URBAN DECAY PRIMER POTION Review
If you have ever watched those makeup videos on YouTube or haunt beauty blogs frequently, chances are that you have heard the word “Urban Decay Primer Potion” quite often. I had never heard of this before I watched YouTube videos. Heck, I didn’t even know that primers existed. (I had only heard this term with respect to painting. 🙂 ) Hearing literally zillions of people rave about this magic potion got me interested. So, what is Urban Decay Primer Potion?

My Take on the product
I have super oily lids. My lids look shiny just half hour into my fresh makeup face. 🙁 Eyeshadow would crease like hell and disappear within an hour after application. I completely lost interest in eye shadows because of this. But after hearing and reading so many “ooohs” and “aahs”, I finally gave into the temptation and tried this product. Since I didn’t want to spend so much on something that I didn’t know if I’d like, I got a travel size version of UDPP along with urban decay show pony eyeshadow palette and smaller version of the 24X7 pencil in zero as a set. Score! That way, I got try to a lot more items for a better price. Let me tell you, there is a reason why this product has a cult following. The eyeshadow primer potion itself looks like a beige colored thin lotion. It feels extremely silky to the touch. I take a tiny bit and blend it on the upper lid with my index finger. On blending, the potion becomes invisible and disappears into the skin almost immediately. I take whatever is remaining on my finger and spread on the corner of my eyes and near my lower lash line. And then go ahead and apply your eyeshadow as you normally would. One thing you have to watch out is that the UDPP literally grabs the eyeshadow onto the lids like a magnet (It’s true☺). You almost have no chance for mistakes. Also you need to blend out the shadow really really well to avoid sharp edges. Even crappy eye shadows look a whole lot vibrant when worn over the UDPP. The shadow stays put for 8 long hours (That’s the longest I have worn it). No creasing whatsoever! How awesome is that? Sometimes when I am applying a super smudgy eye pencil on my upper lash line, I apply UDPP to prevent smudging. Btw, I rarely wear eye shadows, only for special occasions. Hence even this tiny bottle has almost lasted me a year! (GASP!)
Here is a swatch of a rather OKish Revlon eye shadow. The one on the left is without UDPP and the obviously vibrant one on the right is with the UDPP.
Initially Urban Decay Primer Potion used to come with a straight wand with a doe tip applicator. After a lot of buzz about how much product was getting wasted, urban decay changed the wand to have a bent shape at the end. They claimed that, that way the wand will be able to reach out to the crevices and grab the entire hidden product. But, BUT, just today I got a mail from sephora saying that Urban Decay is releasing a pro size which is in a squeeze tube format. Finally! I am sure all Urban Decay Primer Potion junkies will be jumping up and down! ☺
Pros of Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion
- Urban decay primer potion is colorless once you blend into the skin. Unlike MAC paint pots, this would not clash with your eye shadow color.
- Eyeshadow lasts so much longer and the color stays vibrant even after a long tiring days.
- Completely eliminates oiliness from the eyelids and prevents creasing.
- The packaging is kinda cute. It’s like a genie bottle. 🙂
- You only need a teeny tiny bit for each eye. That way this one will last you a long time even if you use it every single day.
Cons of Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion
- It’s quite expensive. At 18$ a pop it’s quite a luxury item.
- Even though packaging look cute. It’s kinda stupid. See the shape of the bottle? The wand does not go and reach the bottom. Hence a lot of product gets wasted in the crevices. (If you go and Google a bit about this, you’ll see a lot of tutorials on how cut up the bottle and scoop leftover contents and people say it’s quite a bit!)
Verdict
Are you an eye shadow person? If yes, you NEED this. If not (like me) you can skip this and explore cheaper alternatives.

Jane I saw this at Sephora and totally totally liked it. They way it goes transparent was something that impressed me the most. But thinking how much product is still left in my paint pot I let it go. 🙂
Loved the review, always wanted to read it. 😛
Rati…   …you know who’s getting this soon
Ooops…sorry forgot to thank Jane…Thanks a bunch Jane 😀
Hehe you are welcome radhika 🙂
:-* :-*
Nars…which blush would work better for a darker skinned person? And goodness…why do they have such scandalous unprintable names for their blushes??? And yes, I know this is a totally unrelated topic…thank you 😀
There’s are blushes called exhibit a, Mata Hari and Taos. They look great on dusky skin tones. 🙂
ummm check Dolce Vita also. 😛
Ya I saw those and was wondering if those are more suitable for my skin type…somebody had recommended Taj Mahal for darker ppl 😮 ..but I don’t think I am that dark-skinned enough to carry that off…scary orange
oh taj mahal is gorgeous and plums and oranges look fab on dusky skin tones. 🙂
But honestly it’s not an easy to wear colour and also not the kinds you could wear everyday. But :(( I love the TajMahal blush.
Yeah I know Rati.there is no point having 2 primers at one time. I want to try paint pots nexttime
Price is too high !!!!!!!

Only at Sephora though?
You can make your own primer by mixing equal amount of foundation and body butter. It works the same and is much much cheaper.
But doesn’t it slip on eyes, Marya?
I mean both foundation and body butter oily things no?
Nice review Jane..Me wantss.
The bottle thingie has been on the net for a while no? Guess thats why they have launched the new squeeze tube 🙂
Wow, thanks for this review Jane! I guess I am really in the minority here…
The regular UDPP is a  for me. I depotted mine and it completely dried out! How unfortunate right? Even before that, it was a pain to blend my shadows…and my eyelids looked grey with it on! LOL
I really like Sin though, I got it free with my Get Baked palette and it looks gorgeous both under shadow and by itself. I’m currently using TFSI, which will take me years to finish. I’ll probably grab Sin after that.
BEST PRODUCT EVER!!! Like no joke! I am loving this with all my eyshadows, expensive or cheap!
