Wet n Wild Mega Last Lip Color in Sugar Plum Fairy Review

Hey Gorgeous Gals,

Spring is here! Finally, right? My two favorite seasons have always been spring, for the flowers, and monsoon, for the rains. Spring also means that it’s time to pack up the sweaters, clean up our houses and get rid of a lot of useless things. For a makeup hoarder like me, this can be a bittersweet experience. Throwing out old makeup can be pretty painful, but it also frees up space for more makeup. Today, I will be reviewing a recent addition to my makeup collection – Wet n Wild’s Sugar Plum Fairy. It’s my first, official, spring purchase and, boy, am I excited to talk about it!

Product Background and Information:

So, it took me some digging around to get to the background of the Wet’n’ Wild (henceforth, WnW) Cosmetics. You see, unlike other brands, WnW doesn’t have a Wikipedia page or even an “About Us” section on their website. After an intense web search session, I found that WnW’s parent company is Markwins International. An American company, Markwins International was founded by Eric Chen in 1984. The company owns several other cosmetic brands, among them are: The Color Workshop, Black Radiance and The Color Institute. Recently, in December 2012, Markwins acquired the popular drugstore brand “Physicians Formula.”

Using WnW cosmetics has been a sort of rite of passage for young beauty junkies in North America; it was for me as WnW cosmetics were the only ones I could afford as a teenager! But over the years, the company has totally revamped its image. Today, their products are considered favorites by women of all ages and are especially popular in the online beauty community.  I have seen the brand evolve over the years and even though there is a lot of room for improvement, overall, the quality of their best products rivals many department store makeup brands. Among these products are WnW eyeshadows, lipsticks and gel liners.

Sugar Plum Fairy 2

Sugar Plum Fairy is one shade from their Mega Last Lip Color line. Mega Last Lip Color is described as a “4-hour, long-wearing lip color [that] leaves a semi-matte, creme finish in one stroke” and that “glides on easily with rich, velvety color that doesn’t cake, feather, or bleed.” Furthermore, it is “made with hydrating skin-care ingredients: Hyaluronic Microspheres [which] provide[s] extraordinary adhesion to lips” and “natural marine plant extracts Coenzyme Q10 and Vitamins A & E [which] help smooth lips.”

Price:

$1.99 for a 0.11 oz tube.

My Experience with Wet n Wild Mega Last Lip Color in Sugar Plum Fairy:

When it comes to lipsticks, I prefer matte formulas. Mattes are usually long lasting, perfect for daytime wear and can be worn under a gloss for a more glamorous night time look. I gravitated toward WnW’s Mega Last lipsticks because they are considered to be one of the best drugstore lipsticks. At $1.99 a pop, I figured it wouldn’t hurt the pocket to experiment with these.

Sugar Plum Fairy 5

Sugar Plum Fairy is a rich purplish-berry shade which looks more purple in the tube and more berry on my lips. Overall, this isn’t a color for people who like to stick to neutral lipsticks, but a must-have for those of you who like darker lipsticks. The color is almost identical to MAC’s Rebel lipstick and will flatter almost all skin tones, especially darker ones. It is buildable and can be worn as a light wash (as you can see in the lighter lip swatch). Two swipes of this, will give you the perfect night-time (dare I say vampy?) lips. This isn’t a color I would wear in the daytime and, until now, have only worn it at night.

Sugar Plum Fairy 6

This lipstick isn’t as dry as other shades from this line or matte lipsticks from other brands. I would classify this as a semi-matte formula. However, I still apply quick coat of chap stick before putting the lipstick on to make application a lot easier. The chap stick doesn’t affect the lipstick’s lasting power and helps distribute the lipstick evenly on my lips and prevents feathering. Although this lipstick promises 4 hours of wear, this one lasts on my lips until I take it off and even though it transfers onto food and glasses, a deep stain remains until I take it off. I think this is a great formula for work or events, where it might be difficult to squeeze a touch up.

WnW Sugar Plum Fairy Swatch Dark

Based solely on the appearance of this lipstick, if it wasn’t for the low price, I probably wouldn’t have picked this lipstick up. The tube is made up of cheap plastic and some of the lipstick gets on the cap whenever I close it.  Now, you might be thinking that I am just  clumsy with my makeup, but this is an issue a lot of people have with this particular product line. The packaging, however, is not at all representative of the product. I really feel that the brand could improve on the packaging and bump up the price up by 1-2 dollars. I think people would still love this lipstick, if not a little more. I know I would.

Pros of Wet n Wild Mega Last Lip Color in Sugar Plum Fairy:

  • Rich, vibrant, pigmented color.
  • Long lasting. This particular shade offers more than the four hours of wear.
  • Very economically priced, especially for the quality.
  • No strong fragrance. I don’t detect a fragrance at all. In my experience, most economically priced lipsticks smell really bad.
  • Clear cap lets you see what’s inside easily. Makes storing and retrieving simpler.
  • Great dupe for MAC Rebel.

Cons of Wet n Wild Mega Last Lip Color in Sugar Plum Fairy:

  • Packaging. The cheap plastic packaging is far from chic and is even functionally challenged! It’s a good thing I don’t judge a beauty product by its packaging, well, not most of the time!
  • Availability. While you can buy these online, they are not available in Indian stores. I wish W n W would expand to India soon.

Bottom Line:

Sugar Plum Fairy is the perfect rich, vampy, deep-berry shade. Don’t let the flimsy packaging make you miss out on a formula that rivals department store lipsticks at a dollar store price.

IMBB Rating:

4.75/5 (would be a perfect score, but minus .25 for the bad packaging).

  1. Love this shade on you Devie…..Faces Go Chic range has a similar shade, Wild Orchid, though this one looks too good. I am a hoarder too, I don’t like to throw any stuff away, but you are so right, need to clear things up to make space for new ones 😛

    1. Thanks, Jomol 😀 I haven’t seen Faces’ Wild Orchid yet…though the Rebel review you linked to has a couple of great dupes photographed, too.

      1. Devie, I have Rebel, and its almost the same, you are bang on 🙂 I linked it to the MAC Rebel review by Rati 🙂 This one looks so pretty on your lips 🙂

    1. Thanks, Melissa! I haven’t tried Maybelline’s Berry Brilliant, will check it out next time I’m at the drugstore 🙂

  2. Devie I have this and I am in love with this color I wear this lipstick so often :D.. Infact I am planning to purchase a few more lipsticks from this line. I agree to every bit of what you’ve said in this review..

and no you aren’t clumsy hihiihi…cuz I can relate to the lipstick smearing on the cap part of it.., while taking off and putting the cap back.. oh and I remember when I first tried opening this lipstick the packaging was so tight that I almost damaged the lipstick 🙁

    1. It’s really gorgeous, isn’t it, Dipti? I really like this whole line. They have so many flattering shades for deeper toned women! I love it 🙂 The packaging needs a LOT of work!

  3. The packaging is the only dud… otherwise its an awesome lipstick… cnt get anything better for that price… u are right markwins owns wet n wild and in fact black radiance has similar 8 pan eyeshadow pallettes like wnw .. i really liked ur review Devie 🙂

    1. Wow, you knew about Markwins, Nats? I had no idea until I did some digging around. Wonder why the founder is so low key…I’d be shouting from rooftops if I owned so many cosmetics companies 😛
