5 Unusual Skincare Tips That Dermatologists Recommend

Hi everyone,

Today’s post is about a few skincare tips that are probably going to take you by surprise. We’ve been told the same things about skincare over and over again and we think we know it all—take off your makeup, drink enough water, hydrate, etc. Of course, those things are still important, but here is a list of five more skincare tips that are certainly uncommon and unusual, but they’re actually recommended by renowned dermatologists. Let’s take a look at what these unusual but effective skincare tips are.

Dermatologists recommend

1. Wear more makeup:

Yes, this doesn’t really sound like a ‘skincare’ tip, but it actually is! As we go about our day in the city, our skin encounters a fair bit of dust and pollution, in addition to being exposed to the harmful rays of the sun. Of course, it is extremely important to moisturize your skin well and layer the sunscreen on, but it’s also a good idea to wear a reasonable layer of makeup. So bring on that heavy-coverage foundation! What this will do is that it will form another barrier against the sun, dust and pollution and will help protect your skin. Of course, never forget to take the makeup off once you get home!

2. Drink less water:

This may come as a shocker, but the truth is that there is little reason to believe in the 8-glasses-a-day water dictum. Not only do we not have enough scientific evidence to support that recommendation, but also dermatologists claim that if you drink too much water, you’re actually losing vital minerals from your body. Of course, it is still important to drink a fair amount of water throughout the day to stay hydrated, but it’s a good idea to substitute the water with hydrating (and seasonal) fruits and veggies every now and then, as this will give your body the necessary fibre as well as hydration, without making you lose the vital minerals.

3. Use an oil beneath your moisturizer:

If you thought that facial oils were just for your night-time skincare routine, then think again. Dermatologists recommend that if you wear a few drops of oil (or a thin layer) beneath your moisturizer (both during the day and at night), then this will act as the perfect base for your moisturizer to sink in faster, better and work more efficiently. Of course, if you have acne-prone skin, then you could skip this step or only use an oil that works for your skin type and doesn’t break you out.

4. Treat your breakouts with aspirin:

You may or may not have heard this one before, but it’s time to ditch the toothpaste treatment for spots in favour of this one. If you see a zit on your face, then all you need to do is crush an aspirin tablet and add a little bit of water to it to form a paste. Apply this paste to the affected area to reduce the inflammation and treat the spot.

5. Rethink the rotis and breads in your diet:

We all know that high sugar content in the diet is really bad not only for the skin but also for our overall health and well being. However, dermatologists point out that when we eat a reasonable amount of grains in our diet (such as roti/chappati, rice, bread, etc.), the body breaks it down as sugar, which essentially has the same effect on our skin, making it look dull and tired. Instead of these cereals and grains, try incorporating more fruits, veggies and nuts in your diet and see the difference!
