There was a lot of ho-hum when this product was launched way back in April or May of this year. Like any makeup fanatic, I wanted to give this a shot, for how unique it looked and the promises it claimed. A lot of make-up artists and bloggers gave it either extremely positive reviews or extremely mixed ones. I was confused if I should pick this up, when Sephora came up with a combo offer, in which a smaller version of the liner was sold along with the full sized, fantabulous “They’re Real Mascara”. With nothing much to lose, I took that offer, and here are my thoughts on this revolutionary product. Enjoy!
Why we love it!
It’s the FIRST EVER lash-hugging gel liner in a pen! This matte black gel formula won’t smudge, budge or dry out, and the innovative soft AccuFlex™ Tip hugs your lashline from corner to corner. The closer the line, the bigger the eye!
24-hour* & waterproof
*Instrumental test on 19 panelists
91% said it was longwearing*
88% said it hugged the lashline*
84% said eyes looked visibly larger*
*Results observed in a consumer panel survey on 32 women after 2 weeks
How to apply
For first-time use
To prep the pen, remove the AccuFlex™ tip protector & discard. Twist base until gel appears on tip. Wipe off excess.
For daily use:
Wipe leftover gel off AccuFlex™ tip before each use to get fresh liner every time. Slowly twist base until a tiny amount of gel appears on tip. Rest the tip on the base of your lashes and guide along your lashline from either the inner or outer corner. The angled AccuFlex™ tip works both ways.
Price and Quantity: $24for 1.4g (I bought the Real Steal limited edition for the same price)
My Experience with Benefit They’re Real! Push-Up Liner:
The gel liner comes in a sturdy, black, plastic pen-like wand. All the magic in this product begins at the never-seen-before tip. It is slant in shape, made out of silicone, which is moderately flexible. There is a compact opening at the top of the slanted tip, from where the product can be dispensed, by twisting the bottom. It comes with an orange plug that you may want to keep hold of, which I’ve already lost :pThe first time I started using it, I had to twist it a number of times. I almost thought that the wand could be empty, since it’s hard to figure out what really is going on inside it. It is not too creamy, neither runny, but has a thick and slightly dry formula. It is super matte, soft and glides on pretty well. The slanted tip on the pen is so convenient, that obtaining that perfect line couldn’t get easier than this! Initially, it may seem a little difficult to work with, but once you get the hang of it, it’s hard to stop using it. It is easier to get closer to the lash line, and everytime I’ve worn this, I’ve always been complimented.
Now girls, when you know you’ve been complimented, the product is a definite keeper :pYou need to apply this quickly, since it dries up fast and can lead to the formation of lumps. Since there is a lot of product at the beginning, it’s better to start at center of the eye, going outwards and thereafter coming back for the inner corner. One thing that I’m unhappy about is that it flakes. I mean, you’d see some very tiny black spots below the eyes. Also, sometimes the line formed can get bumpy, so you may have go over it lightly, to smooth it out.Resist applying on an already existing line, since it will flake and turn it entirely horrible. Wipe the tip off between applications, so that there is no dried up product left on it.I’ve noticed that before every application, there is always some dried up product that comes out. The product is extremely waterproof, so much that I feel like I’m abusing my eyes even after using an amazing cleanser, like the Bioderma Sensibio H2O, to take it off. This is the only reason that I don’t like to wear it daily. I’d suggest using the trusty ol’ olive oil to take it off, or Benefit’s They’re Real! Remover, which is made particularly for this liner.

The tip makes it a lot easier to obtain the perfect winged line.
Cons of Benefit They’re Real! Push-Up Liner:
There is no way of finding how much product is left.
Can be lumpy.
Formula is dry.
Flakes after some hours.
Can’t touch up an already drawn line since it flakes.
IMBB Rating: 3.9/5
Would I Buy or RecommendBenefit They’re Real Push-Up! Liner?
It’s a love-hate sort of product for me. It does a fantastic job of helping one achieve the perfect winged line. If they would tweak the formula a little to prevent the liner from flaking, then I don’t think I’d look anywhere else for the perfect gel liner. If you can overlook the cons, then you may want to check this out:D
