ULTA Contour Kit Review

By Atika Anjum

Kim Kardashian contoured the whole world with her beautifully sculpted cheeks and nose. And now thanks to the rising number of Instagram makeup artists, contouring has become a part of everyday makeup routine for everyone. I have also been incorporating contouring and highlighting in my everyday routine, thanks to all the new products being launched, especially for contouring.

ULTA Contour Kit

Ulta is a go-to store for many girls like me and during my last trip, I spotted the Ulta Contour kit. I usually use powder contours and highlights after contouring with my Kryolan Cream Contour Kit. I was really excited to try the Ulta kit as an everyday light contouring kit and for more dramatic contouring occasions too.

The packaging of the contour kit is really good and also acts like a contour and highlight guideline for rookies. The book type packaging closes like a magnetic purse and is easier to handle than the regular “open-me” type of boxes. Apparently, the shades on the right are for pale-skinned beauties and the left one is for the dark-skinned beauties.

However, the left side did not show up on me as much even though I am fair. A bit of mix and match is what works the best if you are using the Ulta Contour kit.

This contouring kit has a total of six shades – two illuminators/highlighters and four contouring shades. The two illuminators are a shade of gold and pink, both to cater the golden glow as well as the rosy glow. The bronzer shades are completely matte with not an ounce of shimmer in them. They are named in the following order – Warmth, Golden, Bombshell and Goddess Bronzer.

I was kinda disappointed after using it, as it is not very pigmented, a lot of product is used to highlight as well as contour for everyday use. For more dramatic looks, the product did not pop as much as I expected on my Indian fair skin, it didn’t show that well on my sister who is wheatish in complexion. I really hope the next version is more pigmented in terms of contour shades; although the highlighters are really good at illuminating.  At the same time, we can’t be expecting more from Ulta at the cheap price they are offering this kit at 🙂

Pros of ULTA Contour Kit:

  • The packaging is good and also shows how to contour and highlight.
  • The highlighters are really good and great for everyday use with very less shimmer.
  • The book type packaging is easy to handle.
  • Affordable and retails around $15-$18 when compared to Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit, which is priced at around $40.

Cons of ULTA Contour Kit:

  • Not as good as its other counterparts like ABH.
  • Not pigmented enough.
  • A lot of product is required for dramatic effect.
  • Suitable only for fair skin tones as the colors don’t show up well on dark wheatish tones.
  • The bronzers are talc like in consistency, hence not easily blendable.

I will be recommending this to people who are on the fairer side and are on a lookout for a product that can be used for contouring and highlighting on an everyday basis. I do not recommend this to my dusky friends, as individual illuminators and bronzers will work best for them.
