds, I picked it up and tried it and here are my thoughts about it!

Trader’s Joe Spa Face Wash with Tea Tree Oil

Product Description:

According to Trader Joes, “tea tree oil, awapuhi, orange peel and lavender make this face wash strong yet gentle, refreshing without being astringent, as rejuvenating for skin as a day at the spa. It soothingly cleans all skin types and leaves your skin feeling smooth and silky. Ahhhhhh…”

My Experience with Trader’s Joe Spa Face Wash with Tea Tree Oil:

I usually buy my aloe vera gel and tea tree oil from Trader Joe’s and decided to give their cleanser a shot. About 4-5 months back, I stopped using my Neutrogena Acne-Free Wash because it was drying out my skin and not doing a great job anymore at keeping acne away. As you can see, the packaging of the product is very basic, so what really drew me to it was the tea tree oil (a proven acne-fighting ingredient) and the fact that it all was all natural, sulphate-free product. All the oils listed in the ingredients list were a little scary, since my goal was to stop breaking out, but I decided to take a chance on it. And, boy, am I glad I did!

So the first two things you’ll notice about this product are – its odd texture and smell. If you can get over those two aspects of it, you will really like it. The face wash has a really strong herbal smell. It basically smells exactly like tea tree oil. If you’re someone who is sensitive to the smell of tea tree oil, you most likely will not be able to use this product. It disappears pretty quickly, so if you can bear it for the first 5-10 minutes, you’re good.  I have been using tea tree oil on and off for years now and actually quite like the smell.  The second thing is the texture. This face wash is really watery and it takes some time to get used to finding what amount is perfect for use. Over time, I realized that a teeny-tiny amount is enough to get a deep clean. One bottle will last you over two months, even if you use it two times a day.

Something I really like about this face wash is that it really is a one-step clean product. It gets rid of makeup, the day’s dirt and goes deep into the pores to get oil out. I usually take eye makeup out with almond oil, but on days I’m lazy and skip that step, this product gets rid of all my eye makeup, even mascara. It leaves my face feeling very, almost squeaky, clean. The one drawback is that because this is a castile soap, it takes a while to rinse if off. While this does foam well, it leaves a slippery feeling behind which needs to be rinsed off with lots of water. It also leaves my skin a little bit on the dryer side. Overall, it’s not drying, but immediately after it does leave skin feeling a little dry.

The best part about this product is that it works immediately to stop acne and any breakouts heal faster when you use it. I was going through a really bad phase of breakouts when I started using this and soon after I immediately saw a difference. I break out far less often now and those times when I do, it really speeds up healing time. I had stopped using this for about two weeks in the middle and my skin looked a lot worse during that time.  Now, I have promised myself that this is a permanent part of my cleansing routine 😛

Overall, this is a great cleanser for oily, combination and acne-prone skin. It may be too drying for people with dry skin. If you have acne issues, I would recommend you give this a shot, you will not be disappointed. Its availability (or lack thereof) is its main drawback; you only get it at Trader Joe’s stores and large online retailers. But given the price, which is really low for the quality of the product, and its benefits, I think it’s definitely worth the price of shipping. This product is also sulphate and paraben free and made of all natural ingredients – which makes it all the more awesome!

Pros of Trader’s Joe Spa Face Wash with Tea Tree Oil:

  • Cleans deep.
  • Get rids all all traces of makeup.
  • Clears breakouts.
  • Low price for really good quality.
  • Paraben and sulphate free.
  • All natural ingredients.

Cons of Trader’s Joe Spa Face Wash with Tea Tree Oil:

  • Availability.
  • May be too drying for people with dry skin.
  • The pump splatters the product all over.
