MAC Candy Yum Yum Lip Pencil Review and FOTD

Hello ladies,

Today’s review is on a lip pencil from MAC. Like Heroine lip pencil, this too has a sibling in the form of a lipstick by the same name – Candy Yum Yum. The lipstick has been reviewed ages ago. It was a limited edition product then, but has since become a part of the permanent range. I have shared swatches of both – the lip pencil and the lipstick in this post 🙂

MAC Candy Yum Yum Lip Pencil

Product Details:
A pencil designed for shaping, lining or filling in the lip. Lip pencils have a smooth, creamy texture that is perfect for lining the lips or filling them in. They are long-lasting and available in a wide selection of colors that work well with many different lipstick shades. The color of the lip pencils is protected by vitamin E, which acts as an antioxidant, and they contain emollients that moisturize the lips.  Lip pencils can be worn alone, with lipstick or lip glass.

Price:
$16.50 in US / INR 1650 for 1.45 gm.

Packaging:  The lip pencil is a regular sharpen-able wooden pencil which comes packaged in a black cardboard box. The good thing with the packaging is that the cap is snugly secure and doesn’t come off easily. Also, the pencil bottom is colour coded corresponding to the product shade, so it’s easy to identify in the stash. As is usual with pretty much all MAC pencils – it does not come with a sharpener.

My Experience with MAC Candy Yum Yum Lip Pencil:

Color: The shade is described by MAC as a “neon pink,” and it’s exactly that – bright neon pink. It’s really cool toned, not something which would appeal to everyone. I have seen pics of WOC (women of color) absolutely rocking this shade, but I know of equal number of medium skin toned females who shy away from this colour.

Texture: The texture for this one seemed a tad bit drier than that of Heroine. The product doesn’t drag as much as a retro matte lipstick, but cannot be termed as creamy. You need “prepped-up” lips for this one, else it will catch onto all the dry patches. Also, the dryness of the texture makes it sink into the lines and accentuate them. It starts getting uncomfortable around 4-5 hours of wear.

Pigmentation: The pigmentation is decent but not something which would hide pigmentation. If you see my arm swatches, you will feel the pigmentation is good. However, if you notice my lip swatches, you will be able to see that the lip pigmentation seeps through. The colour is definitely muted compared to the lipstick by the same name.

The pictures I have shared are of lip swatches and FOTD with just the liner and again, with the lipstick topped onto the liner.

Staying Power:  This product lasted about 7-7.5 hours plus on me post which it started fading.  As was expected, by the end, there are dry patches and clinging. It leaves a stain, which had to be taken off completely with a makeup remover.

If topped with a lipstick, it pretty much stays put the entire day unless you have an oily meal.

To sum this up for you:

Pros of MAC Candy Yum Yum Lip Pencil:

  • A beautiful bold color.
  • Lightweight matte texture.
  • Precision application.
  • The pencil applies without too much tug or pull.
  • No feathering or bleeding.
  • Convenient packaging, easy to apply and easy to carry, doesn’t take much space in the bag.

Cons of MAC Candy Yum Yum Lip Pencil:

  • Not a hydrating formula; however, considering they are supposed to provide an iron-clad base for lipstick – one kind of expects them to be drying.
  • Does settle into the fine lines of the lips.
  • Tends to cling to dry patches, would suggest exfoliating lips before applying.
  • Pigmentation could have been better, it should ideally cover all lip pigmentation.
  • Product wastage during sharpening.

IMBB Rating:
3.5/5

Do I Recommend MAC Candy Yum Yum Lip Pencil?
This one’s a little tricky. Let me put it this way, if you use your lip pencils as lipsticks – covering the whole lip, I would say, skip it because the lip pigmentation shows through and it’s not very flattering. From a distance, it looks okay, but up close, it’s not flattering.  However, if you use a lot of hot pink lipstick colors, like Urban Decay Anarchy, Estee Lauder Neon Azalea, NARS Schiap, etc., then definitely pick this up because it will provide a good base and longevity to the lipsticks.

And if the choice is between the pencil and the lipstick, I would say, go with the lipstick. I have shared with you lip swatches, arm swatches and FOTD of the lip pencil and the lipstick over the lip pencil.

  1. the shade is so bright and bold, makes it difficult for everyone to carry. It looks drying 🙁 , but you somehow make it work along with the lipstick KK 🙂

    1. Yes, this one’s pretty bright! Its definitely drying, I think a lipstick on top makes it wearable. Its excellent as base but on its own…not so much!

  2. You carry off the shade very well! It looks extremely flattering on you. But this is a shade that is probably too cool toned for me.. I’m going to check out Nightingale whenever I get to go to a MAC store! Thank you for the swatches.. xo!

    1. Thanks Abinaya! I totally understand that the shade is too cool toned. I still remember that a MAC SA had pushed Peony petal (blush) to me and i was like – how can i ever wear something so cool toned. But since last 3 months Ive been trying to get my hands on the coolest pink blush – so that it pairs well with my purple lippies!! I’ll review Nightingale (sorry, it’s mis-spelt in the swatch) soon and the reason i bought it!

  3. i was wondering why this is not at par with the other mac lip liners, which are absolutely fantastic to say the least. loved the color on you k. you are pulling it off amazingly. I’d totally wear the shade. wish the formula was better. good review. 🙂

    1. Today, lip liners are coding more than lipsticks coz they have their own identity. They aren’t just a base product for lipsticks. Considering that, the lip liner should work as a stand alone product – which this one does not. It still provides a great base for lipsticks though.

  4. KK seems like uve curated only the best out of best..!! Candy yum yum is iconic and for a reason.. it looks amazing on u !!!

  5. Ohhh KK d color looks beautiful on u… I tried d lipstick d other day,.. It jus dint look good on my nc 40 skin tone.. ?… Loooks mast on u… Hey i wanna pick up schiap… Is it too similar to mac GAT???

    1. Thanks Amrutaa! I do not have Schiaps. But the swatches i saw online seemed similar to MAC GAT. Though, Schiap seems a tad bit cooler and more neonish. If you have GAT, I don’t think, you need Schiap.

Alternatively, just check with RAti though Madam Gupshup -I think she has both the shades.
