Velaterapia – Crazy Brazilian Technique to Tackle Split Ends Without a Haircut!

By Aditya M.

Hello everyone,

Brazil is known for a lot of their hair care trends and beauty regimens; after all, they are the ones who created keratin treatments as well as Brazilian waxes. They’re also testing the waters in hair lightening products, but this trend for tackling split ends seems a little crazy to me!

We all know how much it is a struggle to trim off split ends when we really just want to grow out our hair, but now stylists have confirmed that candle cutting could be a much better option. Candle cutting provides a way to grow out your hair while also getting rid of split ends.

This trend originated in ancient Brazil (it is called velaterapia in Brazil). It was in an old Brazilian culture that women were burning off their dead ends with candle sticks. Many Hollywood celebrities swear by candle cutting as how it keeps their hair healthy as well as long. It was made popular by Victoria’s Secret supermodel, Alessandra Ambrosio. Not so many amateur stylists will offer this service as it needs to be done very carefully by someone who has already perfected the craft of velaterapia. Women across the world are relying on this candle cutting technique as a way to get rid of split ends without having to compromise their hair length.

The “Candle Cutting method” can take anywhere between one to two hours. The hair is first covered in thin wax which prevents your hair from going up into flames. Then, the stylist will take sections of hair and twist it until they see the dead ends and then they slowly move a candle up and down the twisted section. This burns off the dry ends while the hydrated and healthy ends remain intact.

This method is then repeated throughout your hair until all your split ends are burned off. The sections aren’t very thick, mostly one inch each. Since the hair is twisted, only the split ends are burned off, so you won’t even know much of a difference in length. This technique is usually followed by a deep conditioning treatment so that the ends will stay moisturized and won’t become brittle.

Candle cutting should be repeated every two to three months in order to fully combat split ends as well as to maintain your hair length.

This is a great option for women who would like to grow out their hair and retain their length while also getting rid of their split ends. This Brazilian treatment sounds like a wonderful option if performed by a certified professional.
Although Alessandra Ambrosio has lovely hair (she looks flawless all the time!) and this treatment seems very promising, I think I will be passing up on this technique as I’m not so adventurous.

Note: Please do not attempt this at home. This can be very dangerous if not done by a professional and could result in serious injuries to you and your hair. It should only be carefully done by a trained professional at a salon with proper amenities.
