Vichy Setting Powder Review

Earlier on I read the reviews on finishing powders by Rati and Aarthi, and for those of you who haven’t yet read it I suggest you do, before picking one as they are great reviews. So I thought it would be a good idea to review the one I wear too, as I know many people do like to use some kind of powder over their foundation and really the two products almost go hand in hand with each other when you have comb/oily skin like mine. So here is that review! Just for those who don’t know, I discovered Vichy Make-Up after a friend recommended it to me. Their makeup line is composed of Concealer – Cover Cream, Corrective Foundation and Setting powder.

It’s called Dermablend and is target for people with severe skin concerns.

I have also used the foundation but for review purposes I will be talking about the setting powder.

Vichy says about the product:

Skin Type : Non-comedogenic. Non-acnegenic. Tested on sensitive skin. Used by dermatologists and plastic surgeons.

Action :DERMABLEND™ Setting Powder teinforces the hold of DERMABLEND™ Corrective Foundation for 16 hours. Natural matt finish.

Result : Applied over DERMABLEND™ High Coverage Corrective Foundation, the Setting Powder reinforces its hold for 16 hours. Resists perspiration, bathing and rubbing.

Container : 28g pot

As we can see, this is a product target for people with skin problems that sometimes a regular drugstore brand might not provide, be it the coverage or shade.

In my Vichy Setting powder kit, I got the powder pot, one powder puff and also a sort of mini guide on how to better use it. The mini guide we can see below, brings the simplified way of getting the look, here is what it says:

Vichy Setting Powder
Vichy Setting Powder

Indications: Vitiligo, angioma, couperose, rosacea, acne, dark circles, pigmentation disorders, post operation and other scars or burns. This product also as the foundations can be used on small parts of the body as well.

  • 1. Cover. High Coverage Corrective Foundation
  • 2. Fix. Setting Powder. It is micro fine and reinforces the hold of the foundation for 16 hours without emphasizing any cutaneous unevenness. Its transparent when applied and does not affect the color of the chosen foundation. Withstands perspiration, bathing and rubbing.=
  • 3. Used by dermatologists and plastic surgeon
  • 4. Shades – I could find in the website only the shade Clear – white which I purchased so I do not know if they offer in other shades or if they are available.

My experience with the product:

The packaging of Vichy in general is pretty minimal. You get 28g of powder in this pot, which is quite a bit, certainly enough to last you several months at least.

The coverage is extremely sheer, and it took me some 3 buffs to get this white powder on the back of my hand to do the swatch, on my wrist I tried and it just would not show at all ☹

As with most face powders and finishing powders this Finishing Powder is there to help minimize imperfections, set your foundation, create an overall flawless look and in some cases also control shine. They are designed, unlike some traditional face powers, to look natural and feel light as air, rather than to look powdery, chalky or cakey, and feel dry or heavy on the skin. These Finishing Powders are more versatile than other face powders, as you will read about later, and they can do more than you might expect.

The Finishing Powder come in loose form, it does make them a little more messy and perhaps less practical than compact for putting in your bag to take with you so that you can touch up your make-up throughout the day. However, these are designed to be effective enough and perform well enough so that you won’t feel the need for regular touch ups, and thus won’t even need to take them with you, whether you use them under/over foundation or just on their own, they look totally natural.

You can use the setting powders in a few different ways; they’re much more versatile than ordinary face powders. Most obviously, you can use them over your foundation to set it and give you that flawless, airbrushed effect. You can also use them under your foundation; using them this way helps get rid of any shine, oil or greasiness on your skin. The website also suggests that you can mix it with your usual moisturizer to create an oil-controlling base. I haven’t given this a go myself, as I already use a shine reducing/oil controlling product apart, but it does sound like a good idea.

Alternatively, it can be used just on its own if you prefer, just as a face power to make your seem fairer without actually looking whitey. Whichever method you use, it’s easy to apply. You simply dip your brush/puff into the powder, tap off any excess, then use a circular motion to gently apply it to your skin. Always remember its best if you apply a few thinner layers of the power rather than one thicker layer, as it blends into your skin more easily and achieves a more flawless look.

I’ve been impressed with the performance of the powder. Its not the least bit chalky, powdery, flaky, heavy, drying or skin-clogging, and do give great natural looking and long lasting results. What I have found though is that I simply find that when wearing the MF Illusion foundation, I just don’t need the powders particularly!

It’s a great product though to erase makeup overdose or too much blush on your face, but I wouldn’t say its good value for money, but I wouldn’t say its bad either. You can totally survive without this product and if you just want to try it out I would say buy something you also need in the brand and get a sample for free.

In summary, I’d recommend you try a sample and check how it works for you.

Pros

  • Brings a powder puff and mini guide
  • Hypo- allergic
  • Non- comedogenic
  • Fragrance – free
  • Tested on sensitive skin
  • Talc Free
  • SPF 30
  • Makes my large pores less evident

Cons

  • 16 hours no, maybe 10 what is outstanding already but over advertizing puts anyone off.
  • The price tag (Rs: 1400)

Have you tried Vichy Setting Powder?

