Vitamins for Acne

When your body’s nutritional needs are not met, the various organs, including the skin, do not work properly. Supplementing your diet with various vitamins makes sense in such case. A combination of vitamins will make a difference in the ability of the skin to tolerate environmental pollutants and clogged pores while at the same time not develop acne.

Vitamin A

Retinoids, derivatives of vitamin A, are used to treat acne and other skin disorders. Vitamin A in retinoids will promote cellular turnover, helping keep pores clear. It can also help you produce sebum, which helps in combating the bacteria that cause blackheads and pimples. The best sources of Vitamin A are milk, eggs, carrots and spinach.

Vitamin B

It is a multi-factorial vitamin, which means there are several vitamins which fall under this classification. The vitamins include riboflavin, pantothenic acid, niacin, and pyridoxine. Each of these plays an important role in the overall health of the body’s skin. These B complex vitamins also help to reduce and relieve stress and anxiety. This is important because research has shown that stress and anxiety will increase hormonal imbalance and trigger an acne outbreak. The best sources for these are green leafy vegetables, lean meats, eggs, avocados, fish, brewer’s yeast, whole grains and peanuts.

Vitamin E

It is also called the beauty vitamin, because it can regulate retinol levels for skin health and protects the skin from ageing caused by oxidative stress. It helps the skin fight against free radicals and enhances healing and tissue repair. It can be found in almonds, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, broccoli, wheat germ, peanuts and vegetable oils.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful anti-oxidant that helps to repair the body tissue and fight bacterial infections that cause acne. Most fruits and vegetables are sources of vitamin C; some of the richest are papaya, raw red bell pepper, strawberries, oranges, broccoli, lemon juice, kiwi, cauliflower etc.

Zinc

Zinc is one of the most important and most commonly known vitamins for acne prevention. Perhaps more than any other mineral, zinc can help prevent acne because it aids in regulating the activity of your oil glands. Foods that contain zinc include oysters, lean red meat, lima beans, chickpeas, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds etc.
