Let’s Remember ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’

Hi ladies,

You know its 6 AM and I am writing a post, because I couldn’t sleep and I love IMBB. 🙂 And I also love DDLJ!

Don’t you? I think we all do. This is one movie that I have literally watched more than 50 times, the other one being Hum Apke Hai Kaun. As DDLJ completes its humongous 1000-week run at Mumbai’s Maratha theatre, let’s rewind and go back to those innocent times in the 90s and relive the memories together.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is easily for me, one of the mushiest and THE most romantic movie of all times. I love the pairing of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in this movie. It is the longest running movie in the history of Indian Cinema.

This movie told a simple love story of a couple Raj and Simran, with all the twists and turns, in all the right places. The dialogues in this movie has reached a cult status of its own and almost every one of us must have used a dialogue or two from this film, at some point of our life.

Few Iconic Dialogues From The Movie:

  • Raj agar yeh tujhe pyaar karti hai, to yeh palat ke dekhegi. Palat… Palat…
  • Main ek Hindustani hoon … aur main jaanta hoon ki ek Hindustani ladki ki izzat kya hoti hai

Trivia about DDLJ:

  • This cult movie was released on the Silver Jubilee event of Yash Raj Films.
  • Saif Ali Khan was approached for the lead role, but he turned down the offer and eventually Shah Rukh Khan became the much loved Raj. Shah Rukh Khan wasn’t really keen on playing a lover boy for the fear of being typecast, but Aditya convinced him to play this iconic role. The makers had also considered Tom Cruise for the lead role, as Raj’s character in the movie was that of an NRI guy.
  • Do you know who suggested the famous and catchy title of the movie? It was Kiran Kher, wife of Anupam Kher. A film with the same name was released way back in 1980s.
  • With this movie, we saw the debut of a few faces, who went on to become successful in their own way. Aditya Chopra made his directorial debut with DDLJ, while the much loved director and producer Karan Johar was seen as Shah Rukh Khan’s friend and former model Parmeet Sethi made his debut as Kuljeet Singh, Simran’s fiancé. This was also the first film of Mandira Bedi, who is now a known face in the TV and Cricket world.
  • In the last scene of the song ‘Ruk Ja O Dil Diwaane’, Shah Rukh Khan drops Kajol. Kajol was not told about this drop earlier, to get the natural surprised reaction from her. And when Shah Rukh Khan dropped her during the shoot, she actually was hurt and angry and didn’t talk to the crew members that entire day!

  • Aditya Chopra named Shah Rukh Khan’s character Raj after the famous actor Raj Kapoor.
  • ‘Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna’ the quintessential song of Indian weddings was actually made for some other movie. But as fate would have it, the song went on to be one of the biggest hits of DDLJ.

  • The leather jacket that SRK wears in the movie was actually bought by Uday Chopra from a Harley-Davidson store in California, for an amount of $ 400.
  • Himani Shivpuri, who played Simran’s aunt was supposed to be in the climax of the movie, but her husband died during the shoot.
  • For all scenes in which Shah Rukh Khan was driving in Europe, Aditya Chopra would lie down on the back seat of the car, to give him instructions, and Shah Rukh Khan would drive the car really fast ,just to make it hard for Aditya during the shoot.
  • In the scene where Shah Rukh would open his shirt to show a lipstick-marked chest, the lipstick marks were actually made by Kajol herself.

The movie is again very much in the news for its 1000th week and the internet is abuzz with jokes surrounding this movie.

In 2010, Yash Raj Films signed an agreement with Indian and Swiss tour companies to provide a tour package called ‘YRF Enchanted Journey’. The package allows people visiting Switzerland to view sites and filming locations from all the famous Yash Raj films, including DDLJ.

On 12th of Dec, when the movie reached its 1000th week, every channel was playing this movie and I watched it once again for that innocent romance between the lead pair, the iconic songs, those dialogues , all that drama and tragedy and that happy ending. 🙂

  3. Sigh! One of my most loved and most watched films. This is probably the only movie which I have never been tired of watching. Every time I hit replay, it is like the first time. And to think I was just a 6 year old when it was released. 😀 😀 Watching it is like, falling in love, all over again. I think one of the best parts about the movie, was that Kajol, which her girl-next-door looks, and figure, looked natural, unlike most of the female actors today, who look plastic. And of course, we all got our very own “Raj”. And I still secretly think of a DDLJ with Tom Cruise (Though I love Shah Rukh Khan 😛 ). It would have been an iconic romance, even then. Loooooove the article. Feels so nostalgic. 😀 😀
