My Worst Buy of the Season – Tathaastu

I was going crazy about checking out Tathaastu skincare products from past few months. But since they have only one store at DLF Vasant Kunj, New Delhi so I have not been able to get hold of their products.

Finally I went there to check out some of their stuff. They are an aromatherapy brand and have everything natural and herbal. Infact the face packs that they sell are prepared freshly there and then by their professional aromatherapists. They have a huge collection of bath, body and wellness products. I spent at least half an hour at their store checking out the products but the only thing that was putting me off again and again were the smells. The fragrances of the products were was obnoxious but then I was ready to ignore the smell considering all the goodness of natural ingredients. One lip balm I remember had a rose fragrance and when I smelled it had a smell of rotten roses. Also their products don’t have any preservatives so they expire within 8-10 months of their manufacturing.

Finally I decided to give their night cream a try and apart from that I was looking for an oil diffuser for quite some time, I picked one from their range. The night cream is a blend of avacado, beeswax, almonds and essential oils. Price Rs 545.

Tathaastu Oil Dispenser

Tathaastu Oil Dispenser

I met a friend in evening and I was showing her my stuff. As soon as she smelled the cream she said, “it smells like a dead rat.” I thought she was just having fun and I can obviously tolerate some bad smell for my skin.

Tathaastu Night Cream

I applied it at night and my hubby had no clue that I had used anything on my face. Within 5 minutes he started saying that the room is smelling of a dead fish. He started looking under the furniture to check if there is any dead rat or something in the room. I was so horrified that I did not speak a word until a few minutes and then I confessed that it’s the cream that is smelling. ๐Ÿ™

I had to finally wash my face because the smell was sickening me as well. Even after that I had to spray perfume on myself and in the room. ๐Ÿ™

Well!! this didn’t end here. I was just analyzing the cream in the morning and I saw that there is a hair at the bottom of the jar. Sick!!

Tathaastu Night Cream

Terrible!! Waste of money, and energy. Infact I am not picking anything from them ever. ๐Ÿ™

I am glad I did not buy any of their stuff.:pumpkin: I am happy with the oil diffuser though.

Have you tried any Tathaastu product?

  1. Sounds awful Rati..

In fact I have never heard of this name..And the sight of hair in a beauty product?? :reallyangry:

As an aromatherapist, I believe that the responsibility of the manufacturer is much more than that of a normal one. Aroma oils have certain strict storage criteria like temperature, light etc and this has to be stringently managed as otherwise, the oils turn rancid and the effects could be toxic.

From what you mentioned about the smells, I feel that more than pure essential oils(which are very expensive), they would have used low quality synthetic substitutes which causes that “obnoxiuos” smell..

Sad that there was a lot of money and time waste..But its a lesson learnt and a warning to anyone who thinks of purchasing this brand.

    1. You know I so love Blossom Kochhar’s oils that it was only after using her products that i started believing in aromatherapy. The oils were very strong and even a thought of using them was scaring me. I wanted to purchase their under eye oil but I found it very heavy and strong for my under eye area. I might be wrong here but that’s what I felt.

And to add it all there is a hair in the product. How gross can it get? :pumpkin:

      Really irritated. :reallypissed:

  2. :pig2: :pig2: glad you did the review Rati, I would never even think of trying those……dead rat……..I wanna throw up………..poor thing…I feel sorry that you had to apply it on your face….. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

    1. Palak,

I am actually not feeling good after writing this post. I don’t know if it is fair to write such strong opinion about any company or not. But anyway, I also couldn’t help myself from putting this post up. Sigh!!

  3. Poor baby… imagine finding a bloody HAIR in something you pay good money for!!! Yuck!!!

And don’t feel bad about giving the strong opinion – this will stop others from smelling ratty ๐Ÿ˜› it’s a social service that you’re doing!!! ๐Ÿ˜€ :rotfl:
.-= ki.´s last blog ..Don’t quite know what to write =-.