  2. Hey Deb,

Cool review. I actualy wanted to ask u if Vichy products are good. I have seen u writing abt it in some post ‘s comment. Im looking for a whitening product. The other day when i went to health & Glow i saw this brand. I told the SA that im looking for a whitening & Fariness product. She gave me 2 samples.. One Sunscreen and the other one is day cream with SPF in the whitening Range. OMG.. I applied it today.. The sunscreen was so oily and it was too heavy.. So i had to wipe off imm. The day cream was ok.. But still it made my face look dark after application. Totally i was disatisfied with the product. Can u please help me.. Is Vichy good for Skin whitening? Does it work?

    1. Hi Suganya, I also do not use Vichy sunscreens mostly because they do not absorb very easily. I always recommend to get a free sample first before trying it, as everyone is different.

Regarding Vichy Bi-White line i am currently using the Double Correcting Whitening Essense (which the SA told was for hiper pigmentation) so i think fairiness would be another range, but thats pretty much it, to correct the uneven tone of my face, i have been using it for around 6 months and might do a review on the product sometime soon…

I will explain how this all started…I went to Kaya skin clinic and the lady there with that Wood’s lamp from hell 😀 scared the crap out of me…saying i had melasma and bla bla       and that i needed some 20 peeling sessions to get my original skin tone back and lots of stuff…

So after reading and going to dermatologists I dicovered that what was causing the pigmentation on my face even with regular sun screen protection was actually hormonal, means, using the birth control pills what would give me a boost in the hormones and end up showing ‘stains’ on my face…. Pretty simple, just stop the pills in 2 months the skin tone is back to normal…

So what i think is that this creams will only give you back your original skin tone, after years of tanning, which might take one to think they are ‘fairer’ given the circumstances that you haven’t seen your own original tone in years, which i think is as good as it gets..

      1. I also want to buy a Vichy BIwhite…but just isnt sure if it works..my concern is years of tanning… and the result, face 5 shade darker to the rest of the body…just would like to know if you are through with your bottle no1…plz do tell your exp..

        Regards
        Bushra

  3. Excellent review Deb. I am slowly getting used to the idea of setting powder. Mostly i forget to use it only. 😛 And you got a puff with it. Me not liking. :smug: :smug: :smug:

I switch between applying powder puff and powder brush for applying setting powder but I think both work equally well. powder brush is a just a little easier to use since you don’t have to worry about applying it evenly. 🙂

I asked for it at a store but they didn’t have it. Will definitely check it out. 🙂

    1. Rati danq u :-* :-* :-* me too forget it sometimes 😀 thats why i quoted you on ‘you can survive without it’ as i have it and sometimes forget to use 😀

I agree about the brush but on this one as the pot is not open i cant dip a brush on it :silly: :silly: :silly: i just turn it on the puff and thats it…if i go sprinkle powder on the lid thennnn get the brush it takes to me long and messy and me lazy 😀 😀 😀 😀

Get a free sample i say, it comes lots of the product in the free trial also 😀  😀

  4. I came to know about the whole concept and details about setting powders now only! 😛 😛 /…The review was indeed great Deb!! And thanks for telling in so much detail about this, for make up newbies like me!! :silly: :beauty: :lashes: :cute: :shy:

      1. Thanks a ton Cali so glad you liked :-* :-* :-* :-* I like this powder because it has a SPF 30, but as with any other setting powders you can use them deliberately in lots of ways as they are very versatile…i make a point of not getting attached to brands whatsoever as there will always be good and bad in any course of life 🙂

  5. HI Deb,

Thank u so much for that explanation.. Well..I think I have the same problem. My skin is little darker (abt 2 shades) around my mouth and the chin area.. So i think its Hyper pigmentation, Im not sure though.. Never been to Dermatologist for this. The SA told me that the BI-White is for Hyper pigmentation (i was really happy to hear that). I actually dont even need a fairness range. If the dark skin around my mouth and chin goes off my whole face will look 2 shades lighter.. Im planning to buy a product range which will address my problem areas.. Do u see any changes in ur skin?

Meanwhile i will try visiting a derm and get to know what is the problem for my dark chin. I don’t take any pills… Still dunno y i have it.. 🙁

will wait for ur review on Vichy..

    1. Suganya, my friend had the same problem, around mouth and chin being darker than her face, she discovered it was because of the wax/threading that was making it darker then she just changed to use some very mild epilator cream and it has cleared since then…

I do not know if this might be the same the reason for you as well, as its always better to check with the dermatologist…

If you can get a free trial for the Essense i say really go for it, i have seen difference in my skin tone that i cant deny, and now i use it as my moisturizer till the tube lasts, but its been 6 months i wouldnt expect any serious difference till the 4th month or so :idk: :idk: :idk: :idk: :idk:

  6. Sounds good Deb!!!

But now I am even more confused.. 😕 😕 😕 I was debating between the various MAC powders and one more contender now!!!

  7. Hehehheee…Deb you are getting better and better and one day you will join us Evils on IMBB..errr…not JoLMol…join Rati and Rad 😀 Nice review..I never knew Vichy made anything like this…always associated them with lotions/creams until I read your comment some time back I think 😀

  8. I’m a huge fan of Vichy’s Dermablend range and have been using their liquid corrective foundation for my highly post-acne pigemented skin. However, for the past couple of months this particular foundation seems to be unavailable at every store I’ve tried. Even the vichy india online website says that they’re out of stock for it. Does any one know if it’s been discontinued in India? It is my HG foundation and it will really be a pity to get it shipped!! 😐 😐
