Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter Hu$tla Baby Review

Hey lovely ladies!

Time to shine like the sun! Bringing to you a highlighter review after a long time! This one is from the much-hyped Kendo brand – Fenty Beauty. I’ve wanted to try their highlighters. How can one not, when a brand releases a plethora of them! I didn’t, till now, because either the shades didn’t speak to me (of the singles) or the glitter didn’t work for me (in case of the duos where one side is a super-glitter highlighter). And it was too much money to sink in. Finally, they released this ‘Bomb Baby Mini Lip and Face Set’ with their Gloss Bomb in Fenty Glow (which has already been reviewed) and their Killawatt Highlighter in the shade Hu$tla Baby. So, I’m going ahead and sharing my thoughts on the highlighter. Let us find out if this highlighter makes me glow on the inside and out!!

Packaging:
The set consists of a decent sized version of both products packaged in a nice cardboard box. The gloss bottle is an actual miniature version of the original one – same shape and styling – which is kind of sweet. The highlighter is again similar packaging to the Killawatt Freestyle Single Highlighters – the same shape and quality of original highlighters. The compact looked white and plastic in pictures – kind of cheap. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the packaging, despite being plastic, is actually quite good quality and looks aesthetically appealing up close in an understated classic way.

My Experience with Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter Hu$tla Baby:

A brief about the product – Fenty released 6 powder highlighter compacts as part of their collection. Out of these, two are singles – ‘Metal Moon’ and the much-hyped ‘Trophy Wife’. Rest of the 4 highlighters are duos with split pans. Each of these duos consists of 2 highlighters in similar tones with one side housing a subtle version and the other side housing some glitter infused version. ‘Hu$tla Baby’ is a part of one such duo and is from the more glittery side.

Shade:
The shade is a medium, bright peachy yellow gold with warm undertones and a high shine, glittery metallic finish. This, to me, is the new-age Insta-appropriate highlighter. This is not meant for someone who likes the glow-from-within look or for someone who is using the highlighter to draw out a feature. Instead, this is the ‘shine-to-the-moon’ type of product which seems to have a lot of takers in the current social media age.

This is super bright and has distinct fine golden micro-glitter particles. So, you need to be okay with micro-glitter on your face and with an obvious amount of shine that this imparts even when used with a light hand. Also, since the depth of the shade and how warm it pulls, this would work well on light to medium to maybe even deeper skin tone. This may not be the shade for someone with pale or fair skin tone.

Dupe:
The shade is in the ballpark of Becca’s Champagne Pop. However, Champagne Pop does not have such obvious micro-glitter.

Texture:
The texture is soft and smooth to touch, almost creamy without feeling dense. It is extremely easy to pick up on most brushes and blends effortlessly. Even though the texture of the highlighter is not dense, the presence of the obvious micro-glitter results in the product highlighting the texture of the skin when you even slightly heavily.

This may not be a cause of concern for someone with younger or smoother skin. But if you have existing texture or have mature skin this may not be the best product to use as a highlighter – because, it will not appear flattering.

Pigmentation:
The pigmentation is good but it doesn’t go on as dark as in the pan. It can be sheered out or built up as desired. Either way, this will still give an “obvious” kind of shine.

Longevity:
The product wears exceptionally well. It stays put for 7-8 hours, which is a lot on my oily skin.

Pros of Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter Hu$tla Baby:

• Soft and smooth powder
• Extremely metallic sheen
• Blends easily
• Fairly long-lasting – even with my oily skin
• Whether used lightly or heavily it gives a bright “obvious” highlight
• Did not break me out
• A little product goes a long way
• Nice, classy packaging

Cons of Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter Hu$tla Baby:

• Fine micro glitter particles
• Will accentuate the texture of the skin
• Do not expect a “glow-from-within” look from this one.

IMBB Rating: 4/5

Overall Thoughts:
The first question which comes to mind is why did the brand choose to include ‘Hu$tla Baby’ in this set. Why not the more hyped ‘Trophy Wife’? This is obviously just my viewpoint – I feel that the brand opted for a more universally appealing shade. And it may also have something to do with the fact that the shade it originally comes within the duo – Mean Money – has dismal reviews. So, by launching this shade separately, in this set, they are still able to provide customers with the option of buying Hu$tla Baby without being deterred or stranded (as the case may be) with the other dud shade.

While there is obviously a lot of hype around the brand and it’s supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread this highlighter may not be for everyone. Yes, there will be a lot of takers for this because of late everyone seems to love the more obvious “in-your-face” highlighters and this one fits the bill. However, if you have textured or more mature skin this would end up “highlighting” the skin concerns. Also, I feel that there are better highlighters in the market – at pretty much every price point today – so this isn’t the unique option – nor does it fit the bill for a “need to have” highlighter.

Quick cost analysis of the kit. Based on cost per gram/ml of their original products, the gloss costs about USD 11, while the highlighter would cost about USD 9.35. Rounding it up – the value of the set is USD 20.5. The kit costs USD 23. So, it isn’t really a value set. Having said that, it probably still makes sense for someone who wants to try the Fenty line – coz you do get 2 products for just about the cost of a single one.
