1. Keira Knightley as Cecelia Tallis in Atonement
Voted ‘the greatest costume of all time’ this green satin dress is worn by Keira Knightley’s character Cecilia Tallis in the 2007 film Atonement. It’s designed by Jacqueline Durran, who also did costumes for Pride and Prejudice (2005). Durran created a gown of featherweight silk satin, custom-dyed emerald. Since the Ian McEwan novel on which the film is based treats the frock as a character unto itself, partly responsible for igniting the couple’s passion, Durran felt it was crucial that “instead of being constructed around Keira’s body, the dress skimmed her [frame] and added to a feeling of semi-nakedness.”

2. Marilyn Monroe as the Girl in The Seven Year Itch (1955)
Not found in the original movie but in a production picture was one of the iconic images of its time, Monroe standing on a subway grate as her dress is blown above her knees by a passing train. Marilyn is in a billowy, white crepe halter-top dress and sunburst-pleated skirt created by Academy Award-winning costume designer Bill Travilla. The scene, with Tom Ewell admiring his dream girl’s pleasure at a blast of air through the subway grate, was originally shot near Grand Central Terminal, then reshot on a soundstage.
You can see the scene here. The skirt never rose so high in the movie as in the iconic picture. 🙂
3. Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)
The classic ‘little black dress’ designed by Givenchy and worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Givenchy and Hepburn first met in 1953, when she was, as she described herself: …a skinny little nobody…. She had just completed her first big film Roman Holiday which was still unreleased, and was about to begin her next, highly significant, follow-up film Sabrina. The film, to be directed by the genius Billy Wilder, a romantic comedy about a chauffeur’s daughter who returns home from a trip to Paris so sophisticated and wordly, that she charms her father’s millionaire employee’s two eligible sons, proved to be the perfect vehicle for the Givenchy/Hepburn collaboration.

What the French designer Givenchy said about his first meeting with Audrey Hepburn:
“I was told that Miss Hepburn was coming to look for clothes for her new movie, Sabrina. Since I loved Katharine Hepburn’s style and look, I thought this was fantastic. But when the door of my studio opened, there stood a young woman, very slim, very tall, with doe eyes and short hair and wearing a pair of narrow pants, a little T shirt, slippers and a gondolier’s hat with red ribbon that read VENEZIA. The disappointed couturier later admitted: “My first impression was of some extremely delicate animal. She had such beautiful eyes, and she was thin… I told her, “Mademoiselle, I would love to help you, but I have very few sewers, I am in the middle of doing a collection, I can’t make you clothes.” So she said, “Show me what you have already made for the collection.” She tried on the dresses – “It’s exactly what I need!” – and they fit her too. She knew exactly what she wanted. She knew perfectly her visage and her body, their fine points and their faults. Later I tried to adapt my designs to her desires. Scarlett Mosambi is called “Sweet Lime” in English. That is what I know what people used to call in US! I donno about English and Hindi translations, but what jomol wrote about Grapefruit seems more accurate. Even I’ve learnt all my life people calling “Mosambi” as sweet lime.