  4. hahaha… Rati you smell of dead rats.. hehehe.. i am imagining Sanjeev bhaiya checking under furniture for a dead rat and your expressions when you would have told me ” Sanjeev its me who is stinking” hahahahha!!!!!

Pulling your leg aside.. even i saw the advertisement of this product and i was thinking how come no one did a review or talked about them on IMBB.. and here it is.. but sad that its ssoooo bad..

Even i got an oil vaporiser from bare essentials.. its not this good looking but its good for what it is..!!!

Hair… how gross is that.. pukish.. yuck..

    1. Gawdd!! I can’t tell you how embarrassing it was to even accept that the stinker is me. ๐Ÿ˜€ Sanjeev couldn’t believe that they could bring such a product in market. Don’t they smell their own products. ๐Ÿ™

And hair!! Dammit!! Nothing could be worse.

I am loving this vaporiser. It is adding to my drawing room. ๐Ÿ™‚ Which oils do you use?

      1. Hi Rati, I have gone through all your expirience about Tathaastu Products. But I’m a big fan of Tathaastu Products and i’m quite happy. Itโ€™s so mild totally natural without any chemical in it. Tathaastu don’t even use preservative shelf life is only nine to ten months. In whole market we would not find this much pureness product. This is my challenge. I have tried so many other Skincare Brands but not pure or good as Tathaastu for me.
Now coming on Smell of Tathaastu Products there could be a possibility that since there is no preservative and any added fragrance could be change according to room temperature. Itโ€™s always better to keep pure natural products in a low temperature.
Well, you said Hair…..in the product oohh…only God knows ?:-) . I have never come accross. :-/

  5. I personally used face wash neem, aloe & toner and day cream and face cream which has got Elle beauty awardin natural category. I am even very happy with the results…..if i think about ur experience as you purchased the product i think smell you should have checked first as you like it or not….i am very big fan of Tathaastu products….may be ur experience is quite unique…In thousands of people every body cant be happy …..:) I am loving Tathaastu anyway. Even i have used their organic shampoos they are just awesome…. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Hi Anjali, it was nice to meet you at the Tathaastu store yesterday. I wanted to give a good coverage to Tathaastu but this is exactly what I experienced. I did smell the product at the store with your help and I had no issues with it. It was only after applying it on my face in larger quantity that my room started to smell. Also, I didn’t give any opinion about the product either to my friend or to my husband, they came up with the smell issue on their own. I was also very upset about the presence of hair in the product. It is totally unacceptable to me.

As a marketing manager at Tathaastu, I am sure you would be loving their products because why would you work with a brand that you don’t have any trust into. ๐Ÿ™‚ I am happy that Elle has awarded Tathaastu for its products. I am sure they work for other people.

Thank you for your comment. ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Omg what a tedious story!
I must admit that I laughed a little bit
(he started to check under the furniture haha)
but experiencing this must be very unpleasant:(
And that hair, how gross, that’s terrible!
I hope the company will improve their products!
.-= Sunaina´s last blog ..One dress, two looks =-.

  7. Oops i just saw its not from bare essentials its from this company Iris home fragrances vaporizer oil in lemon grass even the diffuser is from the same company.. actually bf got a lot of things from bare essentials and it was in the same package so i thought even this is from bare essentials.

The package of the oil says to half fill the top of the fragrance vaporizer with water and then add 4-5 drops to the water. Is this how you used it. Bf used it directly without water and he said the fragrance was better that way. whats the right way..??

    1. I also use it with water and oil. I like it that way. Direct oil gets a little stronger for my liking. ๐Ÿ™‚ Lemongrass sounds like a very nice fragrance. I will look out for it. ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. Gals…

Sorry to interfere..Never ever use EOs directly in a diffuser…Please add water and then a few drops of the oil..Same applies to the Iris type diffuser blends too..

