Wayne Goss Eyeshadow Blending Brush 06 Review

Hello lovely ladies,

Brush reviews have been on my mind since ages. However, it has been a while since I discussed any tools on IMBB, especially brushes! I love love love playing with brushes – different shapes, different types, and different products with them. It is such a joyful experiment. Everyone has a different technique of application. Hence, I will try to ensure that I do justice to the product as well as share my thoughts regarding my preferred style of application and what products I use it for. My Experience with Wayne Goss Eyeshadow Blending Brush 06:

Packaging: Wayne’s brushes come packed in a regular transparent sheath – without much fanfare.

Disclaimer: I have done comparisons with MAC brushes not because I consider MAC brushes to be any form of benchmark. On the contrary, the reason for comparison with MAC is because MAC brushes are widely recognised and a wider set of people know their specific shapes and sizes.

Design: The brush is short in size (compared to a MAC brush) and has a black wooden handle and a black ferrule – giving it a very sleek look.

Hair: Extremely soft, blue squirrel hair.

Hair Colour: Dark.

To be used with: As per the brand, the brush can be used for powder and cream products. Having said that, I would personally not recommend the use of cream (or liquid) products with a blue squirrel brush. With the use of cream products, comes the constant need for washing and the soft blue squirrel hair may not withstand that well.

Shape: Soft squirrel hair are pinched at the ferrule to create a flat shape which tapers at the top. The shape is that of a typical blending brush, something which can lay down colour as well as blend it and also work the crease. At first glance, the shape of the brush looks very close to that of a MAC 217. However, the brush is much much softer than the MAC 217 and is also less dense.

A quick disclaimer, I do not like MAC 217. I know, that’s almost like blasphemy! I know it is the “Ride or Die” brush for a lot of people – the one brush with which you can do full eye makeup – if push comes to shove. I understand that conceptually because like I earlier said, the shape allows one to apply shadow to the lid, blend it and work the crease – all with the same brush! However, I have never been fond of the shape of MAC 217. For applying shadow, I prefer something like a MAC 239 or a MAC 242 – basically, a smaller brush head with a flat surface to give more controlled application. For the crease, I prefer a fluffy round crease brush like a MAC 224! Also, I have always found MAC 217 to be a bit scratchy. So, I wanted to experiment with this shape of brush, but with something softer – hence, Wayne Goss Brush 06.

It took me a really long time to review this brush. I will share the why when I sum up my thoughts on it. This brush is part of the original line of Squirrel hair brushes launched by Wayne. While he discontinued the dyed goat hair ones and replaced them with his recently launched white hair, goat brushes, these squirrel brushes were not phased out.

To make it easy to visualize the brush – imagine a MAC 217 – but more compact since the soft squirrel hair come together and hold together way better than that of a MAC 217. The brush is about slightly thinner than MAC 217 and about a hundred times softer.

Purpose: As the name suggests, it is a blending brush. When, I initially started buying Fude (Japanese handmade brushes), I went in for the softest hair – so opting for squirrel hair over goat hair. It took me a long time to find my niche. After all this time, I prefer goat hair to squirrel hair – specifically for eye brushes, since their tenacity makes blending easier. When I ordered this brush, I used it in a specific way and it didn’t seem to work for me. So, I didn’t use it for a very long time. Hence, it stayed un-reviewed for close to a year. My re-attempts to use the brush left me surprised.

The brush has extremely soft hair, is fluffy, and has a fair amount of give. Despite this, it is able to pick and deposit both matte and shimmer shades very well. It allows you to blend the colours as you apply. I can almost do a full look with just this brush. I am able to apply and blend the eyeshadow on the lid, lower lash line, and even the arch of my brow. The only thing it isn’t able to do effectively is to blend the crease into transition into skin. I feel this to be an issue, not from the perspective of the shape but the softness of the bristles.

As per the brand – the brush can also be used with cream products. However, I have not tried it with cream products as I am not inclined to use such a soft squirrel brush with creams.

IMBB Rating:
5/5

It is a beautiful, well made, elegantly-crafted brush which performs very well. If you are interested in this brush, I would recommend it. Having said that, is it a need to have this brush? Maybe not. Rather, I would say, for my style of eyeshadow application, it’s not a “need-to-have” brush. However, if you like using just 1-2 shadows on the lid and like a quick and yet good application and be on your way – this brush would work well for you.
