Doubts About Hair Coloring: Ask IMBB

Ask IMBB Gang

Neha I. Asks:

Hi Rati,

I want the help of all the lovely ladies out there on IMBB.  Many people say hair coloring is bad, it spoils the hair forever and blah blah. I am quite bored of my look and also I have some grey strands in the front which make me look more aged than I am.  I tried mehandi but grey strands turn orange then. I am 29 now. My hair is quite long, till the waist and with texture not so silky. I also want a hair cut to change my look.  I want all of you to please advise me whether I would go for a hair color or not and what hair cut is in nowadays and which would suit an oval shape face like mine.

Thanks a lot,

Neha I.

  1. Hi Neha,

Though I don’t have an issue of grey hair and have used henna in the hope that it would condition my frizzy hair which didn;t happen. I have black hair though I too wish to change the color to something lighter. However, you can read the review of Nupur mehandi by mrunmayee here https://makeupandbeauty.com/henna-for-hair-tips-and-usage/ which gives her lovely color as well as shine.

You can read WElla Kolestint’s review here https://makeupandbeauty.com/wella-kolestint-hair-colour/.

If you have straight hair, you can go for feather cut or add layers and bangs to your hair….:)

  2. Hi Neha,

I inherited grey hair from my father, so I have to color my hair frequently. Go for Inoa from a good salon and your hair would be nice and glossy. Just take a bit of extra care like oiling, Spas etc.

  3. Hi Neha,

My mother regularly colors her hair to cover greys and she has been doing this for years now… You can also do that. Do ensure that you use ammonia free color and give proper conditioning to your hair after coloring.

    1. Pallavi…ejjactly ….no ammonia it seems…its bad not only for hair but for health too….I read in the papers 🙂

  4. Ok so I’ve colored my hair loads, I avoid it now because of all the chemicals but thats a personal choice. I would not say coloring hair is bad or anything like that. Of course excess of anything is bad for u and once you have colored hair you MUST take care of it, it requires some more TLC than un colored hair.

If you color your hair, try to avoid getting blonde or super light brown streaks. They look horrid and went out of fashion a few years ago (thank god). Try to get 1-2 shades lighter, so deep brown if you have black hair, or go towards reds and berry burgundy. On black hair, these shades catch the light beautifully while the your hair still looks brown/black. What I would suggest for your first time is go to a salon, a good one. Get a good consult with a stylist who looks at your hair, your skin and will suggest the best look for you. The same stylist can color and cut your hair so you get a perfect all in one look.

Once you get used to it and have decided if you want to always have colored hair, learn how to do it yourself.

But before, spend some money, get a good stylist. Also make sure that your stylist is nice and you trust him or her. So that if you find that what he/she has done with your hair is not to your liking, you can discuss your concerns with your stylist and he can fix it for free 😛 or at least at a minimal cost. Lots of good salons have this policy.

    Happy coloring 😀

    1. Janhavi…………thumbsup….and I envy you…..I want to color my hair one day, without any fear. Blonde streaks….eeks……but I think one or two shades lighter the current hair color would work for everyone…..cheerso Jahnavi 🙂

      1. JOmoooooo wasssup ?! I colored my hair when I was 12 for the firsht time 😛 color it I swear kuch nahin hoga.

those blonde streaks were so baaad. There was a time when every heroine in bollywood had them and they looked grotesque :S

  5. Ok regarding hair color I have just tried mehandi.. That too just once.. but for hair cut I would suggest layer cut.. It suits most of them I feel..

  6. Hi, I color my hair regularly at home and have also highlighted etc in the salon earlier. To cover greys, you need to use hair color with Ammonia. Ammonia free color is only to change the color of hair. It does not cover greys. Also, I think the whole thing about Ammonia being harmful is over hyped. If you get the allergy test done (mentioned on any hair color pack) 24 hours before coloring them and there is no reaction… you can color hair without worrying. Bleach, which we use on face, has more ammonia anyday. If we can use ammonia on face, why worry about hair (which is dead skin).
I think Mehendi is bad for hair… it makes them dry and frizzy. Also, the color is looks bad. Hair color will also improve the texture of your hair if you take care and color protect shampoo/conditioner.
Go ahead and color without a fear.