        1. Thank you ,Poornima. It was a good alarm! I use it with water only because I like mild fragrances but will make sure never to use the essential oils directly ever. ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. O what an awful experience. Rs.545 down the drains ๐Ÿ™ . But as you said Blossom Kochhar is an awesome brand. It has never let me down

  9. This is shocking! Rati, are you going to ask them for a refund? Could probably write to their customer service..

      1. I know, but that doesn’t cover anything about the refund.. They should have offered to exchange it at the least.. anyway.

DH here is laughing his lungs out reading about ‘checking under the furniture’ part.. ๐Ÿ˜€

  10. lol, Rati, next time ur husband does smell a dead rat, he may come smell ur face first (just in case) ok Im just k/d. But seriously..hair in the cream?-ughhh do u think it was the dead rat’s??!! ๐Ÿ˜‰ One would expect a brand like T (Ive seen them featured in all the fashion and luxury magazines) to be careful about these things. They seem to have conveniently ignored the ‘hair’ issue in their reply post…jeeez, at least offer a refund to save face, people!

    1. I know, he has been lol *ing* at me since yesterday. ๐Ÿ˜€ Ewwww!! hair of a rat. Grosss!!

I was also going ga-ga about trying their products after seeing the features in magazine. Well!! they pay to magazines but here it is vice versa. :-))

  11. OMG this is so hilarious!!! Rotten roses, dead rat, dead fish ROFLLLLL :rotfl: ๐Ÿ˜€
And the a hair??!! ๐Ÿ˜€ . This brand should be shut down! And what kind of a name is Tathaastu? lol. Even if it has some meaning in some language, it still sounds funny

Sorry that yr money was wasted Rati n thanks for the heads up on the “rotten” LOL

    1. ๐Ÿ˜€ :rotfl: I am so scared after this experience that Iw as checking all my products whether they are clean or not. It’s yuk!!

I am wondering in what mood have you written this comment. ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

  12. These things are totally unacceptable especially if the products are for skin acre etc etc..or anything for that matter..Why would we pay for something that is defective/contaminated??

Hope the marketing manager who read these comments and continues to read, talks to her company about this and work out something. If not, I am sure the brand is going to be in trouble.

Such issues can always be raked up in a consumer forum/court and it would cost them not only money, but also their reputation.

@ Cynth : “Thathaastu” is a Sanskrit word, which means “Let it be so”. It is generally supposed to be used by Gods when they have to bless the lesser mortals. It is also believed that when we desire something or ask for a wish, it is granted by saying Thathaastu ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. I hope that happens. According to them they are also supplying products to 5 star hotels, they should look into these issues atleast. t is beyond my imagination that a skincare product can have a hair in it. I am ready to accept that the smell must have put me off but it might be pleasant for someone else but who would take unhygienic *expensive *products?

I quite like the name Tathaastu. ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. Hi Rati,

Do u really know the real story of this brand….the products are manufactured at Dehradoon and packed at a small dirty room supposed to be for the house dogs for this multi millionaire lady coming from the famous Kanoria’s family of Kolkata….a gradutae by degree and practising aromatherapy just from last 3-4 years with no formal degree…..I do not know why our government cannot do anything against these kind of people….in actuality they should be jailed for doing this….the store opened without any manufacturing license and stupid DLF didn’t checked anything which is an equal partner in crime due to revenue sharing model…newspaper articles are just worth a couple of thousand rupees a month which anyone could spend and this stupid media carries it without any thought…bottles for packaging are purchased from Chandni Chowk and packaging done without any proper machine wash….is this not enough to stop them…. :reallyangry:

  14. Wowww..Rati..am still catching up on stuff in your blog ๐Ÿ™‚ A dead rat? You need a hug for going through that experience. Hubby searching for the dead rodent everywhere and you sitting quietly!! And totally agree with Cynthia..that is a weird name. I know what it means..and it seems pretty odd. Lemme see..”Oh a rat’s died in our cream” …”Let it be so” Makes sense now…Where is the angry face emoticon when you need it???? And the cheek of the lady to try to explain how great the product is! The least she could do is check the product with you and try to rectify whatever is wrong…ok maybe your nose and everybody around you..their noses are all bad..BUT WHAT ABOUT THE HAIR? Eye problems too I suppose..I am fuming here..

