How to use Makeup Along With Sunscreen

Hi everyone,

It is a well-established fact that wearing sunscreen every single day is one of the most important things that we can do to keep our skin healthy. The regular use of sunscreen not only prevents tanning and sunburn, but it also helps fight against signs of premature skin aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles and spots, and some kinds of skin cancer. One of the most common challenges that people face is the use of sunscreen along with makeup. It is surely tricky to figure out how and what type of sunscreen works best with makeup. We also know very well that it is essential to reapply sunscreen every couple of hours to make sure that it is effective. When you have a full face of makeup on, how exactly do you reapply the sunscreen without disturbing the makeup?

In this post, I’m going to take you through some useful tips and tricks on how to use makeup along with sunscreen.

1. Apply your sunscreen after your moisturizer:

Apply your sunscreen once you have cleansed and moisturized your face. Make sure to pick a sunscreen formula that offers broad-spectrum UV protection. If your sunscreen leaves your skin feeling too dry, flaky or leaves a whitish cast on your face, you can smooth things out with some more moisturizer or with a primer.
Recommendation: Kiehl’s Ultra Light Daily UV Defense Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 PA+++

2. Apply your makeup as usual on top of the sunscreen:

Sunscreen is best applied after moisturizer and before makeup. Once the sunscreen has been applied to the skin, you can follow it up with your makeup as usual.

3. Use makeup products that contain SPF:

When choosing the makeup products to layer over your sunscreen, you should look out for products that contain SPF. This will enhance the effectiveness of your sunscreen. Mineral makeup that contains SPF is another great option.
Recommendation: Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup Foundation with SPF

4. You can also use a tinted sunscreen:

If you want to skip the regular makeup, then using a tinted product, such as a tinted moisturizer, BB cream or CC cream, is a great alternative. This will give you the coverage as well as the added sun protection.
Recommendation: Lotus Herbals 3-in-1 Matte Look Daily Sunblock SPF 40

5. Use a powder sunscreen for touchups:

Here comes the most important bit. Once you have your makeup on and you’re already out and about, then how do you touch up your sunscreen on the go without disturbing your makeup? The best way to do it is by using a powder sunscreen. Powder sunscreen is just as effective as a cream or lotion based sunscreen, and it can be applied to your face on top of your makeup using a powder brush or a puff. This will disturb your makeup the least, while still boosting the sun protection.
Recommendation: Colorescience Sunforgettable Loose Mineral Sunscreen Brush Broad Spectrum SPF 50

6. Carry a compact with SPF for makeup touchups:

Once you have applied the powder sunscreen, you may want to go over your makeup once more. For this purpose, it is best to use a powder foundation compact or a regular powder compact. This will give you the little bit of additional coverage that you will need on top of the sunscreen. If this powder compact contains SPF, then that’s even better.
Recommendation: Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay In Place Powder With SPF 10

7. Reapply the sunscreen only when required:

Another important thing to keep in mind is that once you have applied your regular sunscreen and makeup that contains SPF, you’re good to go for at least 4-5 hours unless you are sweating profusely or swimming. If you’re not doing any of those things that are literally washing off your sunscreen, you may not necessarily need to reapply it.
