Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion – Eden Review

Hello Ladies!

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion Eden Review

“Urban Decay Primer Potion” if these 4 words do not get an eye makeup lover excited, I don’t know what else will! It is the HG primer for many beauties on the blogosphere, but that is usually the original version which has already been reviewed here.  So, I will review another shade or variant of the UDPP – Eden. The main difference between Eden and the original version is that Eden is opaque on drying and it is completely matte. More information follows:

UDPP Eden 02

Packaging:

It’s a very cute genie bottle, which comes packed in a suede/velvet purple box, that is enclosed in a beautiful plastic wrapper. Some product information, ingredients, weight are all mentioned on this wrapper. It is copper colored with purple flowers, butterflies, etc., on it and is very pretty to look at, but I store the bottle as it is and have discarded all the other wrapping.  The bottle itself is so beautiful that I don’t feel the need for any other stuff.

The wand is a bent doe-foot applicator. Customers were not satisfied at all with the shape of this bottle, as the product that gets accumulated in the various curves of the bottle would not be reachable. Even as a best applicator, it still did not allow 100% usage of the product. So, UD has launched these in a new squeeze tube packaging that comes with a nozzle. Since I ordered mine long back, I have the old packaging, but I really recommend anyone to purchase only the squeeze tubes henceforth.  Even for these genie bottles, various tutorials on the blogosphere can guide you easily about cutting open the bottle and getting the entire product out.

The product is a very thick, matte, opaque, light yellow cream. A tiny amount of this potion goes a long way. The amount that you see on the image above is a lot for both eyes, you would need only half that amount. When blending it out, you have to be swift, or the potion starts to settle in. When blending, it will also get into all the lines and create a smooth surface. In the image below, you can see that when blended properly, it fills the gaps and lines, but where it is not so blended, since it is thick, the lines will show up. So, you have to carefully blend this out.

In the following image, I took just the tiniest dab of the product and blended it out as much as I could. The product does not disappear, it leaves a yellow/white color behind. On fair skinned girls, this will work as a concealer, but on medium to deeper skinned girls, it can look very ashy. On me, personally, I can’t wear it as a concelaler, highlighter or eyeshadow, it’s too light for me. So, I just make sure I use a tiny amount of product, blend it out as much as I can and then place shadow over it.  Once the shadow is applied, the “ashiness” completely disappears.

UDPP Eden 08

Coming to how it works with eyeshadow over it, this is a must have for anyone who wants their matte eyeshadows to remain matte. It intensifies the colors, makes it truly long lasting, the color just stays on and on and on without smudging till you decide to take it off; the eyeshaodw never creases. This is a beauty of a product! No wonder it is one of the most popular primers today.

In the swatches, I hope you can see that a dark color (blue) becomes much more vibrant, a very sheer color (grey) looks more pigmented, and a color with a pink shimmer and white base looks mostly white, as this tends to subdue the frostiness of eyeshadows. It does not completely mattify, but softens the effect of shimmer/frost without totally eliminating it.

In the following image, I have applied UDPP Eden on the left side and ELF Mineral Eyeshadow Primer on the right. I applied the same red matte eyeshadow on both of them. On the ELF primer, I hope you can make out the shine that the primer adds to the product but with UDPP the effect is not so “shiny.” So, when using matte colors, I use this primer exclusively.

Pros of Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion – Eden:

  • True to its claims, makes eyeshadow vibrant, pigmented, long lasting, crease free.
  • The sheerest or cheapest in quality eyeshadow also looks beautiful with this.
  • The potion dries to a matte finish.
  • Retains the matte effect of true matte eyeshadows.
  • Mattifies frosty/shimmery shades.
  • Does not budge even if worn for over 12 hours (for my normal lids).
  • Oily lids will love this too!
  • A little goes a long way, the product will last long.
  • Fair skin girls can use it as an eyeshadow or concealer as well, as it works well in hiding lines too.
  • Cute packaging.
  • They have released an easier-to-use squeeze tube version of this product.

Cons of Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion – Eden:

  • This older bottle will have to be cut up to utilize all the product (but anyway a new version is available in the market). Most sites offering this in India, still stock the older packaging.
  • Available only online in India.
  • The product does not dry to an invisible finish; it has to be blended out a lot.
  • Tends to look ashy on deeper skin, needs to be blended out very well.
  • Expensive.

Do I Recommend/Will I Repurchase Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion – Eden?

I think the original version of UDPP is more versatile, Eden has specific usages, if those appeal to you, then go for it, you will not regret the purchase at all. If you wear a lot of matte colors, then this should compliment your look more. If you are deep skinned and do not like spending a lot of time on blending out the base, then you will not like this product a lot, but if you are the patient type, then I recommend it to you. Fair skinned girls will enjoy this much more. This bottle is going to last me a long time, but I rather purchase the original version next time.

IMBB Rating:

4/5 (-1 for all the cons listed.)

I hope this was helpful for you ladies.

Take care and Happy Makeuping!
