Wayne Goss Brush #19 Review

Hello gorgeous gals,

Continuing with my Wayne Goss brush reviews, this review is on brush #19. As I have mentioned in my previous reviews of brush #16 and #20, these were the newer addition to the Wayne
Goss brush line. The initial set of eye brushes – a few of which have already been reviewed on IMBB by Neha – were squirrel hair brushes. This new collection of the eye brushes #16, #17, #18 and #19 are made of goat hair instead. So, let us dig in:

My Experience with Wayne Goss Brush #19:

Quick brief on Wayne Goss and his brushes: Wayne Goss is UK based Makeup Artist who has made his presence felt on the YouTube since ages! He currently has 2 channels running on YouTube – Gossmakeupartist and Wayne Goss. He is known for his quick makeup tips which actually work and the quick wink at the end of a video. He was amongst the first people I started following on Youtube because of the fact that his technique videos were short and to the point because I have the attention span of a goldfish!

He launched his brush line couple of years back which is sold exclusively through Beautylish (who does ship Internationally). The brushes are hand crafted in Japan and are exceptionally soft. And in spite of this, I feel, they are more affordable than the traditional Japanese brushes – which is awesome! So, the brush under discussion is a goat hair crease brush. Wayne already has a couple of squirrel hair crease brushes in his collection. What is the difference?

1. The first is obviously that goat hair brushes are made from goat hair and squirrel ones from squirrel! Ya! Stating the obvious!
2. Squirrel hair will tend to have more give than goat hair and will spray more when same amount of pressure is applied.
3. This means that squirrel hair will give a more diffused application than a similar shaped goat here.
4. Squirrel hair needs more maintenance.
5. Goat hair is more likely to retain shape over the years.
6. Even though the point is the most obvious one, I’m mentioning it last because I do not want to elaborate on it a little – squirrel hair is generally much softer than goat hair. I say generally because that’s the case most of the time – not all of the time. There are some parts of the goat where the hair can via in their softness to the squirrel here – like the Saikoho hair. Also, you have to consider the hair as a commodity. Just like in the olden times when we (at least I did) used to go to the vegetable market – the tomato vendor would have say, 3 piles of tomato – the good quality ripe ones, the average quality ones and maybe the bit spoilt ones. It’s the same with the hair. Animal hair also varies in softness and is charged accordingly. Depending on how much is being paid by the Company, they pick up that grade of hair. So, a goat her brush can wary in softness from a stiff scratchy NARS Yachiyo to a soft Wayne Goss brush.

Hope the above information helps you. Moving on the the brush itself…I love crease brushes. For some weird reason, they are my favourite eye brush shape. Weird? Maybe. I use them for the obvious placement of crease colour. I also love them for transition shade, for darkening the outer V and for adding variations of depth to the crease. So, I generally use 2-3 crease brushes in one look.

So, I prefer the crease brush that are preferably natural hair, non-scratchy but with decent stiffness – they need to have little give, not too much. This brush fits in perfectly into my scheme of things. Is this the softest crease brush in my kitty – not really. But it is way way softer than the MAC 224. You do not feel any individual hair – you feel one smooth fluid movement.

It works really well in blending the crease or darkening the outer V without splaying too much. The brush head comes almost to a point, allowing you to use it for blending in more defined manner or a more localised area – than say with a MAC 224. Honestly, MAC 224 is no comparison to this brush. I am not saying MAC 224 is not a good brush. However, this one is in a totally different league. The reason I am using a MAC 224 as comparison here is because most of the people are familiar with MAC brushes in terms of shape and quality.

Wayne Goss Brush #19 brush handle

The brush is extremely well made and has withheld its shape with regular washing. The fact that it is goat hair and splays less, I feel it allows for more effective blending.

To sum this up for you:

Pros of Wayne Goss Brush #19:

  • Extremely soft and well crafted.
  • Light but well-balanced handle.
  • Short length of handle – allows you to go close to the mirror while using it.
  • Works excellently for blending, diffusing or even addition of colour to the outer V.
  • Bristles are extremely soft.
  • Does not shed.
  • Being natural bristled, excellent with picking up the product.
  • Made in Japan.
  • Cruelty free.

Cons of Wayne Goss Brush #19:

  • NOTHING.

IMBB Rating:
5/5

I think it’s an absolutely fabulous brush. Is it better than a squirrel hair brush? I feel that different brushes – not just different shapes but different hair – have different purpose. Also, some brushes may work better with different quality of pigmentation. Again, different brush bristles will create different look even with the same eyeshadows. So, it all depends on what kind of eye look do you generally prefer, what quality of eyeshadows you generally use and yes of course – what’s your budget. For me, I think I prefer this one to my squirrel hair crease brush, which I will review shortly.