    1. lol!! on top of that they called me up to ask how could I post this this..Like yeah?

No mention of the refund or no apology on their behalf. Awesome! ๐Ÿ™‚

  15. I donโ€™t believe this. In fact i m using tathaastuโ€™s products from last one year and trust me their face washes & scrubs are really really good.

I can actually feel the differenceโ€ฆโ€ฆ

I hope you know that these are 100% natural products and without preservatives. These products has short shelf life.

What is the point of using any beauty products which smells really good and u end up using 10 different types of chemicals on ur body.

i am buying tathaastu creamโ€™s from last one year..

Sorry but such hair incidence never happened with me..
In fact i m happy โ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ. Big Smile

    1. I also picked this up thinking it would do good to my skin, I wasn’t too keen on the smell. But something that smells obnoxious is way too hard to take. Also, I am aware of how natural products work. Most of us use Lush products here that have a short shelf life and are 100% natural so you see, this was not the first natural product I was trying.

Glad they are working for you. ๐Ÿ™‚

    2. Hi Sim,

When I was studying in IIT Delhi, we used to have a dhaba called ‘Shashi ka Dhaba’ in front of our IIT hostel gate. Ask any IITian studying there in the 90s and Shashi ka Dhaba would hold a special place in his memories. Anyhow, one day while I was eating my aaloo paranthaas there, I found a huge coackroach lying in my sabji. I do not know how you would have felt about it, but I felt like puking right then and there. I could not eat another bite there. Sensibly, Shashi did not charge me at all.

But if I had gone ahead and asked my batchmates if they had a similar experience at Shashi’s I am sure I would not have found many who did (although during the years 2 or 3 of my friends DID have similar experience there and, like me, they all stopped eating there). Similarly, posting your ‘good experience’ over here doesn’t sound very convincing to me. After all, what would be the number of customers finding hair (or any other impurities) in Tathaastu products? And out of those customers how many would ever log on to internet, come on IMBB, and report their findings? Practically none. But does it alleviate the seriousness of the unhygienic product that we got?

As for your point about using beauty products which smell really good but use preservatives, I have another question to ask- what is the point of using a beauty product that do not use preservative but make you smell like a dead rat? I would not want my wife to wear that kind of beauty product anyways.

I am sure that there are many people who are satisfied with Tathaastu products. Which is fine by us. We actually want our Indian companies to hold a candle to foreign brands. Rati went to Tathaastu store only because she was very enthusiastic about covering a new upcoming brand. But unfortunately the cycle of events turned out to be quite contrary to what we expected. And coupled with the rudeness we experienced from the Tathaastu staff after this blog post, I do not think we are visiting there again.

Even a small dhaba owner such as Shashi had the good sense not to charge me. Tathaastu staff never even offered to refund us the money or replace the product.

    1. XoXo,

They reached me. Initially they were rude but then when that did not work they were polite and wanted me to give tathaastu the second chance. I really don’t want to try any of their stuff now. No faith.

  16. Wow…this is like a big controversy…I had never heard of Tathastu till now but after hearing all this, I am pretty sure none will visit their store ever again….they should have saved their faces and compensated you….sad to hear such a thing…..I am at least happy that you did not have any reaction after using such a product…..specially when there were no preservatives and the product was so unhygienic…

  17. Really bad experience Rati, you did right by sharing it here.
The least they cd do aftr reading this post is refund you or replace d product.
Why do we pay for their mistakes (hair in product).

  18. Hi Ladies,
After reading the entire Story out here I am very disappointed, as i bought the Tathastu products for my Hair last month, and i kind of liked it as well.Infact even after being such a costly brand i was planning on purchasing some more and continuing it hence forth.
But after reading all this I cannot dare to do that.Plz suggest me should I go on with this brand products or it is a mistake???