  7. Coloured hair=maintenance{spcl.conditioner,colored hair shampoo}
    Long hair+colourd hair= extra maintenance
You should probably go for a little shorter hairstyle+global colour{but nothing drastic}because once your hair grows you are just pushed to colour it again.
Do something closer to your hair colour.Go for browns rather than plums and reds.Because if you dont like it you cant re-colour unless the original colour fades off on its own(these shades take maximum time to fade-my stylist told me)
If you are just feeling playful then do only streaks(highlighting)this way you are not damaging all your hair and it fades out pretty evenly. At first just do a crown area instead of overall(global)streaks, see how the colour is treating you and then only go ahead.have fun!

  8. Honestly, if you are willing to go the extra mile in taking care of ur hair, any hair treatment can be done 🙂
I color my hair since about 4-5yrs now.. kuchhh nahi hota 🙂 just deep condition it once while: )

  9. hey neha ..hello hws u doing..? m a medical student and an amateur wen it comes to color hairs…n fews tips i wuld like to share..
1 test any hair color prdct on ur elbow or behind ear to confirm allery test no matter it is ammonia free or not.
2 NEVER go overboard with ur coloring sessions
3 get it done at the salon from an experiance styalist so then u knw the basics tht how they do all stuff..then u can easily do it at ur home using home kits.
4 as u are greying, do find out the cause of it..consult a physician ,get at checkup done to confirm whats causing grey hairs…even using ‘hard water’ to wash hairs cause greying so try using water softner..mainly the greying start aftr 35 so i will consider this as
    PRE MATURE ..
5 u are OVAL face shaped so.literally any haircut will suit u…but i think haircuts haveing volume wil suit u more then anything… go for lazers, with bangs and fringes (if straight hair) or jus blow dary ur hairs….this messy hairdo is very much IN.
6 i wnt advice using mehandi.times have changed now so is the quality of everythng. WAIT FOR A MONTH OR SO TO GET MEHANDI COLOR GET OFF.THEN ONLY USE HAIR COLOR.

    gud luck dear !!

  10. p.s i have my whole hairs colored strawberry( read-honey)blonde and ppl say i look gud …though its may sound dramatic here but in real it look abs. natural…!! if u wanna check out my pics ovr facebook u are welcome…u might get brief idea.

  11. Thank you all of you for your valuable suggestions. Now I have overcome my fear of coloring. I am gonna do a nice haircut then color my hair…

    thanks a lot 🙂

  12. I too was in a similar dilemma four year ago. I love my hair and the most drastic thing I did with them was have a haircut. And even after a cut, I would not let the hairdresser use the blow-dryer to style them but I used to love experimenting with the style as in different style of braids, buns, cuts, etc. And HAIR COLOR was something I wanted to do… I was 25 and knew I probably wont have the guts to color my hair Red, blue or green few years thence. And my logic was – Go to a good parlor (they dont touch your roots) and worst damage can be with the hair already grown. If it doesn’t suit me or my hair is damaged, I can go for super short cut which will eventually grow to my required length.
So after much thought, I gave it a shot with streaks of light brown, I have black hair with the front one streak colored red. It was an awesome experience and since I work in PSU Bank where this is a BIG thing… everyone I mean everyone seniors, juniors and customers all used to stare at my hair… It cant be described but it gave that kick of defying the norms of being different….
So go ahead, if you want it, get it done…. U wont regret it…. baal apne hi hain fir se aa jayenge…. haan dont forget to go to a good salon… 🙂

  13. dear neha
if u wana try some natural remedy than opt for the amla powder than heena
it will give a good coverage to those grey strands…………..

  14. reviews here say hair color shouldn’t cause damage if taken a proper care…but I had a horrible experience, my hair texture is curly thick soft and shiny….I got streaks done a year back from Naturals salon, and took all the care I was supposed to take like using Schwarzkopf shampoo and conditioner for colored hair, regular spas, but now my hair is a mess, all the hair portions which I got colored have become soooo frizzy and have spit-ends like anything(I never had split ends before 🙁 🙁
